Qiou87 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 (edited) I hate that I love the Hornet so much. I keep wanting to fall in love with other jets, but I always come back. It looks great, the cockpit is very nice for VR with big screens, and it sounds really awesome from outside. Best sounding jet in DCS right now, imho. It is also a lot of fun around the boat, and it is just so capable for every mission... Great job ED. I look forward to the last few updates until it makes it to "release" status. Just know this Hornet is now the measuring stick by which every other module will be evaluated. Yeah I had Janes F18 and I too was just a little too intimidated to really get into it. So glad I did not let DCS F18 do the same to me. Well it did for a while but I finally dug my heels in and put in the work to learn it enough to at least start flying some combat with it. The effort->reward cycle with DCS makes it such a great experience and keeps me going. The Hornet module is especially brilliant in this regard, I think. Yeah, Usenet was the Wild West. Unmoderated flame wars, LOL! 1
dawgie79 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I love the Hornet. Probably the most of all the modules I own. ED did a fantastic job with it, and still are. 1

Shiroka Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 So I grew up playing the demo of F/A-18 Hornet 3.0 on our family PC for hours on end. 9 yr old me with a mouse and keyboard (and no clue what I was doing) flying around Hawaii and occasionally crashing into the runway at full speed because I didn’t know how to land. Actually discovered DCS when I was having a nostalgic moment looking for old videos on YouTube and it was a suggested link. Amazing to see how far flight sims have come in 25 years, I echo the thoughts of many in here that the ED team has knocked it out of the park with the Hornet - and the first time I tried it in VR with a HOTAS... I work with computer software a lot, and don’t get easily amazed by fancy graphics on games etc., but I literally had to scoop my jaw off the floor... the immersion is incredible! On the downside, although I was never exactly a big gamer, I will say you’ve probably ruined computer games for me... because I have no interest in touching anything else anymore 4

pixie Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 (edited) 13 yr old me was playing Strike Force Harrier on his beloved Amstrad CPC 464. He had a joystick, curtains were closed for better immersion and little Frederic was both an introvert child and an imaginary pilot. Around this times Top Gun was out in theaters. 35yrs later I can say without hesitation that DCS F/A- 18c is the sim I have been waiting for my entire life ! I had this DCS Hornet-appreciation-thought today (when watching this 'old' Legacy Blues' video on the YT): I'm SO glad we got the Legacy Hornet and not the Super in DCS... The Super Hornet just looks fat and disproportioned to me when compared to the legacy. I was listening to Mike's (Aircrew Interview) interview with Brian Sinclair who flew both the Legacy and the Super in his career and he said he preferred the snappy maneuverability of the Legacy over the Super. But, even from a merely aesthetic perspective, the Legacy Hornet just looks right. Another reason I'm thankful for this amazing module! PS - I won't complain if ED ever offers the Super Hornet in the next 20 years. Edited March 8, 2021 by wilbur81 i7 8700K @ Stock - Win10 64 - 32 RAM - RTX 3080 12gb OC - 55 inch 4k Display
Boogieman Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 Hear hear! Despite what the naysayers might have us believe, I do think we are in a golden era of military flight simulation thanks in large part to ED's hard work. What a thrill to watch this masterpiece take shape. 6

The user-community has been spoiled (speaking, at least, of myself) by all that DCS has to offer at such a high level of fidelity, so there's often much (childish at times) whining and demanding that goes beyond helpful bug-squashing-constructive-criticism that is needed from the community to be sure. However, I would still maintain that the Hornet is so good in it's current O.B., W.I.P. state, that it could easily stand on it's own if no other modules were offered in DCS. Keep up the good work on this jet! We are rooting for you as you keep bug-squashing until this amazing module is fully baked. I was flying Baltic's Raven 1 a couple of days ago and thought, "my goodness... we've come along way since my days with Falcon 3.0 and Graphsim's Hornet." Your F/A-18C Block 20 as a masterpiece! Keep up the good work. Hey, ED Team... Just a friendly reminder that: You're Awesome! i7 8700K @ Stock - Win10 64 - 32 RAM - RTX 3080 12gb OC - 55 inch 4k Display

Her Mom flew up to help us out and we had a lot of time before we could see her in recovery. I thought it would be cool to spend a few hours at the Museum. Looked it up online and saw it was closed due to covid so I couldn't see the interactive Hornet cockpit exhibit, but one of the pics showed the Blue Angel Hornet outside the main entrance. The hospital was only about 10 miles south of the museum so I knew I had to go. After years of only seeing the Hornet in pictures, flight sims and flying above me at Blue Angel shows it was totally mind blowing to see one so close Edited May 14, 2021 by WytchCrypt 1 Alienware Area-51M: i7-9700K, 165Hz 27" ASUS Swift PG279 IPS with G-SYNC, 32GB DDR4 Ram, 1TB M.2 PCie x4 SSD, 1TB SSHD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6, Windows 10, CH Eclipse... wilbur81 Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 (edited) Here are some more reasons why I'll take the Legacy over the Super any day... in the words of Capt. Eric Doyle of the Blues: (https://aerobaticteams.net/en/news/i326/Is-the-Super-Hornet-better-for-the-Blue-Angels-than-Legacy-Hornet.html) Here are some words from Capt. Doyle about difference between the two Hornets: “The aileron roll of Super Hornet will be a little bit slower, maybe a bit more sluggish.” “The flight computer may require some work-arounds. In the pirouette maneuver done by Blue Angel solos with the current [Legacy] Hornet (which has its own FCS), the pilot points the nose skyward, kicks full rudder and the airplane yaws/rolls around itself. But the stock Rhino’s flight control software won’t let a pilot do that. So we had to build in a little ‘notch’ into the flight control computers to allow us to do a pirouette.” Sure seems like the Super took all the fun out of the Hornet. Bunny Clark Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Agreed! After pouring countless hours into Falcon 4.0, LOMAC, Jane's F/A-18, and the standalone A-10C module, I had taken a break from flight sims for a few years. A2597 Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 So, full disclosure, as a life long aviation enthusiast, I've never liked the Hornet. I was sour on it for replacing the Tomcat, and always viewed it negatively. I bought it only because I wanted a modern multi-role fighter, and it was the closest thing I could get (at the time) to my favorite plane, the Viper. This module made me love overcome my own opinions, and now I absolutely love the Hornet. It's become one of my favorite planes, and even though I own the F-16, I rarely fly it, as I keep coming back to the Hornet! Amazing work ED. 5

Wow, I've been through many of these as well. I started with Jetfighter II which ran great on a cheap x286/x386 - and an extra cool factor was I lived in the SF bay area and that's the map that was modeled...and you could land on a carrier! Then I moved to Flanker 1.0 and I was hooked on the ED train...the realism just blew me away and my favorite feature was the replay. I went through Hornet 3.0/Korea, Janes's Navy Fighters, EF2000, JetFighter III, Falcon but none of them could replace the thrill of Flanker and none had the replay feature. Long live DCS!
