It seems that everybody is excited about this 2.0 thing.

May I ask, what exactly are in the 2.0??

PFM and ASM for flankers??

DCS 2.0 will introduce EDGE, which is the new graphics engine for DCS World. The expectations are that the graphics quality and also to some extend the performance (FPS) will be enhanced. EDGE is also the prerequisite for the new map "NTTR" (Nevada) which is supposed to be released hopefully not too long after EDGE.

As the implementation of EDGE changes the core of DCS World, there are probably a lot of "minor" changes that come with EDGE that are not directly related to graphics. But there are no official statements made so far of what this really might include. But the expectations of the community are rather high - justified or not, that remains to be seen - and many small improvements for all kinds of issues of the current DCS World are what the people hope for. Some seem to see EDGE as the "Magic Silver Bullet" ...

Makes sense that a place with their own store would want to sell at their own store first... not sure how thats a cynical theory... more of a realist.... another cynical theory might be, if people knew that a good chunk of their money wasnt going to ED, and the reason that they bought a module was to do just that, support ED... would Steam sales drop off in favor of the ED store... Would make sense why things like Origin came along.. etc...

You mean Steam reduces the profit for ED and thus they have less money to spend on developing new modules? In fact Steam sales may be a reason for delays on EDGE, F-18 etc.?

Then I would recommend to ONLY buy through ED Store and not through Steam to support ED and the upcoming modules.

Losing the Steam convenience should be a small price to pay! :D

What Steam convienience?

A lot of Steam convenience. Faster downloads, friends list, and all your games in one place just to name a few.

And whoever is saying "Not all of your money will go to ED if you purchase on Steam." While that is correct, the additional market share ED has access to MORE than makes up for the 30% or whatever it is they give to steam. Wags even said most people still fly FC3. You think people that just want to jump into the game are going to go look for ED's page, download 5 files or a huge torrent. Then use ED's sometimes difficult website to purchase a module, then install it via the slow updater? Casual users will not.

Steam will/has helped DCS: World more than most of you probably realize.

It's Convenience is the same as every other game's.

You Find it, Click Buy, it downloads, simple. No Downloading multiple files/installers, etc.

It's a End User Interface that makes finding and playing games easier.

If you already have it installed from ED's installer you can add DCS as a Non Steam Game and have the friends list etc etc etc.

Yep STEAM definitely has it's place and brings in a lot of business that would not be here otherwise... In my case the only reason I don't use STEAM for DCS is having to wait longer for modules (I always do the BETAs) and the fact that not all of my cash goes to ED or the 3rd party devs..

Considering how small these companies are, it is a priority for me to support them as much as I can...

Absolutely nothing against any other opinions and those that like and use Steam for DCS more power to you.. Just my 2 cents worth on it...

^this ...plus I don't like the idea of fighting a legal case with Valve to transfer a licence to someone else ;-)

I didn't even bother to read the whole of this tread because I saw the word EDGE mentioned. Please tell me this isn't going to be another 500 + pages of wondering when EDGE is going to be released or that it's imminent.

He said: you rushed in, didn't read the thread, make an assumption extrapolating from one word and try to focus the thread on your assumption!

And between the lines: that you are wrong...

At least I interpret his post like that. :D

And exactly how do you suppose these get to be 500 pages long?

(I'll give a hint... Not reading the thread and then asking the very question that you didn't want to see..)

The updater might not be the fastest around but it does its job fairly well.

Unlike Steam you can decide to stop an update right in the middle of the download and still be able to play DCS.

Might be completely irrelevant for you but for people like me with a crappy internet it's the difference between enjoying my game whenever I want and having to wait a couple of days before the update is complete.

The Updater also allows for simple rollbacks to older version(s), if you need or want to.

outlawal2 has it right.

Steam is both a shop and a platform with 7 million daily users. ED just uses Steam like a shop, as they've already duplicated all the other bits themselves, so don't really get the savings/value of Steamworks. A lot of other dev shops don't want to deal with DRM, currencies, download surges etc. both in terms of operations costs and constant dev effort. ED pays their 'steam tax' just for the new eyeballs part, when it's really meant for the platform parts.

The thing to remember is that Steam is the 'Walmart' of PC gaming (if Walmart had 92% of the entire US grocery market). To ignore it is fun for the 'hardcore' but ridiculous from a business standpoint. If Steam brings in new DCS players then that's good for DCS right? The fan-base might just tolerate it ("I'd never go in Walmart, I get all my organic from road-side stalls!") but if used correctly might just pay for keeping the lights on.

You get the impression there is some snobbery and elitism, and some desire for exclusively being that 'organic road-side stall' while in the same breath complaining why things always take so long with a (relatively, industry speaking) tiny team/budget. Wanting it both ways maybe..

DCS EDGE................ the future is here!

Hey all,

If I may, well in my honest opinion I'm just hoping DCS Development after Update 2.0.0 build having a new GFX engine released and smoother code that it would be the beginning of a DCS Global MAP going by chats like in this Link............ http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2136993&postcount=211

Also adding many more 3rd party air craft and the continue adding of great air craft created with 3D full click-able 6DOF cockpits with at least 75% avionics implemented, there are so many needed that would make for great war scenarios.

Also more improvements in PFM + FM + AFM as per this thread....... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=122801 also this on ...... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=128090

Also hoping more speedy development of this nice sim after all the code-base work being EDGE release.

Not forgetting for each map adding a series of "WAR - Theater Campaigns" similar to this ......... http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2147095&postcount=14.

Adding more Training Ranges from around the word.

Also improved Single Player A.i more info here http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=128532

I hope that Cortex Design F-18E with Carrier Ops will also bring life to many other possible Theater and Campaign development.

So much is asked and wished in DCS Forum kinda hard to post it all in a short post in this thread but i guess we all get the general desires from this community.

Well we hope and wait!

Cheers,
