A grounded commissioning engineer, now sitting turning papers...

Been travelling the world since '07 doing commissioning jobs on gas turbines and mine hoists. Seen many strange places...

- Northenmost Russia in winter. Flew there with Aeroflot Nord in an old Tupolev bomber (glass nose) peace time equipped with extra seats. Flew the last miles with an old MI-8 helicopter and a drunk pilot. Talking to ex-Spetsnaz that spent the whole 80's in Afghanistan.

- Been sitting in a fenced compound in Saudi Arabia with armed guards. -"If terrorists attack, hide under the tables", we were told. Got stuck in Saudi customs together with a bunch of eastern european sailors.

- Seen every bad part of China. Talking to colleagues that just heard a guy screaming while falling 600 meters down into an open mine shaft. The poor guy's friends had to go down with plastic bags trying to find all the parts.

But now, sitting in a cosy office chair trying to avoid my boss.

I don't know why people complain about this asbestos stuff...it don't smell so bad.

Is that's because the terrorists were told to shoot the ones hiding under the tables? :D Seriously, did they tell you why and I'm curious what the spetsnaz guy told you.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

Ah, my bad... It was the security officer at the work site that told us to hide under the tables in case of an attack. They had one guy armed with a pistol at the gate and it took the police and military almost an hour to get there. At the compound we had guys with AK's patrolling. Except during Ramadan when they were sitting with their guns a couple of meters away from them eating and drinking; but I guess the terrorists also celebrated Ramadan so...

What would a spetsnaz guy do,? Hug him and offer a hot beverage from his thermos.

Almost. We bought eachother beer and vodka. But when his eyes turned black and his muscle memory kicked in and he started locking and loading imaginary firearms it was time to leave...

Foo Fighter.

What about the asbestos stuff, how did it get into your neurons?

It’s a light question not a diagnosis.

Joey45, one step each day will get you there, I know you can do stuff, look at the demand of skills in jobs sectors. The eye sight is important, beer exosomes are important for creativity, charity is important for capitalism, so pick and choose.

Join the club. Millions of euros go by my hands and nobody gives value to my work. A gardener in Germany gets better paid than I do. But it could be worse MUCH worse and I do love what I do.

Was an active duty Army Military Police for 5 years, now reserve. For the day job I'm the lead draftsman on a UAV for the Army, and volunteer with my local sheriff's office SAR team. (Doing ground tracking, tech rescue, swiftwater rescue, and helo based rescue.)

This hobby actually got me the job - for my first pit, I taught myself solidworks to design it.

I always wanted to be a fighter pilot. My grades weren't good enough so I went for officer training in the Army in hopes of becoming a chopper pilot. Didn't really work out in the end :-P

I once considered a pilot career too, but deep down I knew I wasn't really good following orders, being disciplined by disgruntled superiors or told what to do against my will, I eventually turned away from it. It wouldn't work out either :D
