And this is also a very new medium, I have no doubt once a few more people get hold of the SDK we'll see some very creative additional effects - just as we saw with the first iteration of DCS World.

 

The huge step forwards is resource management. I have high hopes for that, and I'm sure in time we'll all be happy.

I intended to avoid taking part in the dispute, but some things must be said. The blurry look of the textures is actually accurate. When you are at 12 000 feet, you cannot see details on the ground both due to distance and air density. It really does look kinda blurry. Also, this is a desert, it's hot there, there is bound to be some hot air distorting the view.

 

Anyway, whatever. It looks good enough for me, lets just hope it finally comes out and the frames will be descent. That is really all I want from 2.0/EDGE/DCS Other Than Georgia. :)

I disagree. I was in an airplane over New Mexico a few months ago and at around 12000 feet the ground detail was still very sharp. While atmospheric effects are clearly visible in the recent Nevada screenshots, the closer terrain under the airplanes is not noticeably distorted by those.

I still can't get over how amazing the sky and clouds look in EDGE. If you look at the flanker release trailer ...the part at 0:36 where the flanker is flying across the sky, it looks photorealistic. I thought that was from a real life video.

So don't sweat it...ED is as picky as we are. Have some patience with the ground textures/mipmaps/noise maps whatever... let them finish it. You know they will keep tweaking it until it is acceptable to their standards.

Maybe its better to add a WIP overlay banner to future screenshots, to avoid discussion like those of the last pages.

Good lord, could we already stop with this "ED is not giving us update because whole community is complaing" while the reality is always like 2 or 3 guys kinda not liking something, while another 1000 are in awe? Seriously, everytime, one post "I don't like [insert WIP item]" and then another 20 making drama out of it.

Looks OK to me, I fly over desert (ours is a lot redder than Nevada) a lot and it looks fine. I also suspect there will be areas of high detail and areas of less detail. For such a large area it is unfeasible to manually add details everywhere and generating it procedurally creates it's own problems. Looks like they might have done a good job on the detail/performance/feasibility compromise (it's hard to know what it will be like in-game from screenshots). I will wait for release and see it for my own eyes before lodging complaints.

 

It looks great up close, but at a distance it certainly looks off. The detail in the current map on the current engine maintains sharpness at a further distance. It might be a WIP graphic engine or the map itself. Or both. But it certainly does look very blurry at distance to me.

Maybe not relevant to my facebook pge, but my videos on youtube has now passed 1.5 million views in total. Let's celebrate that with a couple of pictures of something you will see more of in the coming videos. Still Work in progress of course.

And if you're wondering why the first screenshot looks a little blurry, that's because I'm using the F2 view following my Mig-15 (hidden in the dark sky) and Depth of Field is in use.

Ya know I've been thinking... I wonder if instead of making whole new maps, just extend them! Over time the team (who ever Is making the maps) could add on to the existing or upcoming maps! like the upcoming Nevada map could also include los Angeles and salt lake city and parts of Arizona. What do you guys think of this idea? thumbs up or down :).

Nah... What is texture and what is detail depends on the viewing distance. When you are close to the ground, you see the texture of soil/sand, and take roads/plants as details. When you are far away from the ground, you cannot hope to see the texture of soil/sand. Instead, what was previously details now forms texture. So, however far away you are from the ground, you should always be able to see texture. In those screen shots in question, texture is pretty much gone. It looks awfully smooth. I think that was the reason for complaints.

 

That being said, I still can't wait to try DCS 2.0 out. It looks so much better than what we have for now... I don't expect it to be perfect though. Nothing is perfect.

If my memory is to be trusted, that is already in the feature list of DCS 2.0...

First flight in 2.0 will be several hours of low level stuff. I seriously wish ED would make an Ultralight. Just make something up.
