Svsmokey Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Ok so I moved my secondary monitor to the C-Port on my 2080 Ti. All indications are the Rift S is working properly without black screen now with two monitors! I would note my secondary monitor uses HDMI connector, however I was using an adapter to hook it into display port on my GPU. ( I did try hooking it directly to HDMI on GPU but issue persisted). So plugging it into the HDMI port on my C-Port adapter, and running through it, appears to have solved the black screen issue with two monitors running for me. Will report back if the issue does happen again throughout the day. Glad to hear you have potentially resolved the problem ! 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
Cowboy10uk Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Update: My Rift S is back alive, and I figured out what caused my black screen issues! My running two monitors - is causing my black screens. First, I got it back alive by removing the Rift S completely from Oculus Home, then doing a repair of Oculus Home. Then on a whim I shut down the PC, unplugged my secondary monitor, and booted back up. Put headset on and off several times, closing and reopening Oculus Home, and it worked every time. Shut down the PC, booted back up, and did again - worked every time. Shut down again, hooked my secondary monitor back up, booted up - tried same process, second time trying Rift S by closing and opening Oculus Home, black screen issue again. Shut down, unplugged secondary again, booted up - worked each and every time. So for whatever reason my Rift S only exhibits this black screen problem that has plagued me since day I got it, when I have both monitors plugged in. With just one it works just fine. I would encourage anyone running two monitors and are having same issue to give a try and see if that works for them also. I have sent this info in to Oculus as well on my support ticket. I may try hooking that second monitor up through the C-Port on my 2080 Ti and see if it will work properly in that configuration. Glad you’ve managed to troubleshoot it, do you still get the black screen if you’re 2nd monitor is turned off? Gonna be a pain having to get behind the system and disconnect my 2nd monitor everytime I want to fly. Although that said, I only have the thing to display my MFDs anyway, which I won’t need IF the clarity is as good as you’re all saying. Will find out myself in 45 mins. The S is currently sat in the boot of my car, just doing the school run and then it’s show time baby. Actually I have got it to where I can use both monitors - I moved my secondary monitor which has HDMI to my C-Port in the 2080 Ti , so far the Rift S is now coming back on every time with no black screen issue. Keeping fingers crossed but now seems to be totally resolved for me. I guess my Rift S for whatever reason did not like running with three display ports or two display ports and HDMI used on the GPU. Don't know if that is going to be unique to me or if others will find the same also. JoeyJoJoJunior Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 I have two monitors (DP, DVI) a TV (HDMI) and the Rift S hooked up with no issues, so I don't think having multiple monitors alone would cause the issue. The S does seem to be picky about hardware, just like the CV1. I've had no issues luckily (and didn't with the CV1 either), but man some people are having a hard time. You think Oculus would have learned something and tested this thing on a wider variety of hardware. i7 6700k @ 4.6, Gigabyte Z170X-UD3, 32GB DDR4 2666, GTX 1070, Rift S | MS Sidewinder FFB2 w/ TM F-22 Pro Grip, TM TWCS Throttle, VKB T-Rudder Mk. Bob_Bushman Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 I think others, and Oculus have warned against those power splitters and saying they won't help, and could fry your device, can't qoute a source on that though. I simply suspect it's wonky cables, and one of the first things that go to piss on a wonky cable is solid power delivery, and the Oculus S cable is just long enough to potentially see issues for that. I don't have any USB or tracking issues, but I have a fair few DP connection issues. But I'm also runing this off my external PCI-e inateck card, and I'm not using the onboard audio at all, that could possibly shave of a few amps. Oculus so far seem to be thinking this should all be able to be sorted in future firmware updates. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle.

Also I updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest version last night. Everything went blurry, it was like I was seeing double. I uninstalled and referred to the previous and now it's fine again. Madmatt_BFC Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) When you launch Oculus Home, if there is an update available, it will automatically download and install it. As for the latest drivers, actually I think I may have seen that too. I installed the hotfix 430.97 version drivers on my second gaming rig and while in a quick A10C mission, it did seem like my cockpit textures were a bit blurrier than normal. I was going to test more on this later today. You can elect to receive the 1.38 PTC while it is in testing, by selecting it in the Oculus Desktop app under the Beta tab I believe. It will then immediately download and install the PTC update. Otherwise, you are on release version 1.37 and will receive 1.38 when it reaches release version automatically. Oculus rolls out release updates over a few days period, so not all get it the same day. Madmatt_BFC Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. Madmatt - be interested to know what you think once you've tested those drivers some more. Actually, I apologize as I made a mistake. While I downloaded the hotfix drivers I did not install them. I am actually still running the WHQL 430.86 drivers and the blurriness I was seeing yesterday was because while I was tweaking some in-game settings I mistakenly lowered my Textures down to Medium from High. Once I set those back to High, all my cockpit blurriness was gone. Sorry about that. One interesting finding was how big a difference it is to go from Medium to High. I even took pics to illustrate this as I never knew it was that big of change. See below, Medium Textures first then High Textures. agathorn Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Well I finally got to test this with DCS. Damn you guys weren’t kidding, when you said it was a significant upgrade in clarity. I can actually read the mfds and operate the aircraft now. Think it’s fair to say, that finally I’ve got the screen clarity I’ve been hoping for since VR started. I can fully understand why so many of you are converting to the Rift full time. I think my 4K tv just may be surplus to requirements now. Yeah its amazing. I own both the DK2 and the Rift CV1 and I enjoyed VR but never felt it was good enough for me to fly. If you knew the cockpits REALLY well it was serviceable. With the Rift S though it is amazing! Near perfect clarity in the cockpit. I can read everything with no trouble at all. In fact I think the limitation now is my eyesight not the HMD! I have a small difficulty with focusing on things within arms reach. Outside the cockpit you still see the work is lower resolution than a 4K screen but I can live with that. dburne Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Ok so after about a day of working well, my Rift S sadly has the black screen issue once again! So what I thought may have fixed the issue, certainly did not as it is back in full force. So I was feeling bummed in that on the Return and Replace I started with Amazon on Friday was showing availability not expected until between the 12th and 30th of this month. I just logged in to my Amazon Prime account, and lo and behold I am greeted with a tracking number for the replacement and is scheduled to be delivered later today! Woohoo! Man I sure hope this new unit does not have this dang black screen issue I have been dealing with ever since the day I got this Rift S. Depending on when in the day I get it, I will report back either later today or tomorrow on how it does for me. Going to completely uninstall Oculus Home and start fresh with this new one. That may be, but considering I had zero issues with the Rift CV1 and it had two sensors, headset usb, and HDMI all connected to PC whereas Rift S only two connections to PC. So as far as connection to GPU, that just leaves Rift S with display port, and Rift CV1 with HDMI. Maybe the longer cable of the Rift S plays a factor also. One thing I did not try was leaving my secondary monitor unplugged for a couple of days to see if black screen would return like it has for me now after I thought it was fixed. Obviously I won't now as replacement is coming today, I sure hope the issue is not persistent with this new unit. I have seen multi monitor users report they have no issues also. clayvt Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 So ive gotten a bit of flying in with the Rift S since picking it up sunday. The motion sickness is almost all gone, just a little bit when doing hard maneuvers. I was in the 107th caucaus server and noticed something odd just now. in the cockpit I get a solid 40fps according to the in-game fps meter. but when I was tracking a gbu it jumped up to 80... It seems fine in the cocpit, no stuttering but is it possible to get it up to 80? I'm running it on a 2700 (non-x) OC'd to 3.9 and an RTX 2060 and 32gb of 3200 ram. Also, took down 3 Mig-29's on my way to the ground targets and holy crap it's so much better than a track ir!
Eaglewings Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 (edited) The load on the system in cockpit is a lot higher than when doing external views. The motion sickness that comes when turning would ease off gradually. I got my experience improved by turning my head physically in syn to the direction I am turning to. Madmatt_BFC Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 80 FPS with that system may be possible in cockpit view but you will need to play with lowering your graphics settings and see what you get. That said, you may not find the compromise in visual clarity is worth the higher FPS. Set Terrain Textures to LOW and set Shadows and Terrain Object Shadows to either FLAT or Disable them. Set everything else to low or disabled. Now that will create your best performance baseline. Slowly adjust settings one step at a time until you maintain a comfortable FPS with acceptable graphics. Graphic settings are unique to each person. What is acceptable to you may not be to someone else. Cowboy10uk Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Got the black screen today after about 45 mins flying. Strangely enough it was completely black on the monitor, but I could still bring up and see the escape menu, and as soon as I exited DCS the Rift was back to normal.
