  1. Guys it pretty simple Il2 has been optimized for VR. Relatively speaking DCS is like a bag of spanners in the washing machine and it kind of works but its been surpassed heavily in the last few years as they have not invested in this sector early enough, or enough fullstop. Lets hope Vulcan comes sooner rather than later this year. You know there is an issue when people installing 3090's and only getting 5fps more lol. Game is heavily CPU bound - remember at the heart where still playing on an engine designed 15 years ago....
  2. so for me it does work, surprising well wasnt expecting much from this stand alone headset but with the link - wow alot of value for £300. Title of post is very misleading to be honest. Sorry not helpful but its something hardware or software at your end. I'm guessing its something to do with not having internet - the oculus software no doubt will want to check the connection also. Try running it normally aka with internet access on your pc.
  3. its an annoying and long running problem, its been noticeably worse in the last few months also. some type of bad memory leak somewhere. We should also have the option to turn off the hangar 3D background, its just not needed for tac command views etc. Please give us the option instead of having the GPU wearing away on a static pointless environment
  4. Its ok, its only 3 years old just be patient
  5. @Uboats please can you review the attached track file. To note the tank in the asset pack has exactly the same issue i reported on the HQ7 and BMP some time ago - apologies its just that we have started using it and note is has severe issues. Please can you confirm logged and pass on for an urgent fix. ZtZ Test - Same problem as other chinese asset pack issues .trk
  6. What's also a concern is that since the Harm was released on the Viper something has changed with its seeker behaviour. Nothing to do with jettisoning however when firing harms will hit sam sites that are on green in ME pretty much 100% of the time. It's an issue
  7. Simple question - why when you uninstall a module and erase it from the ED module manager screen does it not actually delete the large folders within mods/aircraft. I noted as i tried a free module over the Christmas period and note that despite removing it from the game, the files remain. Also i note i've had this before with other modules that i've taken off such as the channel map (poor performance still and because of this it's not been taken up by the MP community so pointless 18Gb having it on the PC). Can you ensure if you delete a module, it deletes, please. Just stands out as bad coding to be honest.
  8. +1 About time really!!!
  9. Hey thanks for the response but no not at all was being weird, was just highlighting to the other user who was critical saying i must never have used VR and have no experience, of which there is considerable irony in this statement. In no way am i elitist in my views and apologise as it was in no way meant to come across as "ive been simming longer etc" in any way shape or form - i'm merely asking that for those of that desire an increase in realism (or actually just back to the time before no dots) that this is not hard coded into the base game and its an option (for MP server side) for those that want the increase spotting. The frustration comes from knowing the reality. We should not be seeing ground and air units are far as we currently are, especially as a large black dot. I mean also on another point I took the spitfire module up last night just on a recce to see how the WW2 models had been affected and its terrible, i loaded up the big show campaign and i was seeing the dots out to excess of 25 miles of the german fighters coming in. People can discuss this all they want but seeing units as we currently can, in excess of 20 miles (i can only report my own experience VR wise) some saying nearly 40 is not reflective of the real world. I don't need graphs or anything to tell me that either but i guess for those doubting then grateful whoever it was that posted them as it gave some "scientific" reinforcement of what i've been saying. Appreciate your feedback and essentially what your saying i'm in agreement with in principle in that we have different users wanting different levels. However to make it easier for one element (and it has to be said thus far its mainly newer players in the majority) should not be forced on those that do not want to spot ground and air units at extreme distances. Neither is either better or worse this is a game at the end of the day but it's personal preferences and because its a simulator some of us do not want the instant spotting ability. If having it as an option then great if it helps people with their own enjoyment of the product and brings in more DCS players then that is fantastic. But let's not ruin the gameplay for those that prefer it a little bit more of a challenge. Purely asking the dev's to respect both sides and that this be in the options tab (MP server side setting) rather than it hard coded in for everyone. I ask this because in its current format it is a form of the label system.
  10. LOL i'd exercise more respect my dear friend, whilst some of us are just sim guys these days in civvy street doesn't mean that because were in our mid 40's now and past it lol we don't have real experience in this area to make comparisons. If if real life you can see camouflaged ground units and spot things out to 25+ miles, especially in hot middle eastern environments then well my friend you either ate more carrots as a child than i did or your superhuman. In game we've got some people reporting 40 miles but i can only go from what i have seen in VR on a hot rig with high settings.
  11. Yea sorry i had dialogue with an ED representative when the white dots in the daylight issue appeared in November and it was communicated to me that the dev team had indeed brought in intentionally a spotting mechanism but alas it wasn't as they had expected it to perform. But yes the current dot issue im hoping is another case of its not turned out how they expected as surely it can't remain like this. In the last hour just taken a warbird up and wow the black dots at distace are about 5 times the size of the aircraft if not more.
  12. @nighthawk2174 Thanks for visually showing and they largely reinforce my point - i think it was on here or the other thread that praises how good the new system is i was stating its a disaster and that also light levels are also critical for spotting and greatly affects it along with climatic conditions (not shown in the graph lol). I'm not asking that this dot thing be taken away as some people are saying they can't see anything and in real life "they must" be able to see x object as its within 12 miles or whatever. Happy if it makes them happy to believe this. Clearly this dot thing is needed for less experienced players so that they can survive longer, get better at tactics and SA training so its a good thing, should just be in options to enable that's all. But when we have dots on ground and air units and i can see them at 20 miles, its crazy and just utterly ruin's the immersion, gameplay and experience.
  13. Just to clarify my experience with consumer available simulators, i've been playing them on and off for 25 + years when able to do so. Yes i have had many gaps and the like over that timeframe but i have consistently been involved since 1997 and played when able to do so and back in the UK. I have been UK based for the last 5 years again and have played DCS consistently since then. I have been playing with VR for the last 5 years plus that includes beta testing on one of the original headsets. I have used and owned DK1, CV1, Rift S, Vive Pro, Reverb G2 and also Quest 2 now on order. I have also tried other VR and AR headsets in a professional capacity which exceed those listed. I think i qualify to have enough time in VR play. I'm a very active player online over the last 3 years including upto a few marathon 16 hours sessions non stop in VR! Yes I have experience RL and i will say the current view distances are ridiculous for stationary units with the mk1 eyeball. I respect the difficulty in what ED are trying to do but the dots on ground and air units is not right, its not the solution, its a quick effort to improve visibility for those that complain about it without actually appreciating for what it is. Yes the whole spectrum needs improvement but not this in its current form. A camouflaged unit on the ground can be difficult/impossible to spot from even a few miles with experienced operators who use terrain depressions/wadi's , background topography and nets appropriately. Especially with climatic conditions. Now that would be an excellent option for tac commanders to be able to have LUP points that units could do this, but a point for another thread. You say you can spot aircraft IRL "way high up", ok lets assume that these are commercial aircraft as you didn't specify and they are flying circa 35,000 feet. That is in old money what about 6.6 miles on a jet that has no attempts at camouflage (the opposite they want to be seen), the best possible aspect re shape to spot, your stood stationary with no movement with time to search and you knew where to look. I'd be amazed if you couldn't see it at that size, range and speed. If I said try and spot an F16 size aircraft, that was not contrailing at 35,000 feet on its own good luck out of a random sky. Even if you know where roughly the sky is like a sea it swallows you up and it take's time for your eyes to focus on an unknown point its a chance shot. Change the aspect to head on, your moving also, climatic conditions on an aircraft a fraction of the size good luck sir if you think you can spot things out as far as we have in game at present, VR or not. Change it to mountainous terrain and below then again good luck. Sometimes the best hope is not spotting the aircraft itself but the exhaust vapour depending on type as gives a visable signature which is larger dependant on the aspect. Add in that say they are just cruising speed, that's 8-9 miles per minute across the sky, if they are shifting then it may exceed 20 mile's per minute if high. The only thing you are guaranteed to know is that they are there somewhere by the sound (which again can be extremely disorientating depending on the terrain around you and reflected acoustics) I note you didn't actually answer the questions i raised really on where you think the view range should be out at to contribute to where you think we need to be. Nothing i said is ignorant. It's just stating facts on how things are, not trying to get an angle as you will note i have respect for the desires from both sides in the statements i have made. But an easy "gamer" mode (don't delude yourself as that's what it is) as other's will point out is not something that should be enforced for those that have no desire for it.
  14. @Fri13PS and thanks for finding a graph that i was trying to explain verbally with this post. One thing i do agree on is the circa 7 mile range as i stated in my original post here and elsewhere. Its not hard and fast rule either with climatic conditions, time of day (light level) and the AO terrain below having a huge impact on this in real life.
  15. Exactly this an option is need for those that want the easy mode so it doesn't ruin the gameplay for those that play the game a bit more seriously. Settings needs to be server side as briefed for MP. What we cannot have is the current status quo. Its appalling. As for the monitor, i only fly VR also. All because a monitor may see further doesn't make that right either - that is my entire point. The current system in VR specially as you mention it is incorrect you can acquire units way to far out and too easily. Note new VR systems coming out are far more capable however the Dot's are on all systems monitor or VR. There should be none unless you want them and then server owners should be able to hard lock this option either way like we can with labels currently.
  16. @Fri13 Could not agree more its equally disappointing on the ground perspective and WW2 now is super painful Beyond me why ED have gone down this road when its going to alienate the sector that this product is aimed at. Fine can understand trying to make it easier for people with little experience, new to DCS who are primarily after a gaming like experience but this should be an option in settings (set server side for MP) not hard coded in for those of us that prefer realism. I note most of the comments are people who have not commented much on the forums (like a few posts) which i know is not always an indication (i only joined the forums 2 years ago but was very experienced at that point with the product and it was due to having more time and wanting to start posting issues with MP and to get other users feedback). There is an alternative thread to this with people thanking ED for this spotting increase - painful and again note its what appears to be newer players.
  17. Ok so a couple of questions for you? How long have you played DCS and what's your history with simulators ? Say you could put yourself in the same situation in real life. What's your expectations of seeing a fighter sized aircraft say nose on visually with your mk1 eyeball, say if the threat is below you over terrain? Co Alt? What's your expectations in real life of seeing an IFV at say 20,000 feet what range would you expect to see this from. Lets say mountainous arid/desert terrain and vehicle would have appropriate camouflage scheme for its AO? My opinion may become unpopular if we have more gamers that start playing DCS then people looking to play a simulator. The two are different beasts and i respect both sides, just saying they have different desires for their experience. What i'm sayin is we cannot alter the core ethics of the game, that people have invested alot of time and money into over the last 10+ years to then suddenly change the goalposts on spotting that ruin's realistic gameplay. Its as simple as that. Yes i respect some newer players will not what that level of difficulty but trust me when i say experienced players also do not want the all seeing CAS and CAP by dots from 20+ miles.
  18. @Pilot IkeI guess it depends on hardware and software configs also but i was spotting fighter sized aircraft depending on aspect out to 5 6 miles in VR perhaps further. I run a pretty high setup for VR resolution wise etc. I also have alot of hours airborne RL so appreciate the differences and difficulty of what they are trying to do. For me spotting ground unit's that come as black dots like what they have brought in December is just super gamey. There has to be a better solution. CAS is now hunt by dots again at range and shows up particularly bad on desert maps. Long live the day when we start getting to the fidelity of nets and the like i say. But what they have done is killed gameplay for some of us, especially those that prefer the CAS mission. I noticed WW2 spotting is also badly affected with the black dots bigger than the aircraft at range. No more sneak attacks, its a problem!
  19. Ok so after 2.5.6 came out I reported about the white dots at night being an issue for ground vehicles. This got "fixed" in November but that fix meant that all units had white dots on them in the daytime. This then got fixed in December's patch, we now have black dots on aircraft and ground units that can be seen from 20+ miles away. Why? The problem is by introducing these cheat mechanisms, which is what they are, ruins the gameplay for your core customers that pretty much have every module and have been with the development journey since lock on days all those years ago. There is already a dot option for labels for those that prefer a less realistic environment and need assistance. Please can we remove all black dots from the game, go back to what we had so as not to "help" gamers who are struggling to spot units that have perhaps one or two modules and a few months or more in the game. It is VERY hard in real life to see units, especially once past 7 miles or so. Your "dream is to offer the most authentic and realistic simulation of military aircraft, tanks, ground vehicles and ships possible" please do not then ruin the gameplay it by spotting dots. Which is what we now have, its CAP and CAS by dots again from outlandish ranges. Would hope that this new easier to spot dot mechanism be switched to the options tab rather than hard baked in like it currently is. This then means that for those players and servers that wish to have an easy mode it can be enable it whilst not ruining gameplay for others who play DCS a little more seriously. Many thanks @bignewy please help and feedback.
  20. It is a game, but its sub branch is a simulator. The ethos is not to make a game but trying to simulate systems and the combat interface where possible by digital means. To make it easier (and unrealistic) to spot targets for new players and "gamers" is not want this process is about, that is unless ED want to sell themselves out for the $, which listening to Nick i highly doubt. Whilst cash is important for any business, there are things that ED could have done to make this more appealing to the mass market but thus far they have refrained. What we cannot do however is to affect the only simulator in this space that has modern graphics and VR (ive played Falcon/BMS for 22 years on and off) ruined by unrealistic dots to "help" new gamers coming in that have a few hours in the game or even a few months. You cannot have realism if you start introducing mechanisms that make it unrealistic on target spotting, white and black dots are certainly not realistic! It is pointless being in a level d sim to then have war thunder style gameplay, which is what your asking for with dots. The problem is people want things on a plate and its the gaming mentality that is at odds with what this product is trying to be, a simulation. No its not real life, far from it as the worst that happens if your pc might crash! What is like real life is that you have to study somewhat to learn the system's if you are not already familiar with them in this game. I come across online alot of the younger players on comms coming on just not putting the time in to study and constantly asking questions that if they actually read and learnt the manual they would know. It's a bad reflection on them. I rather suspect largely its these same players asking for dots on targets to help them, not correctly using rwr either. If you have already lost the SA picture in your head around you, you've pretty much already lost the fight anyway. But having something hard coded that affects all users, and the ones that actually like "realism" that have been with the product since lock on days is for us hugely frustrating and actually ruin's our gameplay. We are not at the start of the journey with only one or two modules bought but well over $1000 dollars invested (worth every penny unless we have it ruined by stupid dots).
  21. Excellent - thanks for the feedback about the Q2. Sounds promising and just looking for something that will get me away from the nightmare that is the G2, non existent customer service with HP and yet give me a boost towards the clarity i briefly saw on my G2 prior to it breaking after a few hours of use! As for the GPU spike - so i find if i actually open task manager, just another application so that DCS is not the priority window and you have forced the pc to open something else then close it and go back it clears quite often the jam. Its most annoying, i really perceive its related to the F10 map even if you have been in it prior to being in the cockpit. But whatever something somewhere is causing the memory GPU leak and its highly likely your system. I sometimes think somehow although not displaying it its still thinking about the internal hanger that we see in the background. God alone knows why the dev's have not given us an option to completely not have this scene. Most users do not even want this in the background - just a better sized map and black background with no model would be fine. One last check you don't have winwing software running do you?
  22. Apologies in advance for the longer post - but this is important as its about the Integrity of the product. Well you guys that want white dots or any dots for that matter to "help you spot" have totally missed the point of the game, it is meant to be a simulator. With respect and no offence meant you have come to play the wrong product, there are other less realistic sims for you without naming names or equally on servers within DCS that have labels or just enable them in SP. That functionality for a dot label is already in the game! Do not keep begging for things that ruin, and i mean literally ruin gameplay for those that play this product a little more seriously. Many like myself desire a more realistic experience and i can assure you that spotting things in real life is not easy. You are not visually going to be easily spotting attack aircraft and choppers from circa 7+ miles especially if they are below you, are camouflaged and your also being bounced around especially in choppers over mountainous terrain and their thermal systems it's just not that easy. Add to this heat and climatic conditions especially in hot theatres its extremely, extremely hard. You'll often hear a chopper before you see it, its that simple and in valleys that's also deceptive as it bounces off the peaks above you so its not as easy to locate direction. Its like if you lose someone in the water, what's the golden rule you don't take your eyes of that person. Same thing applies here if its a threat. Spotting past 7 mile is really hard for small targets and if you turn your head away and look back 50%+ of times you will lose the object and precious time to reacquire. If they change azimuth, speed and direction then that probability start's dropping like a stone. For those that want to see ground forces from 15/20 miles away its time for a reality check. Good luck if your against experienced operators finding a FSG vehicle even from a few miles away if its in a slight depression or wadi, with appropriate nets and placement re shape and backdrop. Again especially in hot theatres with the Mk 1 eyeball your just not going to pick up on it, unless they make an error and show signs of movement etc which is what your brain will react to. Only time when you might get a white light, its generally a flash of a reflection. So from a ground perspective this may be a glass in a vehicle (IF its not been taken out) or some idiot using bino's or optics without ARD's. But, again you'd have to time it right to be looking and also they would have to be stupid and on a deathwish. With trained professional's its just not going to happen, they also want to go home at some point in the future and not in a box. All you guys wanting a dot, so that you can put your dot on it so to speak and blow it up are just not living in the real world. You need to ask yourself do you just want to play a game or do you want to play something that you have to look and search for, not be put on a plate for you. Having these dots - which i note have from the ridiculous white dot are now black dots is not right. It ruins gameplay, it is just not realistic in anyway shape or form. I have not had chance to play much since the update however note that the black dots now appear on all units and was seeing them from 15+ miles away in VR. I need to test this weekend but i think it's actually probably further. It is not good especially for virtual chopper guys or tac commander's that have ground forces. It's also frustrating flying CAS because its Insta kill time. I mean yes alot of DCS is like a game, i mean take JTAC smoke on all multiplayers, just roll in and drop on the laser. No specific attack corridors required (which in the real world have a very restrictive optimum attack heading either side of the JTAC heading towards the target with a central no attack zone around the JTAC and pretty much anything opposite) so you don't lock and kill the people that either need help or there to support the mission. But we accept that for what it is and can get around this in game if we so wish. Hard coding dots for objects is game breaking, its that simple. Please for those of you wanting these back on or to continue, either enable the existing setting so you have dot labels (as do not kid yourself your wanting the same thing) but do not ruin this game for those of us that play the game with a bit more realism. I would, as with many others that have already spent over $1000 on software over the years for this game to have it ruined by inexperienced players. Also last point - it takes years to learn to spot units in real life and what to look for, you have to train how you look, how you sweep your eyes, the focus point and the speed of that, the pattern that you use, was that shape their yesterday etc. Do not make it easier than it already is. Yes it's a game but some degree of making it more of a challenge should be welcomed not seeking way to meta the product to make it easier for you. As I said not meant to cause offense, but is meant as a reality check. PS - Also I only play VR so those of you with monitors that already zoom to the max when airborne in a loaded G turn ask yourself could you do that in real life? We do not need dots.
  23. Ok thanks for the pm, just opened so just literally a 2 minute reply until get free later. When your game grinds to a halt have you tired lifting the visor and just open task manager, anything to make DCS not the active window? Once you put the headset on again does this solve your issues. It works for me now 80% to 90% of the time. I'm still tracking through the problem but note there is some type of F10 map memory leak that can on occasion halve the fps. Especially true if used tac command. Quite often opening another process and returning back into the game acter your GPU using drops right down with the headset off clears it and you return back to 40 or 45 fps depending on headset. I've become a master of MP inflight wing levels level headset off and back on again whilst I open another app lol. Note I have using VR for 5 years DK1, CV1, Rift S, Vive and G2. Note I'm back on the Rift S as the G2 has failed after less than a week of use and locked like many others on 4-1. What is the Q2 lkke visually inside does anyone know compared to Rift S with say bit rate at 300 to 500 and Pd say 1.2 to 1.4 if needed. I'm preparing to sell my sole to facebook given the G2 issues I've had its about to be sent back.
  24. I would say at this stage 99.9% no which is a shame. What we could so do with however is just one airfield at Doha on the map, especially for bomber and support aircraft as that opens the map up hugely. Its also the main base in the region and should really be there. It opens up different flight corridors into Iran. Even if it had no detail just runways, aka Janes F15 style and parking slots that would be enough. It would be a massive present for mission planners and users for such a little investment time. I cannot emphasize this enough.
