That sounds like a perfect solution, that way the users have a choice if he gets to amaze us all with his sparkling wit and repartee

Ahh, a fellow wing commander 4 veteran 🙂

But yes that option would be nice.

I have to say, the reason I have trialled the F-14 a couple of times but not purchased is due to Jester; not just the silly lines but I find the hum of the intercom a bit overpowering. Otherwise love it.

All these deadly serious sim pilots complaining about jester lately 😂, just turn the volume of the ICS down a bit or mute him altogether.

Jester will basically be the same guy, as we mentioned before - recording him anew for the F-4 would easily slap 2 years time on the development, and unfortunately is not doable.

He will eventually become more and more tailored towards the F-4, and Jester 2.0 will bring new additions and features, but in principle he will be the same guy, consisting of - mostly - the same voice lines.

Maybe at some point down the line we will be able to provide an option for call frequency, etc - but atm that is not planned. Thank you for your kind understanding.

I love Jester even if he does get on my nerves from time to time. Haha
But please consider making it possible to completely shut him up. As of now he insists on talking through AAR, which is the only time he actually botheres me.

Cheers!

You already can shut him up, silent Jester is an option.

@IronMike I love Jester and find myself talking to him during cruise phases of flight as if he could respond.

Eh, no! Read again. At least for me he will not shut up during AAR even if I've told him so.
I guess it's a design choice because he calls out the fuel status, which I like but I'm silly tired of "little bit left, right, teasing it, for Star Wars bla bla".

You can command him to be silent in the jester wheel. I have done it when I was first learning to AAR, he will not speak at all. If he’s still speaking when you’re refuelling then you might be hitting the wrong option. Unless it’s bugging out, I’ll have a test when I get home.

That's strange. Must retest then.

@MAXsenna if he doesnt shut up during AAR despite setting him to silent, then this is a bug. Please be so kind and make a report in this case.

oh, and btw @Spurts - talking to Jester is something we're looking at. 🙂 But careful, please, no promises for now.

Roger! I will when I get home.
It happens with the Viking in the Refuel Fight Recover QS mission.
I'll make a track.
Thank you!

Being a very silly "man" myself.  I like Jester. We get very blue in jokes when we do AAR.

The ability to speak to Jester without 3rd party software would be incredible - the complicated setup on voiceattack and other addons tends to shy some folks away, so this would be very cool! Understood on the no promises thing of course.

we should ask ourselves whether the things that it can do really are a necessary part of the human civilization.

None of this game or anything related to recreational computing is necessary for the human civilization - so - I see your point, but it's pretty moot here.

Except this is a non-sequitur, since AI can't write games, either. Go ahead and ask it - it does not produce usable code longer than a snippet, and even those tend to require "some tweaking" (read: a human brain that actually understands what the code does) to work. If you want to do anything at all with an AI, you still have to do all the thinking.

There are models that you can train yourself, which could possibly work, but you'd be dealing with a much more limited training dataset. I doubt it'd sound particularly good.

So you find your RIO annoying and can’t make him change his attitude?

Just simulate being junior to him and consider full immersion complete.

I don't think anyone implied AI could write a game.

My apologies, though. I thought you were implying that because AI is not necessary for human civilization, than to hypothesize on what it can do in game was a waste of time.  I must have misunderstood you.  Sorry bout that.

To your other argument, that AI cannot understand context - true.  However, context can be whatever a programmer creates for the AI.  If your sunset idea was a co-pilot, perhaps there is a way for programmers, during the training of that AI and initial set up, to give the AI examples of the flight terminology, and examples of the regular terms being used so that the AI can track the words and situations around which both are being used (the context, if you will), then it just might be able to have a modicum (it will never be fully dymamic, mind you) of ability to judge those situations and place them within the terminology's use accordingly.

Again, this is somewhat more advanced than what we would have from ChatGPT, but that is why I mentioned that it would be the next iteration.  It is not the current one, certainly.  It would be in the future.

I don’t have the F-14 so a quick question.
Can you silence Jester completely and just have the command wheel?

My point was that the only things it can help with are, by and large, brainless busywork that, in most cases, serves no useful purpose. Things that do serve a purpose tend to require actual human thought, which the AI is really poor to replicate. Just try asking it any trick question (say, "how does the wing sweep mechanism on the F-4 work?") and you'll see how shallow it is. Sure, there are plenty of humans like that, but that's beside the point.

There really isn't. What AI does is elaborate pattern matching, basically a very eloquent parrot. It doesn't have any information about what a given word means, just how often it appears next to other words. The result can be convincing if your initial dataset is large enough and your metadata is good, but in the end, it's not called a "large language model" for nothing. It's a statistical model of human language, utterly devoid of any concept of "meaning". The addition of context to the model will not be in the next version, and will probably never be possible with that specific way of doing this. Externally imposed context is inherently incompatible with LLMs, and putting it in through training data will be unreliable, particularly in situations when a mix of strict procedure and casual speech are both called for in one sentence (very common in radio comms).

They might be the best at making modules, but unfortunately Heatblur is wrapped in the reddit meme cringe humor bubble and they've it leak into a combat sim that it has no business in.  I've gone in and manually deleted several audio files in Jester's sound folder.  Anyone can do this without issue, just delete the speech files you don't like.  Jesus, even when I was a kid I didn't have such an awful sense of humor as they do.

Didnt they call the F-16 Viper partialy as a reference to Battlestar Galactica? Seems to fit the kind of humor Jester shows pretty well. Top Gun was also a huge cultural influence when it came to planes. Idk why you think those jokes are a reddit thing, the average redditor doesnt got much humor.

Is a bit weird to get so annoyed by jokes imo.

The stuff that jester jokes about has been part of popular culture since before Reddit was even a thing, I think it fits perfectly fine.

Im pretty sure I heared some stuff during a time personal computers were still a room full of low tech😬

Btw, I like Jester. Might be a age thing. Maybe a age 50+ label on the product might be in order.
