When it's not bugged, anyway. Those campaigns are so complex that they must have unearthed at least one bug in every DCS version they were ran on. ED's testing team should seriously consider running a full playthrough of both of those before each stable release, and not release stable until all bugs they run into are fixed. Seriously, DCS mission logic is ridiculously brittle for something that is not very complex at all in absolute terms.

I must have fluked going through the campaigns and missing the bugs. I think there was only 1 bug I encountered, where it wouldn't cycle through to the next mission, which was overcome by editing a .lua file. I admit, I flew the campaign quite some time ago, so I have no idea how it works now.

Wait what? Are you saying a dedicated server will need all theatres added. I thought as a dedicated server the theatres were not needed unless your actually using the actual DCS world standalone.

the dedicated server as indicated

"DCS World Dedicated Server" installer installs a special DCS World version which intended to work as a dedicated server and doesn't contains textures and sounds. Installed server takes approx. 170 GB on HDD and works as a full-functional server controlled only by WEB (i.e. without any GUI features). This version already includes ALL available terrains and WWII units module, works without 3D graphics and sounds.

Terrain and WWII units doesn't asked activations when launched in server mode without rendering, server owner shouldn't buy them.

NOTE: these "free" terrains can work ONLY on dedicated server without rendering. You can't use them on the client.

I don't quite know what you mean when you distinguish between "dedicated server" and "actual DCS world standalone".  Dedicated server is the install that runs as a dedicated server (no client flying)- and it doesn't launch a DCS GUI install, and is in itself is the 'stand alone' server installation of DCS from what I understand.

If when you run DCS you get a GUID that allows you to launch and interact with settings, go into Mission Editor, instant action, etc - that's the client install. You can specify which terrain modules you want on that.

If the DCS you are running brings up a smaller DCS box in the screen and you can't do anything directly with it, but rather need to use a web browser to configure it - that is the DCS stand alone server that I'm referring to.

Also - note that in your quote above it says "This version already includes ALL available terrains and WWII units module".  The message is there to advise that the terrains included for free (aka - that you haven't purchased) that are included in the stand-alone server download can only work on the dedicated server" and not the client. This does not exclude the server from requiring or downloading them- but the opposite.

This isn't on the client, so if you're running a client as a multiplayer server you're fine - but if you're running a dedicated 'stand-alone' install of DCS - I think you'll find all are downloaded.

So unless ED does something and allows us to choose which terrains we install on our dedicated/stand alone servers so it's no longer including "ALL available terrains" but just those we choose - yes, I expect we're in for a significant HDD increase in the server install when the new terrains come out. I'd be grateful to be proven wrong!

Beyond lacking a livery manager, which has been requested before, I don't think ED is doing anything wrong with regards to space. Some programs just use more of it. This isn't anything new to flight sims where you can have as much as the entire world represented in many, many maps. Sometimes, even more than the world, I believe XPlane 9 mapped parts of Mars?

A large space requirement is just part of DCS. I recommend:

1 TB minimum SSD space (I have 700 GB of combined DCS installs on a 2TB SSD primary with a 1TB SSD secondary - My storage was built around DCS expected disc usage).

Additional space if you want to access the majority of DCS content and play other games.

Consider an external drive for your extra space, I recently got a 4TB drive for under $100.

If you have older PC's consider moving less demanding programs/games onto them to free up space on your simming computer.

Problem solved uninstalling and deleting everything, even the DCS folder under the user profile. And the other game that force me to dowload cockpits and models of WWI planes and WW2 tanks I don't own? Uninstalled it too. Going probably to reinstall the other almost abandoned sim, when Tobruk expansion will drop again to 50%. Otherwise will take a long break from flight sims. Goodbye and Goodluck.

Well, that's certainly a valid approach ... on my particular case, I enjoy DCS too much, so I did the same as you, but the other way around ... deleted every other game that I used to play (with the notable exceptions of Eurotruck 2 and American Truck Sim), this way I can focus myself on a single flight sim and make better use of both my free time and my disk space  🙂

I did that too except for one hunting game and it's only 10GB. I can't elk hunt anymore but I can still do it on the computer. Better than nothing.

You should try Carnivores. Nothing like getting eviscerated by a velociraptor while you're hunting 😃

I was just about having this "issue" again. Well, my 2nd 980 Pro (the bigger 2TB one for games) decided to start breaking (what a shame, but I'm well within the 5 year waranty peroid and only had games installed on it, so imma gonna RMA it which I normally wouldn't want to do with drives). Noticed because I thought, repairing DCS might be a good attempt to try for getting lost performance back, or at least to make sure it isn't caused by a corrupted install. Well, some terrain files had to be re-downloaded and those were on the 2nd drive (DCS is on my 1TB 980 Pro which also is the sys drive) with junctions pointing to that location. I then tried to simply backup everything onto an external HDD and a good amount of bigger files failed, so I had to do the real check:

samsung-980pro-2tb-failures.jpg

Well, talking about a 400 bucks drive wasted after 1.5 years. A quick google later I knew I wasn't the only one, they apparently had a bad batch and I obviously got unlucky (as always). Well, at least I had some luck when I snagged that drive for 20% off, so it just was 320€. And I could get a 4TB Crucial P3 Plus (it's got lower max bandwidths, but my second slot only does Gen3, 3.5GB/s max anyways) for just 300. So I took the chance to increase my available space, move that other massively huge sim that relies on a gigaton of cloud data off to the new drive and so I've got almost 300GB free of space on my main drive now. May the new maps come! Also, when I'll finally have my 2TB 980 Pro RMAed, I'm going to replace the system drive with that to have that one doubled as well. The 1TB will then get a cozy place inside an external USB3-case and will be my "USB stick" awesome.png

But well, the whole thing delayed my acquiration of those Quest Pro controllers for my Q2 (dang, I kinda hate how often my blows aren't even registered at all because I'm doing full swings in those sword fighting games). And the Steam Deck which I'm interested in getting... at least I can update both DCS and that other sim now without getting migraines again rdlaugh.png

You've obviously got a piece from a bad batch.
Been running 10 840Pro 500s for nine years. Not a single fault on any of them.
Guess I was lucky.

Cheers!

The final size depends on how much you have to download...

A basic install, with just the Caucasus map is around 80 GB. Here is an image where you can see how much disk each dlc takes.

For the recommended system requirements, it says that 120 Gb of free space is needed on the free disk, I guess that's the basis

You are correct, 80 GB is an old value that I got off the top of my head, sorry.

Is it possible to do a basic install without also downloading the Marianas map? Or is that also included in the 80 GB estimate?

yes, the marianas map is an optional, you install it if you want, once you have dcs up and running.

So far I have only used the Caucasus, and I did not download the Mariana Islands because of the location, if I am correct all the maps should be available with version 2.8, but certain ones will not be able to be used without purchase, I would be very happy to buy a map of Syria

Marianas is free, you could downlad and try it to see how it runs on your PC, it may surprise you ... here is a small piece of a DLC Campaign set at Marianas for the Huey helo, get a glimpse 🙂

ah ...

EagleDynamics DCS web installer (not Steam) of current client version 2.8.2 has a default install option values as " Full installation (Recommended)" with both free maps Caucasus and Mariana Islands turned-on to install.

Yes, we can turn-off the checkbox of Mariana Islands terrain in this screen when we don't need / like to install it.
