You do realize that Malmö / Sturup Airport is completely uninteresting from a military avaiation perspective, both during the cold war and today. It's just a backup location. For MSFS 2024 or other civilian flight sims it makes sense though 😉 Ängelholm and Ljungbyhed are the ones in Scania that where military airbases during the cold war. So was Kallinge nearby in Blekinge that is today a very active JAS-39 Gripen base.

But thanks for a great map! Looking forward to airbases that where actually used by the Viggen, not far from Malmö / Sturup.

I did a Gemeni AI search and there is only one case it could find of a two seat SK 37 Viggen landing at Malmö / Sturup for its final landing going to a nearby museum. So no take offs 😉:

A Saab Viggen did land at Sturup Airport (Malmö Airport) on at least one notable occasion.
Specifically, a two-seat SK 37 Viggen (individual 37800) landed at a field near Stenbäck's Flight Museum in Skurup (a few kilometers east of Malmö Airport) on October 21, 2012. This aircraft had performed its last flight in active service back in 1992 before being preserved.
The Swedish Air Force also used Malmö Airport (Sturup) for various purposes, including fire-fighting training with decommissioned aircraft bodies. However, the landing of an intact aircraft for exhibition purposes is the most significant event related to the Viggen's presence at or near the airport.

There have been Gripens landing there in modern times as it is a reserve field for the air force formally.

@MAESTR0, even though Ängelholm, Ljungbyhed, and Kallinge would be awesome to see, I understand if they are not in the scope of your CWG map. But still, Malmö airport is not of great interest for mil ops; that being said, I appreciate the effort and attention to detail.

Some great alternatives to the mentioned Swedish airbases would be too instead add the Sjöbo (https://maps.app.goo.gl/jKBhy66tFkje1U1n6) and possibly Kristianstad (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VUzWss5LeYig8rxe8) temporary war bases, and the Sjöbo road strip (https://maps.app.goo.gl/HcLkD1Q2oDCEmXwp7)

These military fields would be great for Baltic scenarios.

Denmark also seems to suffer the same problem with civilian airports, so maybe evaluate adding Værløse air base (https://maps.app.goo.gl/kwKg3BhYH2V32VQs7) near Copenhagen, which I believe flew both the coming F-100 and F-104. 🙂

Thank you for a otherwise great job!

I'm so looking forward to those awesome updates for my favourite map.

One thing I'd like to ask for - when adding SA-2 sites, please make sure they have an actual circular SA-2 layout with the correct number of launchers. The ones shown in the teaser pics look great, but seem to be SA-3 sites.

Here's a picture of a actual east german SA-2 site with its characteristic shape (on the left side of the area)

Was going to bring this up as the latest round of images of SAM sites were labelled as SA-2, when they in fact resemble SA-3 sites.

I'm not sure this site actually had an S-300 stationed here, so far I've only dug up FRA 4351 near Retschow, whereas this site is close to Erfut, nearly 370 km away.

Anyway, I want to draw attention to the fact that the centre of the launchers is raised up and flat - like a cuboid, which seems fairly common at DDR SA-2 and SA-3 sites, with a small c-shaped concrete walls enclosing where the FCR would be. The launcher revetments are clearly made of earth (typical of single-digit SAM sites) and have grass on them and all of the roads/tracks don't look like dark-coloured asphalt seen on civilian roads.

Also, at the 4, 8 and 12 o'clock positions you can see storage shelters for transloaders. I'm fairly sure at the 8 o'clock position, just to the north-west of the building with the dark roof is a revetted area potentially for the acquisition radar (a P-18 for DDR sites) and its associated electronics trailer. There should also be a revetted position for a communications system (likely a 5Ya62/63).

Generally though I wish Ugra would pick a real SAM site as it appears in satellite imagery (this one is a very good example) and then after a bit of deforestation, recreate it pretty much as is and then copy and paste where appropriate. Then do the same for the other types (Ugra has already done a decent SA-3 site, however there's no position for search radar hardware. The SA-5 site they have are all 3-battalion sites, when every single site in Germany was 2-battalion. Apart from launch positions and maybe fire-control radars, the sites aren't all that accurate to the real places) that would be fantastic.

Hi fighters
today we introduce you to our main heroes – airfields. They will become your home in your campaigns, and more of these homes are becoming available.

Bornholm (Denmark)
The only major airfield on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, a picturesque location and a vantage point for controlling the southern Baltic. The airport opened on November 16, 1940.

Bornholm-1.jpg

Bornholm-2.jpg

Bornholm-3.jpg

Brand
A major GDR Air Force base. MiG-21 and MiG-23 fighters were based here, covering the eastern approaches to Berlin.

Brand-2.jpg

Brand-3.jpg

Brandis
A forward Soviet air base in the GDR. Famous for its deployment of Mi-8/Mi-24 attack helicopters and Su-25 and MiG-27 aircraft. A powerful "fist" for striking targets deep within NATO defenses.

Brandis-1.jpg

Brandis-2.jpg

Brandis-3.jpg

Nordholz
The main base for West German anti-submarine aircraft. Breguet Atlantics operated here, hunting Warsaw Pact submarines in the North Sea.

Nordhol2.jpg

Nordholz-1.jpg
Notice the more uniform grass at the airfields, as you requested.

Nordholz-3.jpg

Nörvenich
One of the main fighter-bomber bases of the West German Air Force. Opened in August 1954. In 1961, and in January 1959, Jagdbombergeschwader 31 (Fighter-Bomber Wing 31) was the first German Air Force wing to be assigned to NATO. It was the first wing to use Lockheed F-104 Starfighters. The first "Tornado" was launched from this air base in July 1983.

Norvenich-1.jpg

Norvenich-2.jpg

Norvenich-3.jpg

Oranienburg
It was used by the Soviet Air Force until 1994 and housed Il-28 bombers, Antonov An-8, and Mil helicopters (Mi-2, Mi-6, Mi-8, and Mi-24).

Let's return to the autobahn runways. You asked for wider autobahn runways - we made it happen for you.

Adelsheim, where it all began.

"Base 90" (Swedish: Bas 90) was a Swedish Air Force basing system used during the Cold War. This system was developed in the 1970s and 1980s, building on its predecessor, Base 60, in response to changes in combat missions and the nature of the threat that had occurred since the development of the old system in the 1950s. The new system remained based on the principle of defensive dispersal—both of aircraft across a large number of wartime air bases and of airfield services across these bases themselves.

Impressive updates!! Can´t wait to see images of Finsterwalde, Falkenberg (Alt-Lönnewitz), Grossenhain and Welzow! Keep up your amazing work! And please, bring the updated and realistic Warsaw pact red force Hardened Aircraft Shelters variants, with sliding doors, exhaust channels/chambers in the back and workstations/storages on the side.

Very nice work!!!
Now, you just need to add Skrydstrup. It is quite literally just a 40km border extension. You've done the same for Soesterberg. This would make every single Dane happy. It was the main military air base in Denmark during the cold war, housing F-100D Super Sabres (*cough cough* Grinnelli *cough cough*), and F-16's. Today it is the only fighter base in the country, housing every single F-16 (well, what's left of them) and every F-35. It has also now been a host base for multiple NATO training exercises. There is literally zero reason to not add this.
Please Ugra.

Nordholz-1.jpg

Fun fact: There's actually TWO airfields in this frame. The grass airfield just to the North of Nordholz NAS (called Nordholz-Spieka) is secluded by a fence IRL.
The field just to the far side of the treeline is actually part of the airfield:

@MAESTR0 I have just one question.  Why is there a NATO flag there in Goleniow, if Poland was in the Warsaw Pact in the 1980s?

This look fantastic! So so glad to see that Ugra listened to our concers about the width of the road bases - they look so much more realistic now, and about the airbase grass textures - good improvements there. Excellent Ugra, thank you for taking on feedback.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it also appears from the screenshots that airbases have a lot less random equipment scattered around them? This is probably for the best as there was a lot of overlap between the ground equipment on the East and West sides that was somehwat immersion-breaking. It's best to have no equipment than the wrong equipment for sure.

@MAESTR0 Would there be any way of having all the small bushes around the runway not "pop" into view so abruptly when flying low level? As they seem to only appear into view at very close distance it always looks a bit silly. You could also just remove the bushes completely around runways since they wouldn't be there 99% of the time in real life anyway.

Another thought - I know your team is busy with developing the map itself but since you've gone to such efforts in creating such a detailed and realistic environment with this map, and given that it's a Cold War map, do you think you could make some low-poly Static Aircraft assets (similar to your current IL-62/ Tu-134) available for mission makers to use within the mission editor to populate the bases? We could really really do with things like An-2, An-12, An-22, IL-18/20, MiG-27, Mi-6 and maybe make the IL-62, Tu-134, B747 and B727 that you have already available to us as static objects?

Thanks for the superb work anyway and thanks for taking on board community feedback! Best map in DCS for sure at this point.

Question for map owners, is CW Germany a mostly flat map? any mountain ranges? Im guessing the SW part of map phase 1 got some hilly areas?

No real mountain ranges, but there is quite hilly terrain in the center and the southwest of the detailled area. It is by no means flat. And btw, people are complaining that airbases are totally flat - not correct for Zweibrucken AB at least, that one has a sloped runway. There might be more, I still haven't flown to all available airbases so far.

The NE ist mostly flat. South of Hannover, it gets more and mor hilly and higher.

Most of that fall under the category "Mittelgebirge":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelgebirge
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelgebirge

If you'd want proper "Hochgebirge", you'd have to chime in with the pleas of extending the map farther south towards the Alps (which I'd strongly support):
