I used an older version on nthusim....

Also, I have the razor hydra for positional tracking using opentrack. Opentrack is 1000 times better than trackir. (using the Rift)

With positional tacking you can lean and get a better view of the instruments/mfd's. I was using the targeting pod just fine.

Ok, so I set everything up, probably I can't get better with current setup.

I used stereo.lua setup in DCS to render stereo pair, and I used free tool - Oculus Overlay to make screen wrap (NThusim didn't work for me in DCS)

Eye separation in stereo.lua 0.6 (-0.3 and +0.3 for left and right views), 0-for convergence (you shouldn't use any convergence when render for Rift, otherwise images will not match). And tweaked Oculus Overlay to get image of a right size and so on.

I used TrackIR5 for tracking, and HOTAS + rudder pedals for flying.

First I was very happy that everything works now and I don't have nausea from this setup, and everything is in proper stereo. BUT damn the whole experience is crippled because of super low resolution of current DevKit and bad screen in general - color reproduction, pixel smearing... I mean it is awful, you can't read any gauge in Ka-50 or Su-27, you need to zoom in so the gauge occupy huge portion of your vision to read it. And I'm not telling about looking for ground targets.

I did some ground attack mission on Ka-50, and even killed some targets, but as it is now Rift DevKit 1 is useless for DCS. Sure one can experiment but certainly not playable. So now I'm waiting for hi-rez Rift to repeat my investigation on VR DCS. Shouldn't be long now? ;)

So, there's no tracking system that is built into the OR? Seems like a major pain in the behind (and wallet) to have both an OR and an external tracking product.

There is tracking system, but only for 3DOF (rotations, not positions), Oculus working on implementation of their 6DOF tracker in consumer version. Also currently DCS doesn't support Oculus Rift devkit, and that's includes tracking, one can use some hacks to enable it though, but I didn't went into that.

Yes targeting pod and Shkwal on Ka-50 works fine, but Eyeballs Mark1 are not allowing you to spot any targets visually in such rez. I was using TrackIR to lean forward, I can imagine tracking could be done better for HMD, but it was good enough for me experimenting with DCS+Rift.

My $0.02, DK1 is not useless for DCS. Its useless for combat but I have successfully flown multiple aerobatic demos as #3 on the Patriots Jet Team. The Rift allows me to look around the formation and have general 1:1 head tracking. Its the most immersive flight sim experience I've ever had, can't wait for a higher res screen :)

Just wanted to pass along some quick info about the shipping times on an Oculus DK1. As you know the shipping process was ridiculously slow when DK1 first came out, most people waited 2-4 months for their kit to arrive.I ordered mine on Friday Dec 27th,it was shipped on Monday Dec 30th and will arrive on Tuesday Jan 7th. I live in Florida and there is a holiday and two weekends between my order date and arrival date,so realistically you are looking at 5 business days max in the U.S. if you order......just saying lol

I have worn mine for hours flying etc. no probs, I just have to sit for 30 secs when I take it off. try and get your IPD setup right it is the main cause of sickness, An Optometrist will measure your IPD ask them to do it for infinity. then just put the data in whatever app you use. must say the longer you use it the less you see the screendoor and the clearer it gets.

Honey, I have to go to the optometrist.

Oh, good, you're finally going to get your eyes checked out?

uh....no. I just need my IPD measured so I can fly he Huey

LOL.

I just found this on Oculus website - web based IPD measurement. http://pd.warbyparker.com/

funny, I have a Screen the same size, that has a smaller dot pitch and higher resolution (1440p) as it was in a tablet that no longer functions.

*(i buy a ton of "As-Is/For parts stuff, just for parts).

I wonder if I can swap the Oculus screen out :)

As I am watching a Listing for an As-Is/For Parts Oculus Unit, with a broken screen (apparently someone cracked their screen somehow)

So to sum up:

New Rift prototype codename : Cristal Cove

- 6DOF positional tracking

- 1080P resolution AMOLED with low persistence- (eliminates smearing)

- lower latenency (around 30 milliseconds )

Did I missed something ?

EDIT: Oculus had nothing to announce at this time so 2014 is uncertain for consumer version. Apparently still everything (including so much needed for us resolution) is still subject to change.

ANOTHER EDIT: There is even a tracking dot on the back of the head for full 180 degree tracking- think now what happens when you turn you head slightly out of TRACKIR view:)

Wow! the waiting for the consumer version is becoming unbearable :) I'm even gonna wait with my PC upgrade:)

It is unbearable. This thing sounds amazing. I'm waiting on my full PC upgrade also. Actually, I'm awaiting EDGE for my video card. I don't think my 7850 is gunna cut it.

The rift though, that is a day 1 purchase for me. I just hope DCS: World is ready for it when it comes out. It'll make this sim outrageously exciting.

It's very likely that Oculus is going to begin to send prototypes to many software companies at some point this year. They stated that they are going to use the last investment in making sure that there will be plenty of quality titles the day the consumer Rift is finally available.

I hope that a set will go to the ED team.

+1.

I hope they finally realize that Rift device is ideal for cockpit sims and not these gizmodo I'm walking, tripping around my room, touching things-kind-a-experiences :pilotfly:
