I'm really interested in seeing the list of AI that LN had to create for the PTO! Hopefully they are able to get the problems with the Mig out of the way, and can get the Corsair, Iwo Jima, and the Viggen!:joystick::pilotfly:

Would be Amazing to fly a Ordinance Loaded F4U of the deck of a Escort Carrier on Bombing and Strafing runs to Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.

I really want to see Cobra's announcement more now as the F4U-1 could be multiple variants and I'd like to know if the Iwo map is a standalone or will be included with the Corsair release.

 

It will be interesting to see what there long term plans are for this bird and it may be much better suited for future DCS additions than the F4-U4. It was such a late war addition that its primary opponent was all but finished by the time it arrived on the scene. The F4U-1 was around for quite awhile with the Marines and I believe the British used them before the US Navy even bothered with it. I'm personally happy to see mid-war planes hit the fold instead of everything at their peak. Now only if the Buchon would get canceled for a mid war design ....

 

Oh ... someone please announce the P-38 and Hellcat so the US side is pretty much complete.

FW 190 has a radial engine.

 

As it's been stated, the Dora actually has an in-line engine. The radiator is, however, circular and is often confused as a radial. It's the same family of engine that was fitted to the Ju-88, the Jumo 213.

 

It was a measure to provide better high altitude performance of the 190.

Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!

If it has WW2 carrier operation, it's a must buy. If not then its just on a long list of WW2 planes to buy when DCS WW2 becomes more fleshed out.

Make it a -4 and you could fly it off that same escort carrier against targets in Korea as well!! :thumbup:

 

Getting back aboard would be the greatest challenge/thrill of the mission I think.

I'm very happy we are getting the Corsair, it is such an iconic aircraft. I don't understand all the fuss being made over the Iwo Jima map though. The Corsair was used in Europe as well and will be right at home in the upcoming Normandy map.

While the British are in my opinion deserve the most credit for getting the Corsair operating from carriers. Probably the most famous users were the United States Marine Corps. Hence the PTO, Iwo Jima gives us a nearly end of the war Corsair. Which is excellent from a performance stand point. We could have gotten a much earlier less capable version that wouldn't have carrier capable, not without some difficulties anyway, and it still mildly fits into the ETO scenarios.

Are we getting the F4U-4? I thought we were getting the F4U-1.

No no no... A late war F4U-1. Many of the early PTO Corsairs given to the USMC didn't have tailhooks or folding wings. Because the US Navy didn't deem the safe for carrier operations. Once the Royal Navy worked out a safer landing pattern. That allows the pilot a better view over that long nose. The US Navy brought the Corsair back to the carriers in the PTO.

With the F4U Corsair and the already available P51 Mustang we can also fight the (maybe not so) famous Football War! :D

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I should probably read up on the history of this bird a little bit.

Ya the early Corsair was such a handful for inexperience pilots she was given some pretty bad nicknames, like the ensign eliminator and the widow maker! It had very bad stall tendencies, at low speeds the right wing would drop with little to no warning. In attempting to to prevent losing the aircraft, if pilots put too much power in too fast she would flip over on her left wing. All too often fatal to an inexperience pilot. Couple with very bad visibility over the nose the Corsair wasn't for the faint of heart in the landing pattern. Much of the problems where worked out as operations and procedures matured. In the air though it was fast, tough, and packed a hell of a punch in the air to air role, as well as the air to ground role! I get tingly just thinking about flying her!

Any source that we are getting a late war F4U-1? The first F4U-1s were carrier capable even if the USN couldn't use or adapt it and those given to USMC were designated FG-1's.

Pretty sure the FG-1 was to do with who manufactured it (Goodyear in this case rather then Vought), not whether it was for the marines or not. Corsairs made by Brewster were designated F3A

Yes that is correct, but they were manufactured with land base operations in mind so the folding wings and tailhook were removed, now I'm sure the USMC didn't just receive these but also some USN hand me downs that still retained the folding wings and tailhook.

Either way I'm pretty hyped for a corsair whichever variant we get, its just the leak specified F4U-1 which could mean just that an F4U-1 or it could mean an F4U-1A/C/D etc.. just have to wait and see I guess.

It was very maneuverable as well, easily out turning and out rolling the P-51B in USN trials.

If we're getting the F4U-1 and not the F4U-4 would be hoping it'd be a later variant too. Would make more sense if they're looking at an Iwo Jima map but I guess we'll find out soon enough. First day buy for me either way.

I hope they clarify soon which corsair they mean. The F4U-1D / -1C would be an OK (but not great) match against the current competition of the 190D-9, BF-109K-4, and P-51D.

 

The F4U-4 would be a perfect match.

 

The F4U-1 or -1A (early) would NOT be a good match against the current competition, and as much as I love the corsair, I'm not buying a 1943 plane to fight against 1945 planes.
