Yellow-ish dynamic glare inside canopy

sirrah

Recommended Posts

I noticed that on some occasions (certain sunlight angles) I get this annoying sort of glare on the inside of my canopy.

Although I can imagine something like this also happening in the real thing, it doesn't really look nice at the moment in DCS.

I already disabled the static canopy reflections and selected clear canopy instead of yellow, but there seems to still be some sort of dynamic yellow-ish canopy reflection. Can this be disabled somehow?

I took some screenshots of the effect. It's like a yellow-ish glare moving over the canopy when the sun hits it at a certain angle.

Again.. I can imagine there would be some sort of effect like this irl, but there's something about it in DCS that makes it look very unrealistic and a bit annoying tbh.

2 more shots. It's far more striking/annoying against a dark background.

Does anyone recognize this effect? (If not, I should investigate what's wrong on my end)

Is it not the glare from the sun? If not, try turning off Cockpit Illumination if it's on.

It's definitaly caused by the sun hitting the canopy under certain angles. I'll search the options for "cockpit illumination" (can't recall I've seen that option anywhere)

You can also see it quite clearly in this YT video. Right at the start of the video you see this yellow "reflection" on the left side of the canopy. You can also see how unrealistic it behaves. It surprises me that nobody else seems to find this effect annoying. It quite seriously decreases visability when trying to spot air or ground targets.

Funny.... I read many customer complaints about the lack of realisme in DCS.

Now ED has put effort in the glare effect.... wrong again for some.

Fact is that this glare effect is pretty accurate, compared to the real F16.

Probably not 100% but very close.

To me, myself and I it isn't realy a problem though.

Happy flying.

Thank you for putting me away as some kind of whiner... Guess I earned that after so many years of supporting ED and trying to contribute to its improvement...

I was just trying to figure out if everyone was seeing this, or if something's wrong with one of my settings. As a former RNLAF F-16 maintenance specialist I've sat in the real cockpit countless times, but I can't say I've ever seen an effect even remotely close to what I see now in VR.

Do you have the "Yellow Tint Canopy" option selected? If so, uncheck that and see if it helps. I haven't flown the Viper in a about a month so I'm not familiar with that effect. Did this just start?

Not sure if it's new. I only recently picked up the Viper again, after not realy flying it since its release. I'll double check for the yellow tinted canopy, although I'm pretty sure I have it set to transparent

Ok, I see, I apologies. I sat in the real F16 cockpit ( 315sqdr EHTW) and didn't notice it.

I doubt if the early A/B models were equiped with tinted canopies in the late 80's-90's.

Have to say that the plane was parked in the shelter so no direct sun light.

I also worked on EHTW for about a year (313sqn), just before it was closed, then went to EHVK :)

Anyways, back on topic.. I'll let it rest and hopefully, with time, I'll get used to the effect

Sometimes 100% realistic isn't perceived as 100% realistic.

Just go outside and look at a moon very close to the horizon, how big it is .. and then take a photo and look at that. You will be surprised to see the moon is actually way smaller than you have seen it through your own eyes.

( Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_illusion )

With those glares, they do move in a different depth layer and they have a different brightness that might only be truly appreciated with HDR.

The human brain / eye can filter it way better in reality than in the sim. Hence a dimmed down effect might make it more closer to the real thing.

Much the same seems to go for spotting far away objects. Another sim out there has some options for smart scaling objects in the distance so that they appear to what's considered more naturally sized for the human eye in reality.

Looking at the video, the reflections seem to be related to the reflectivity of the overflown terrain. The same effect can be seen on the underside of the fuselage and wings when you overfly different types of terrain. I first noticed this effect a couple of weeks ago.

I agree with Deadpool that perhaps the effect may be scientifically correct, but may be perceived exaggerated to us in the sim and needs tweaking for that reason.

It may be exaggerated by the cockpit global illumination issues as well. Or just overdone in general. Or a product of a poorly simulated effect that works well on 2d but in 3d turns into a mess (like a lot of the other flat screen effects in DCS right now).

I dunno irl how it supposed to be, but i got to admit last week when i first flew the Viper, i set my time for sunset in Persian Gulf, and was impressed in VR with the effect, the sort blinding effect i got when that glare passes your eyes as i aileron rolled and the setting sun relfected on the canopy. I personaly loved it.

For me I like the glare but I think it's responsible for some heavy blinking / like some instagram filtering going on / off when reaching low altitudes (typically during landing).

It's quite visible in the video above at this moment:

But for me it's much more pronounced than in the video.

I already disabled the static canopy reflections and selected clear canopy instead of yellow, but there seems to still be some sort of dynamic yellow-ish canopy reflection. Can this be disabled somehow?
