1-Bf-109K4-11.JG3-(Y1+I)-Martin-Deskau-WNr334176-Pasewalk-1945-01.jpg

Lets chat about the 3 initial aircraft for this sim. Share pictures, info or tell me why _____ is better than the other 2...

  • Republic P-47D-28 Thunderbolt;
  • Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX;
  • Messerschmitt Bf-109K-4;

My personal favorite has always been the Spitfire, variant wise I am not picky, in fact I would love to see earlier versions done as well at some point. Of course I cant love the Spitfire without loving the 109, the P-47 I dont know as much about... but I look forward to all 3 for sure...

I'm guessing that a hell of a lot of Cliffs of Dover flyers will be a bit confused by the rear fuselage tank in the MkIX, with it's 'marked reduction in longitudinal stability'! :)

Luckily I already have the pilot's notes for the MkIX, so I'll be psyching myself up in anticipation. The Jug is a beast, with no water-cooling to worry about and pretty uncatchable in dive. Can also carry a huge amount of ammo for it's eight .50cals. I should think the turbo-supercharging will bring a new meaning to 'complex engine management' though. 109s I have no idea about, really.

my favorite is definitely the K4,...uhh i mean the spit, no the p47...well i dont know :)

my favorite WWII warbird has always been the 109.but within this simulation, and such a level of detail, i think ill just have to love all of em...

Each have elements that appeal to simmers but no other aircraft provides as good 'I'm in the cockpit' feeling as the cosy 109 with it's coffin-cockpit. In Battle of Britain 2 Wings of Victory I always flew Spitfire campaigns and missions but when I was feeling like cruising over some countryside I always mounted the 109. Manual propeller pitch control in the E4 did have something to do with it. What kind of prop control the K version used? Any obvious operating qualities related to it?

Yes, some of the best times I have had are on flights where I have to try and nurse my plane home, the P-47 looks like it can take a beating... looking forward to that for sure...

Doing ground attacks with the P-47 and bringing it home with 3 cylinder heads hanging out the side... that would be something to experience!

The P-47's my favorite. It's ceiling was the highest... And it's weight made it dive like no other. It'll be interesting to see tactics come into play amongst dissimilar aircraft.

If you can get a height advantage.... You should be able to boom and zoom. Dive in, hit them hard... And zoom climb back up to height.

If you can find it; try reading Robert Johnsons Thunderbolt! there's a description in there about a mock combat between him (in a p47) versus an (early?) mk IX. The Mark IX lost btw.

Also I'm entertaining the notion of having a discussion with Heinkill of the CLOD redux fame about a continuation of that story that has the main character flying the Thunderbolt....

So yes, in this case I'm torn between the P47 and the Mk ix Spitfire...

I too have an affinity to the spitfire as my grandfather served as an armourer on a spitfire sqn during WW2. But I love aviation and will love all 3 aircraft being developed. I do hope it is a razorback P47 because I think it looked much better. My personal opinion of course.

Spit has always been too easy to interest me in other sims, so I'm most looking forward to the 109 and P-47 among these 3.

Many of us associate the P-47 with ground attack, but it in reality it was the fighter that broke the back of the Luftwaffe in the ETO. The Thunderbolt shot down more enemy aircraft than any other American fighter.

I've always been an avid fan of the 109, the F4 being my favorite. But on the Western front in 1944 I'll pick the Jug for it's surviveability.

None of them is unequivocally better than the others, so I'll just have them all please :D

I don't get it. They've chosen very late war aircraft ( the 109 k for example) but the chosen battleground is Normandy? The war had moved on to the Rhine and Northern Europe by the time these aircraft were in action.

They have the most documentation for the K and so they chose that model...I would prefer the F4 but I'm OK with the K

I think the P-51D that was released was a fairly late war airplane too... So though the map may be a bit off... At least the airplanes are all fairly equal. To bad they didn't chose the P-47D-40. It had zero length rocket stubs... All the earlier P-47's had the bazooka tubes that weren't as accurate.

I find this comment by Luthier a bit puzzling.

I've been collecting Bf 109 reports for several years from main archives (PRO/NA, NASM, BA/MA, EADS), and K series are, by far, the least documented variant in terms of flight testing.

I wonder if it is going to be possible to glide a Spitfire across the channel?

Edit: That is if Southern England ever gets made.
