Teriander Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Im sure Im not alone when I say that I discovered Eagle Dynamics and A-10c through STEAM. I think it would be great if Eagle Dynamics added their DCS World to the Steam library. This could open up their titles much better to the STEAM community. Especially with the upcoming "Combined Arms" and the soon final release of the P-51D. These games look promising but I feel the marketing for it will not be strong enough. Unless it can be easily found on game sites such as STEAM. I can honestly say I wouldn't own Flaming Cliffs and A-10C if it wasn't for me finding it on STEAM, and Im very glad I did. Can't wait for the release of P-51 and CA. Especially if its on STEAM. Does anyone disagree?

Krebs20 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I personally like steam. I wouldn't buy many games if they were not on it. But ED and steam don't get along well when it comes to patches. I remember a lot of players not up to date on patches in early A10 release. Maybe when World is out of beta it will get better. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
sobek Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Has Valve finally managed to come out with a 64bit architecture compatible DRM for STEAM? Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
Teriander Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 Has Valve finally managed to come out with a 64bit architecture compatible DRM for STEAM? Im not sure, I didn't find anything about that on their site or wiki. I guess one way to find out is seeing if another game that you know of that uses the 64bit DRM is on STEAM. The alternative is to contact STEAM.
kokoweems Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I would love to see future DCS products on Steam because of their auto-updater.
cichlidfan Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I would love to see future DCS products on Steam because of their auto-updater. Aside from the DRM issue, there is also the fact that Steam, historically, was extremely slow in getting A-10 patches out to the user (on the order of two weeks IIRC). I like Steam, myself, but unless these issues can be resolved I will stick with getting stuff directly from ED. ED Team BIGNEWY Posted July 1, 2012 ED Team Posted July 1, 2012 I have always liked steam, but if I was a steam user I would download from ED and just use your key like we all do :) Its good that steam has raised the profile of the Sim to gamers that would not necessarily have looked into it before. 159th_Viper Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I would like to see DCS World distributed through STEAM for a period of time. That would definitely aid in raising awareness. That said, the chances are probably nil to f-all that STEAM will distribute a free product free of charge........nothing for nothing these days, which is a pity. The client could be distributed via that genre. They already offer Microsoft Flight via that category with DLC maps and aircraft. Rather similar to what DCS World is moving towards as far as revenue stream. Edited July 1, 2012 by BHawthorne

That said, the chances are probably nil to f-all that STEAM will distribute a free product free of charge........nothing for nothing these days, which is a pity. As BHawthorne has just mentioned, STEAM does have a nice growing Free-To-Play collection and I seriously doubt these companies paid an arm and a leg to get it on there. I've personally witnessed a few of the Free-To-Play titles explode in population when they were added to STEAM. "Tribes Ascend" for example added 7 thousand players online average just from adding itself to the STEAM library in the past week. It was already Free-To-Play. As for the Slow Patch Updating to A-10 last year. I'd like to add that I had contacted STEAM a LONG time ago about this issue, and they said patches are approved when the patch is sent to them by the Publisher or Developer. If they don't receive it, they don't add it. Even if its added on the Developer's homepage. With that being said, maybe Eagle Dynamics had stop supporting A-10 on STEAM for whatever reason. I seriously doubt STEAM would deliberately stop supporting or delay a patch for a fine product such as A-10. Besides, how else will Eagle Dynamic market DCS World if they haven't started already? I haven't seen it really being advertised, anywhere. Word of Mouth? Internet Searches? That could take months or even years to explode in population. The only thing I really want to happen is when Combined Arms is released I will find hundreds of servers, most of them full, lots of professional simers all in DCS World. That would be awesome.
Zakatak Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I would definetly like to see DCS products back on Steam.

Hardcore PC simmers are a small tight-knit bunch, compared to the audience for FPS games and such. Word of mouth and publicity on dedicated forums like SimHQ count for a lot, I think. Krebs20 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 All the free to play games on steam have a pay to win option. Steam sells the pay to win part. Thats where they make there money. The free games on steam all have pay for DLC. If ED were to release DCS World onto steam. It would have to develop the patches for DCS A10 and Blackshark for sale on steam for DCS world. I would rather have ED develop its products from its own website for the time being. Valve does take a cut, ED needs every penny. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Every game I own is due to word of mouth... I don't need splash screen spam from Steam ( And Origin in the case of BF3 ) every time I boot up my computer trying to get me to buy something I'm most likely not interested in. Not being disrespectful to you personally but when I rebuilt my computer, I refused to load Steam. I downloaded the files directly from ED and have never looked back. lubey Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I definitely agree Steam is a big piece of **** software. You spend all your time waiting for it to update all this stuff while you can't do anything but look at adds. No offence intended. But I wanted to play shogun 2 the other day and it hit me with a 5 GB patch! So I can't play it now because it will burn up my internet quota. All most probably for DLC which I have no intention of buying. But at the same time, while I can't understand why, a lot of the masses would be exposed to DCS:world through their steam installs. So in that case it's a great idea to put DCS on there, as long as I don't have to have anything to do with it. 1 SPECS: Intel Core i5 760 @ 3.2 Ghz +turboboost enabled, 12 GB DDR3 1600 @ 1500 Mhz, ATI Radeon 5850, TrackIR 5, X52 Pro and Saitek pedals
