DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

Anyone else find it strange that these new rendering effects are being used on the "old map", which "will not be compatible" with the new renderer? I am not trying to dismiss anyone's hard work, but what I have been lead to believe is the new map IS the new renderer, and they are the same thing.

If it's not compatible then how are they able to display these pics?? It simply is compatible and my belief for the reason of the showing pics from the old map is to demonstrate it's ability to render the old map as well as the new map (NTTR). No worries here at all. Great progress ED!!

DX12 is coming out supposedly is much faster than DX11, any chance that EDGE could be easily upgraded or that would require a new renderer?

Got a GPU that has hardware support for DX12? :P

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Come let's eat grandpa!

Shouldn't be a problem getting an new GFX...

Then go ahead and order that DX 12 card. :)

When my favourite sim will have the looks like those pictures I will give up my job and fly the whole day DCS... (and let my wife do the working ;) )

I'm wondering about the system specs for a rig when "EDGE" will come out. Will an i5 processor still be sufficient?

Anyway, I believe DCS is the best SIM at this moment. Maybe FSX developers can better move to DCS :pilotfly:

Till ED doesn't do true multi core app, nothing will help.

It is not matter of CPU, but application.

Even now DCS has huge requirements.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Well if it's anything to go by i'm testing the builds on my Core2Duo E7500 setup and i can get by just fine.

Yeah buying new CPU to get more 5 FPS will be perfect solution :)

yep, there is no big steps in cpu/gpu developments recently :( = economic crisis

maybe in 2015

Its not the economic crisis, the focus has shifted to other areas away from the PC namely AMD has quit the high end computing and turned into the multi platforms chips while Intel decided to take a break from lack of competition.

False.

Shifting a rendering subsystem to DX11 brings with it many benefits in terms of performance.

I won't be that one... but I don't understand all this excitement: are we really accustomed to bad graphic to look at this shoots as stunning? We should compare it to the modern (others) games, not just to the current DCS levels.

What i see in those pics is: very nice 3D models, and this is not a news (the current 3D models of the prime cockpits and weapons are awesome already); but: very poor textures resolution and materials; average lighting; wrong environmental coloring.

Now i won't say that i don't like the progression, I am playing the current DCS after all and I will continue to do so, even with a "bad" graphic; but i won't call at the miracle, and certainly i won't say: "these pictures looks real..." .. because if those shoots looks real than a screenshot taken from a game with a stunning graphic (ie: Project CARS) what is it? MORE THAN REAL?

Let's be happy of the fact that this game still exists (it's a niche game and our only "save"), but we should remain down on earth, and "pretend" to have more (when/if possible).

unfortunately wtihout multi core engine the gpu is stressed/overstressed all the time while the cpu is lazy/idle :(

No!

You need to compare Combat Flight Simulation aka DCS with Combat Flight Simulation (add your poison here).

As an aside, how on God's Green earth can you justify attempting to compare DCS with other modern games (assuming you are referring to Titanfall, Battlefield etc etc as your post is vague in that respect).

Edit: Saw reference to CARS. Really?

I'm not sure what's "vague" into my post. I'm talking about two things mainly: the rendering engine (comparing to the rendering engine of the other games); and i was commenting people claiming that those images looks "real, for me "real" means that they looks like the "real life" (or to be simplistic: to real photos), then I said that those pics looks good (at least not worse than the current DCS) but far far far far to be "real" (then I posted an example of a game that looks "real"; i didn't meant to compare cars with airplanes!).

We should give real opinions and not be a bunch of "fanboys": critics will help to improve the product, pretending that everything is awesome (while is not) won't help anything.

I bought Take on Helicopters the other day as it was 90% on steam. I thought "ok this isn't going to be as good as DCS Huey in terms of flight modelling but it'll be a visual feast."

The Arma2 engine has been used alot in bashing DCS worlds visuals.

But TOH looks very similar to DCS after you've toned down the visuals to get reasonable frame rates and the map is tiny compared to what we have in DCS.

I'm glad I was born in the seventies and can remember when graphics used to be 2 or maybe 3 colours on screen.

Precisely, which is why I am still wondering what exactly it is you are comparing DCS to when you find it lacking in some or other respect. Opinions should always be corroborated by substantive fact if one's intention is to improve the product.

How would spreading the CPU load across multiple cores help anything at all if it is pretty much idle anyway? That was supposed to be the other way around, I guess.

And then DX11 is supposed to help with that, i.e. render more complex graphics with less CPU load and thus better utilize the GPU.

You may have a point, but do you actually think that telling the devs that their engine doesn't look real enables them to make it better?

If you *really* want to try yourself at constructive criticism, you are going to have to go beyond obvious.

@npole

Those other games have to render only a fraction of the area that exists in DCS, so this comparison is useless. Yes, they look better, but you can't recreate the same level of detail on an area that is exponentially bigger.

To be more exact, you can, but nobody will be able to run it. So we're back to the same point, having a game that none can play due to system requirements being too high is worthless.

I'm really glad to see that the testers are currently testing a build WITH the new IG. Granted it's still WIP and there is a lot to be done, just knowing that they have a build with it makes me think it's getting much closer than I thought.
