That video above not only has some serious mistakes in basic physics (using rotating frame of reference? Centrifugal force makes no sense otherwise). It also says some things rather poorly.

Brake while turning? OK, if you are trail braking on the track. Otherwise, heck no.

If you want great motorcycling advice for safety, get Twist of the Wrist II. Book and/or DVD. Shows you everything you need to know.

As for countersteering, all two wheel motorcycles work by countersteering. It's the same way a bicycle works. Nothing special or mysterious about it.

The key difference between cornering and swerving is in where you put your weight (body position). In a swerve, you counterweight, like you do with a dirt bike. In cornering, you put your weight on the inside of the turn so as to reduce required lean angle. Two different techniques for two different purposes, both of which still are examples of countersteering.

Have you read this thread and watched the videos I have attached?

I think you a haven’t and then misunderstood whats being said here.

The video above is good for a 6min video and suits the intent and purpose of the creators view to illustrate what is counter-steering.

The brief discussion and illustration on the elements of physics are just keyed points to drive the message he demonstrates right at the start of the video as proof to his analogy.

Why I chose this video just so you can see how it all fits, towards the end @4.44 the conclusion he again demonstrates his views and case for the created video.

He shows and makes the case for setting things up properly in a practical approach with the correct knowledge proving that incorrect or lack of skill and awareness will lead to error.

In this case adding to much speed and not allowing momentum to drive the bike under centrifugal forces.

In MotoGP racing you enter the curve having already applied heavy braking before coming to and through the apex and as you pass it, only then you apply acceleration.

The tighter you are in the corner at slower speed the faster you are in the corner and coming out.

Watch online Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi do this frequently as they counter each other’s overtake pass.

Speed works against you in this instance you as you will go wide and lose your place in the race.

Now if this is done on busy mountainous road conditions you would have hit an oncoming car or over the cliff being the worst case scenario, possible death.

As another example watch this video…………

You do know who the speaker is right, a 5 times world champ, giving tips for free to save rider lives.

Hint:- http://www.motogp.com/en/riders/Mick+Doohan ...... and...... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Doohan

Also watch the movie "THE FASTEST" -

As for your advice on "Keith Code" and much appreciated it is, look at page 5 post 50 never mind here it is............. https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3131257&postcount=50

What I have illustrated is very much the practice of many elements of counter-steering in one effort, but not forgetting that those 3 different elements are skills individually learn't (lessons) and should have been tested before acquiring your license to meet the necessary safety conditions you will be challenged with in reality.

You may rebut this if you like but I'm an instructor M8 I have had to learn all this myself and perfect it as best as I could to teach others what I have learn't and was passed down.

Sure, I am rusty now and need a refresher because I last road a bike in 2005 ish.

My heart goes to riders and to save souls and just a nice chat in Forum its not ego just enjoying the chat.

Cheers.......

Early next september, I'll be hitting 20 years of exclusive motorcycle riding

A recurring theme over those 2 decades:

First bike, GSX-R 750 SRAD 1998

bought 2nd hand, owned almost 2 years / roughly 22000km

19646-jpg.568208

2nd bike, GSX-R 750 K6 2006

Bought new, rode for over 12 years, 95000km when she died (she was old and worn)

19678-jpg.568253

3rd, GSX-R 1000 K5 2005

Barn find, bought in 2019 with 7500km on the clock, true treasure (still had the original front tire)

When later Corona closed everything except the gas stations, I added 35000km to her tally in a total of 18 months on her, alas, the one that got away, she was stolen 🤬

20190614_191117-jpg.569512

Current, again 1000 K5 (because it's a friggin K5!)

Bought at 30000km, day before Christmas 2021, currently at 56000km

Not it's current form, though mostly (mirrors and exhaust changed after crash early 2023)

Got Marchesini wheels, Wilbers modified suspension, Powercommander, braided brakelines, etc.

Some beautification like seat cover, double headlight, custom tankpad, exhaust hanger, etc.

(Basically all bikes had some level of modification, though this one has the most diverse -what I had planned for the bumblebee

the K6 had the most times, like 4 mufflers, 2 windscreens, 5 sets crashpads, etc.)

Hope to reach those 95000km again and beyond

Big regret not having ridden a K5 or any of the 1000cc sportsbikes from the 2000's. Before all the rider aids. The mid 2000's was peak GSXR years 600, 750, 1000.

2nd bike:

I swapped it to Corse colors after I decided to drop it:

(The 848 gave me a massive amount of electrical issues.. Replaced about everything on the electric system, including the alternator, all cables and about 4 voltage regulators.. never managed to solve it and traded in for my current bike)

Hi,

Wonder how I never saw this thread on this Forum ... I used to love bikes, but after I damaged my right knee with my last bike I decided no not risk it anymore, sold it and have never ride again ,,, but the pics here did give me a lot of nostalgia 😞

My first bike was a Chilean one, a Motochi 50cc of 1970-73. I don't have a photo of mine, but the model was like this:

motochi+50+1.jpg

On 1975 we replaced it with a Suzuki TS-50 that I shared with my brothers .. again, I don't have a pic of mine, but it was like this one but in blue:

On 1982, shortly after I got my first job, I purchased a 1977 used Suzuki GT-750 ... great bike, with quick acceleration in spite of its weight, this time I do have a pic of my own:

gEqgDjc.jpg

then I married and sold the bike to buy a car for my own new family ... so 10 years passed by, when on 1992 I purchased a 1985 Honda VF-750, this one, with my eldest daughter:

6uUdSiZ.jpg

My last bike was again bought 10 years later, this time back to Suzuki, with a GSX-1100F, this one:

I still miss her, great bike for me and one of the quickest on my small city at the time 🙂

Thanks @sirrah for the memories 👍

Didn't even knew this thread exhisted.
It seems there are others afflicted with the moto-nerd virus here!! 😄

My companions in "the path":

Honda CRM 50  1993
Lots of memorable rides and adventures in this gutless POS (but a great school for anyone starting to ride).

image.jpeg

Suzuki GSXR 600 SRAD  1997
A friggin banshee, screaming out of the corners. A product aimed for the early twenties fellas, I too took the bait (was 23 then).
Definitely not the most pleasant ride in slow traffic (needs moooaar revsss maaan). Nice toy that ended not seeing a race-track like I once planned.

image.jpeg

Ducati Monster 900 "Dark"  1999
Huge booming soundtrack, torquey "rounded" engine, huge fun.
It didn't last more than two months, destroyed in a collision with a wreckless driver doing a U-turn in the worst moment possible.
Such a lovely bike. And such a shame.

image.jpeg

Yamaha TRX 850  1998
This was kind of an oddball motorcycle, rare too, that I imediately wanted to have as soon as I could.
Japanese sportbike with Ducati styling and a trellis frame?  A parallel twin engine with 270º crank? (so, works and sounds like a V-Twin)
Interesting bike that, unfortunately, too many times felt like a mongrel of parts (and technically it is).

image.jpeg

Ducati 750 SuperSport  1993
Old, traditional, agricultural, so many of the "ugly headlight looks like a brick" comments (yeah, yeah.. whatever).
Huge character, rounded engine with nice soundtrack, and probably the sweetest ride in the whole list. Sometimes less is more, and simple is everything.
If you ever owned one, you're probably nodding and smiling (yep, you get it).

image.jpeg

Triumph Daytona 955i (T595i)  1999
Great triple cylinder engine like no other, but an odd chassis geometry that I ended not getting along with.
Always felt curious about it, got it in a deal that seemed too good to pass. A rare and great machine that simply took too long for me to gel with.

image.jpeg

Ducati 748E  2000
A dream come true, and the best motorcycle I've ever had, by far (and away) - and there's a very trick 916 engine under those fairings (the original 748 went kaput).
Warming it up was like a ritual, and the most beautiful ride, fully in control. Feeling every little thing, and that deep sound and engine vibes, it's very visceral.
Whatever good things you read about these, I assure you they're all that, and more. It's "the whole package", everything in the right dose.
Shame about the maintenance (done frequently, sometimes laborious) that gets expensive, but I'd imediately own another if I could (yes I dislike modern literbikes).
One of the very few pics I have of it (oddly, only a handful through those years), with my ugly head contemplating this marvel of design and engineering.

asdhdhghdhjj.jpg

Suzuki GSXR 1100 WP  1993
Nostalgia hit me really bad, in a time when I could no longer afford maintaining the yellow Duc, I decided to trade it for something else (my biggest regret, ever).
Went for this piece of youth icon (of mine at least). And I confirm that it's as mad as everybody's stories that you may have heard of these.
Imaculate for its age (they don't build them like this anymore). With modern tyres and a well setup suspension, despite the age and old tech, it is still a really good motorcycle.
But..... just not for me.

IMG_4076.jpg

Aprilia RSV 1000 Tuono Fighter  2004
Went looking again for a sporty V-Twin, specifically the Aprilia RSV Mille (Gen 1, early 2000s). The problem is my age, the body aches, no disposition for a race-rep machine.
The RSV Tuono is the same bike as the RSV Mille, minus the fairings, with a handlebar instead of clip-ons. It was an easy decision after a run around the block.
I adore this motorcycle, the ride and feel, the strong engine, chassis and build quality, the sound, the details and the look (even though I wouldn't call it "pretty").
Currently at 77000 KMs, still going strong as ever. The guy who said "italian motorcycles can't do the miles" does not have any clue.

tuono 4.jpg

The year for each mentioned one is of the model, not necessarily the year of my acquisition. They're placed by chronological order, during 30-odd years of riding to current day.
Never had a "brand new zero milleage" motorcycle, and I don't think I will at this point. I value motorcycles very much for the emotions, the memories they create and, for that, they don't need to be brand spanking new, or the latest and greatest. 🙂 They just need "to be right".

A 916 would be my ultimate dream. I ceased riding though, because tracks became too expensive and streets are just too dangerous to my health and licence after that. My last „bike“ was a Vespa 300 GTS, but when I moved in with my GF, it didn’t fit in the garage anymore and I couldn‘t leave it outside in the rain - so I sold it.

Very good, he gets it too! 🙂

Baron is also another one of the recent afflicted (LOL) and his is the special "SPS" (1996-2000 homologation series, few units produced), the pinnacle of the Desmoquattro, and the most addictive of the 916 series.  If you're saving to get one (...and its respective maintenance...) then that SPS is the "unicorn" you should aim at. That's as good as it gets:

Just looking through this thread makes me itch for a bike but I’m behaving myself. (Oh yes I am). Some lovely ones here too.

Always liked bikes but growing up my Gran would always make us promise not to have one. An unfair thing to ask really and it didn’t stop us getting into them.

When I was about twelve the ol man had just been knocked off his brand new CBX500 on his way to work. Typical story, car driver pulled out in front of him from a side road and he had nowhere to go but over. He was ok (ish) but his bike was written off. He was gutted. He replaced it with what was to my kiddy eyes (wanting to be Ron Haslam or something) a boring looking road bike like this one

DSC01556.JPG

I learnt to ride on it. Pretty quickly I learnt to love it. At the time the ol girl had a little 80cc moped for nipping to the shops and around town and everywhere we went we all went on the bikes. We didn’t use a car at all for a few years so we rode come rain or shine, even in the snow, we rode or had to walk. We’d go to race meetings as spectators and the minute we were on private land the ol man would let me take off with his bike. I was always meant to be getting my own for tracking but we’d look at one, try it out but there’d always be something that stood in the way.

When I was about Sixteen my best mate was bought one of these

20200728_143624_1.jpg

We rode it everywhere. It was gutless but we had some great laughs with it. I still have a scar on my knee from a night with that bike. We were coming home late through country lanes in winter. It was bloody cold and we were in the middle of nowhere. I was riding with my mate whose bike it was riding pillion. I turned right into a lane and the next thing I knew we were sliding along on our side. I heard my mate ask if I was alright and I told him I was as we were still sliding, it was as if we had all night for a chat 😄.

I picked up his bike and checked it over, it was fine really, luckily so we were we. Until I felt my knee. I put my finger in the hole in my trousers and also into my knee a little bit. There was a hole in my knee I could put the tip of my finger in. It didn’t hurt a lot, scabbed up, war wound, job done. When we looked to see why we’d come off we found a massive sheet of black ice that we’d just hit, it was right on the junction. We couldn’t have seen it but should’ve thought about the temps outside. Taught me what black ice is, you don’t get any chances.

The ol man swapped his bike in for one of these

33f5ab5976a31c8fb83bec2cdb9d1afc.jpg

Still boring. I wanted him to get a VF750FII but he was having none of it. The 305 was quicker than the old one and I loved it too after a bit. After a year or two he sold it and bought another car and the biking in my life was gone for a while. I’d have a go of different mates bikes but still didn’t buy my own.

Years later a mate asked me if I fancied going halves on a bike for a laugh. He could get a project bike cheap, we’d fix it up and flog it on after a bit of fun so we did that. It was one of these

Kawasaki_Z200_0001_Kawasaki.jpg

I can’t tell you the the amount of hilarity that thing brought us, it was ridiculous. We’d take it out all over and get into all kinds of trouble, I don’t know how we never did any damage but we got away with it somehow and sold it on after a while.

A couple of years ago one of my mates brought his bike up and we went out for a bit. It’s one of these

2019-Honda-CBR600RR1.jpg

We’re all a lot older and supposedly wiser now so I thought we’d have a nice and sedate little run out. We did, the first time. He came up again and we went out for a longer run. He was behaving until we got on the carriageway and he opened it up properly. My toes poked through my boots trying to hold on to the pegs, I thought we were about to fly. I had to have a go 😄. It goes like <profanity> off a stick. He’s toying with getting something else and for a while I was gonna buy his bike, it’s gorgeous. Thinking about it sensibly though I really shouldn’t so that plan went way onto the back burner.

I’m sort of ok not having one, unless I stumble on threads like these. Then I start getting ideas about it for a while. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll sort another one out for myself. Nice reminiscing though.

Ride safe all. 🙂

Sorry Ali but I can’t let this one go. You’re not getting away with posting that without getting an honourable mention. Classic shot 😄 70s for ya 😉. And that plate looks bleedin lethal 😄

yeah, thank goodness they removed the need for front number plates in the UK round about then, my Honda CD175 had the same arrangement for it's front plate, they got removed shortly after the pic was taken.

I have another pic of the bike on the peri track of the local airport, have to dig it out. We were allowed to use the peri track for all sorts on Sundays back then, I also flew model aircraft there on a Sunday, Wednesdays were my day for Cessna 150/152 flights to Orkney for lunch fill the tanks up and fly back to Wick.
