Friday April 18, 2014 Development Update – Landing the 109

Hey everyone,

Here’s some more on the Bf 109K-4.

We’re pretty much done with the cockpit and external animations. The last remaining set of cockpit tasks should take no more than 2-3 days; plus we’ve compiled a final list of fixes and updates needed to the cockpit and external models based on internal testing, which should take no more than 10 days or so for the modeler to implement.

We’re having an internal discussion on what exactly to consider an alpha stage for the 109. Obviously we owe our backers an alpha version. My own feeling is that we’re pretty much at alpha, while some at ED feel that this is very far from a version that can be given out. Next week, our plane will look like a 109, sound like a 109, and all the gauges and internal systems will operate as those of a 109. However it will not fly exactly like a 109. The engine model and the aerodynamic model is what takes the most time to perfect in DCS.

We’ll have another big internal discussion on this on Monday.

For now, here’s some screenshots of some more cockpit animations, working AFN2, and a near-perfect three-point landing.

(please note that the new render is still in development, so you're seeing some glitches in trees and shadows and other components)

Looks great, thanks Luthier.

Personally I agree with ED, delay the alpha and work on the 109 some more, you never know what bugs might occur while finalizing the 109's FM.

In the mean time I imagine the 190 is now being assembled in our hanger :)

Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone with these updates and show the 109 in the Normandy terrain? Or is the map being left until last? Personal i have no interest in the German aircraft, I would have preferred an extra British aircraft than the 262 but thats how the voting went I can't complain but show those of us who arent really interested in the German aircraft the Normandy terrain in the background at least

Yeah! Gimme gimme gimme! :D

Seriously though, this seems to be in early integration now so maybe best wait a bit as mentioned.. Will not make waiting any easier for us though knowing that it's in practically flyable state.. :D

dont know whether i agree with that :)

of course some people will probably moan and bug reports will arise about how it doesnt fly properly,....but there will always be complaints regardless what.

so why not release it for the alpha-testers...maybe there are some bugs, where the devs are not aware of yet, and alpha testers could help to find them earlier?and besides, another flyable for wwii cant hurt...

why not?the p51 is flying for a couple of years now over the current map, and its still plenty of fun...with a flyable oponent, this would be even better...and its alpha, so its not available to the general puplic, and you dont have to fly it until there is a normandy map anyway if you have selected alpha access...

In my opinion the new map (or at least a part of it) and one axis and one allied plane should be in the alpha. DCS:1944 is not a single module after all.

true, dcs wwii will not be a single module, but the 109 is the start of it...luthier mentioned beforehand, that they will release the alpha within steps, meaning module after module beeing added...he also stated the development of the map is on hold right now...so why waiting for a map while the plane is flyable?

I agree that the DCS World map would be fine as a placeholder until the Normandy map is available but I would rather they didn't release the 109 unless ED is happy to do so.

yeah Krupi, we all want dcs level of fidelity, but its alpha, so waiting until ED is happy would propably mean that there is no alpha access at all :)

good point
