unknown Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) I noticed a strange sound above Mach 1 in the F/A-18C. Is this a sound bug or a feature? Never noticed this in other modules only today in the Hornet the first time. Alfredson007 Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 I hope it is a bug =) And it is pretty annoying. The another thing i don't like is i have no clear indication when the afterburners are on, i cannot hear any sound change. Don't know how it is in real life, but i am pretty sure IRL pilot knows when AB is on and when not, without watching instruments. Being it sound or a physical feeling....

In the Real f15 according to my SME, you cannot hear AB kick in.. How ever you know for damn certain it's lit by the feel of being pressed against the seat.. Keep in mind that there will be a convergence point where you're no longer under a great enough acceleration to feel it any longer and with out looking at nozzle position, fuel flow or speed you may forget you're in AB. On a side note, since my SME flew only the f15c I cannot say you cannot hear anything, but the AB may be even less pronounced then the f15 due to the f18 having far less thrust and if you're heavy it might not even be able to be felt. For the WIN [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.

One detail, GE engines use spray bars while PW engines use stages and manifold rings. Between MIN AB and MAX AB, the PW engines (the ones on the F-15C/E) will vary the AB fuel flow by changing how many rings are introducing fuel into the combustion chamber. When you go full thrust in the F-15, depending on model (I can't remember how many stages the -220 and -229 have), it goes really fast. You can really feel the kick between the stages. This is not very pronounced on the -229 though (it has fewer stages too IIRC - Could be wrong). GE engines don't use stages however, they have fully variable injectors. Regardless if it's MIN or MAX, all spray bars are introducing fuel into the combustion chamber. It's much smoother. I hope that helps, just my 2 cents. wizav Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 I taught that's a signal from an engine. Since I am Mig-21 fan, I was expecting Engine shutdown or something like that xD [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Eldur Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I've "seen" this in the F-5E as well last week when I did my first free flight over the UAE. What I really notive in the Hornet is, that everytime the "shockwave" sound gets louder, the avionics sound in the background almost drops out. I also have noticed this in several press version videos already, practically all louder tones make the avionics sound volume go down. It's a bit like forgetting to do this (this is one of the very first things I do right after a Windows install):
Xordus Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Man, it's pretty annoying. I have a Subwoofer and the sound is produced in the low frequency range so it sounds sorta like someone beating on your wall... Only happens over Mach1.
Chief Instructor Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Using TIR, I've noticed that this banging sound seems to tail off or disappear if I raise my view position higher after it starts - the sound seems to be influenced by the pilot's eye position. 311Gryphon Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Someone else may have mentioned it but apparently the Hornet makes noises when supersonic due to the air in the inlets I think. I don't remember at the moment what they called them. Having said that, mine sounds more "reasonable" while in your video it does sound odd to me...although I've never heard it in real life so can't comment on how real it is. http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
smallberries Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 Sound bug Popped my canopy for fun in the first training mission, and above an IAS of 560 the sound starts to stutter. Not the most pressing issue, I know xD
smallberries Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 On further inspection it seems a higher altitude may also be required, I couldn't reproduce the bug near the ground, but it appeared above 8000. Q.E.D.
