Here's an applet I've created for me (G15) and a friend (G19), and I thought I would share. It's quite a simple list of the different information concerning the airfields, such as the tower frequency, the Tacan channel, etc. displaying on the LCD screen. Here's what it looks like on both LCDs: Thanks to SHU77, the data is taken from his awesome diagrams. Note: The applet has no priority, so you will have to select it from your keyboard once it's running. [update: V.1.1 is uploaded] [Link is pending review] [Temporary ext. link]4 points

Actually, more advanced physics sees thermal energy in terms of 'statistical mechanics'. An increase in entropy (disorder) in the state of the system (particles) is a result in transfer of energy by photons, and what we notice as macroscopically as 'heat'. The increased disorder may be due to mechanical energy of the system (Brownian motion) or rotational energy around molecular bonds. To understand how temperature affects intensity in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum you can use Planck's Law (if you assume the emitter acts as a 'black body'). Planck's Law gives the spectral radiance at each wavelength for a given temperature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck%27s_law Don't look at the equations (you'll go cross-eyed), look at the graphs of the spectral emission for temperature. Notice how hotter objects emit more overall and have distributions with peaks toward lower wavelengths (higher energies). The difference in the wavelengths of the peaks is what IIR (Imaging Infra-Red) cameras use to discriminate objects (of they emit at different temperatures). These cameras must be sensitive to notice the small wavelength changes for different objects (and also need to be cooled so that the camera itself doesn't emit at the wavelengths of interest, or its own emissions would swamp the signals of interest). Objects with similar temperatures to people emit in different parts of the IR band. Cooler objects may emit with peaks at longer (lower energy) wavelengths. On a very hot day trees may have a similar temperature to the temperature of a human body, which makes it hard to distinguish between them in warm weather. In colder conditions (snow on the ground) the difference between ambient and a human is much higher and discrimination is much better. Hot objects (burning vehicles) may emit in the long wavelength end of the visible spectrum. These objects are 'red hot' (visible) with additional emission past red and in the IR part of the spectrum (which we feel as the heat). Even hotter objects (The Sun's photosphere) can emit with a peak at the shorter wavelength end of the visible spectrum, eg. the Sun's peak emission is in the green (which is why plants work at that wavelength and our eyes are especially sensitive to it), although it produces so much light in other colors we see them mixed together as white. That's the emission spectrum. We don't need to worry about the absorption spectrum for objects in the field of view of the Litening pod. They are opaque so you can't see absorption of the spectra of objects in the background. For A-10C we don't worry about this, but in fields such as astronomy they use the fact that some non-emitting (dark) objects such as nebula can be understood by what light they absorb from emitting objects in the background rather than what they emit. I think ED have done a pretty good job of IIR cameras (I have used a real one on a P3 Orion) - especially within the limits of what can be achieved on PC hardware within a reasonable development time.4 points

Hi all, I'm writing a game diary on this sim on Quarter To Three. Here's the first entry: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2011/03/14/a-10c-warthog-me-vs-alphabet-soup/ It's from the perspective of a flight sim newbie, so it may not be of all that much interest to folks here, but I thought some of you might find it interesting. Enjoy!3 points

Not necessarily. Eg.: A decomposition: out of one molecule you get two of then, no energy transfer but increase of entropy. "Heat" is not the property of a system. We say a milkglass is hot. It's wrong; It is not hot until you put your cold fingers on it. This, and the whole part about PLank's law is on spot! It shows exactly why it is inexact to associate heat with IR. Also, you feed energy to a molecule, it is the property of that molecule how it will give that energy back: The best example is: You give energy to a light bulb, and it gives light. You give the same energy to the Track IR emitter on top of your screen, and it gives you IR. Question: which one is hotter? As a bottomline, a IR receiver has *nothing* (in this context) to do with heat. Yes, IR emitters are to some degree "hot" if you touch them. But saying they emit IR because they're "hot" is wrong. It is just the explanation given so that normal Joe can understand it.2 points

Post photos, footage, reports, news, etc. in this thread. Its purpose is to collect in one place info of military operations that are/will be conducted in Libya. As you may already know the United Nations Security Council voted on Thursday Mar 17, 2011 to impose a no-fly zone over Libya. This is the Military and Aviation section of the forums and this thread is about the military and aviation aspects of the conflict, so refrain from flaming and posting political comments! The following photos show USS Enterprise and ships from its escort. Currently they are located off the libyan coast: RED SEA (Feb. 16, 2011) The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), right, and the guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) move in close formation.

HawgTouch is a simple light-weight framework which allows you to create your own cockpit panels for DCS-10C. The software is bundled with 2 MFCD's, a UFC panel (Thanks to jeffyd123 @ ED forums): Included profile ShowcaseProfile.xml which demonstrates tabs, scaling and latest additions Version 1.25 changes - Fixed a bug where keystrokes of Rocker Switches weren't sent - Fixed a bug where keystrokes of Two State Switches weren't sent - Fixed a bug where keystrokes of Three State Switches weren't sent - Fixed panel closing and tab switching crash - Added a "drag" button to the top right, to drag, click and hold the button - Optimized code and image handling - Profile parsing improved, now showing detailed exceptions if profile is illegaly formatted - Two State switches now support multiple types: - On/On - Momentary/On - On/Momentary Take a look at the "TestPanel" tab in the ShowcaseProfile.XML to see how to assign switch behavior - Three State switches now support multiple types: - On/On/On - On/On/Momentary - Momentary/On/On - Momentary/On/Momentary Take a look at the "TestPanel" tab in the ShowcaseProfile.XML to see how to assign switch behavior - HawgTouch now ships in two executables. x86 and x64 Version 1.2 changes - Fixed bug in ClickButtons long press. Now working - Added support for tabs - Added panel scaling mechanism - Added audible clicks option - Better keypress engine, no more flashing HawgTouch now supports tabs. At least 1 tab must exist in every profile. Once a profile is loaded. A tab control box appears which allows you to switch between tabs. The tab control box can be latched to 9 locations of your chosen monitor. This is done by specifying 2 parameters in the profile XML <LatchTo></LatchTo> Available parameters: - UpperLeft - UpperMiddle - UpperRight - MiddleLeft - Middle - MiddleRight - BottomLeft - BottomMiddle - BottomRight The tab control box is also dragable. <MonitorID></MonitorID> Specifies which monitor the tab control box will latch on to. To get the ID of the monitor you'd like to latch the tab control box to, click on the "Monitors" link on the main HawgTouch window. It will display your local monitors setup. Sample profile XML with 1 tab and 1 panel: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Tabs> <LatchTo>UpperLeft</LatchTo> <MonitorID>2</MonitorID> <Tab> <ID>1</ID> <Name>Test</Name> <Controls> <Control> <Name>Up Front Controller</Name> <PanelImage>\Images\UFC\ufc-main-panel.png</PanelImage> <X>80</X> <Y>10</Y> <ShowTitleButtons>true</ShowTitleButtons> <SizePercent>100</SizePercent> </Control> </Controls> </Tab> </Tabs> Supported controls in 1.1: - Click Buttons - Rocker Switches - Two State Switches - Three State Switches HawgTouch is fully "customizable", allowing you to use your own skins and graphics in any size you choose to make. Setting up exported MFCDs: 1.HawgTouch comes with a default skin in which the MFCD "transparent" zone is 400x400 pixels. With additional 186x146 pixels for the bezels. Therefore the MFCD's rendering in your multi monitor setup LUA file should be to 400x400 pixels to fit inside the frames. This is my multi-monitor setup: (1x 24" @ 1920x1080 and 1 x 22" @ 1280x800): _ = function(p) return p; end; name = _('My_example'); Description = 'Two monitor configuration'; Viewports = { Center = { x = 0; y = 0; width = 1920; height = 1080; viewDx = 0; viewDy = 0; aspect = 1.6; } } LEFT_MFCD = { x = 2050; y = 105; width = 400; height = 400; } RIGHT_MFCD = { x = 2650; y = 105; width = 400; height = 400; } UIMainView = Viewports.Center2. Now you will need to set up the keys in DCS A-10C control settings which are mapped to the MFCD profiles in HawgTouch. HawgTouch comes with 2 MFCD profiles which are configured to the following keys: Left MFCD OSB1 through 10 - Left Control + 1 through 0 Left MFCD OSB10 through 20 - Left Control + Left Shift + 1 through 0 Right MFCD OSB1 through 10 - Left Alt + 1 through 0 Right MFCD OSB10 through 20 - Left Alt + Left Shift + 1 through 0 Here is in-game screenshot of the controls binding: You can set any key combination you want. Here are the key shortcuts: (Made identical to TouchPal for easier transition) {BACKSPACE} {TAB} {CLEAR} {RETURN} {LSHIFT} {RSHIFT} {LCONTROL} {RCONTROL} {LALT} {RALT} {PAUSE} {CAPSLOCK} {ESCAPE} {SPACE} {PAGEUP} {PAGEDOWN} {END} {HOME} {LEFT} {UP} {RIGHT} {DOWN} {PRINTSCREEN} {INSERT} {DELETE} {LWIN} {RWIN} {APPS} {NUMPAD0} {NUMPAD1} {NUMPAD2} {NUMPAD3} {NUMPAD4} {NUMPAD5} {NUMPAD6} {NUMPAD7} {NUMPAD8} {NUMPAD9} {MULTIPLY} {ADD} {SEPARATOR} {SUBTRACT} {DECIMAL} {DIVIDE} {F1} {F2} {F3} {F4} {F5} {F6} {F7} {F8} {F9} {F10} {F11} {F12} {NUMLOCK} {SCROLLLOCK} You can mix all sorts of shortcuts for your liking. Most will work but I can't gurantee crazy combos since I haven't checked it myself. Creating your own panels: HawgTouch gives you the liberty to create any panel you find useful for your simming pleasure. Take a peek at the TestPanel.xml file for information of how to use the different controls HawgTouch supports. With time and by request more complex controls will be added! UFC bundled in 1.1 (Thanks to jeffyd123 for the image works!) NOTE: The key commands for the UFC are not set! Once you set your UFC key bindings in-game, open up UFC.xml and fill in the KeyCommand slots! My setup: Download: HawgTouch 1.25 x86 [1.03MB] HawgTouch 1.25 x64 [1.03MB] Extract anywhere. In this version the last known position of the panels is not saved. You will have to manually set it to the specific panel. To help you achieve that a new button has been added to the panels which shows the current windows X/Y positions. Once you are happy with your position you can type that data into the panel XML and it will be launched in the position you saved. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are running any Windows version with UAC enabled (Vista and higher) and you are running DCS A-10C as Administrator you will have to launch HawgTouch as Administrator aswell. Orelse the keystrokes wont be sent to the game. You will need .NET 4.0 to run this so if you don't have it installed make sure you run a Windows Update or download it from here : .NET Framework 4.0 Download Tested on WinXP 32/64, Win7 32/64 Enjoy! Hey all, Just a quick post with a link to some pics of recent work. All the parts shown have been laser engraved and I plan to offer parts for sale in the coming weeks. Sorry for the bad lighting, took these with my phone. The knobs are replicas of actual knobs from some actual warhhog panels. I have a couple more styles of knob to reproduce, but expect to be able to offer all the knobs in the pit (or worst case, 90% of them:)) Pics here More to come... :)1 point

Edit: I have traced the bug, improved timings and incorporated voice comms. Please see new thread for final version of the mission. Guys, this is a good, tactical, 2-ship, half-hour CAS/escort mission, air-started, with JTAC. I was inspired by film footage of Hogs flying in support of U.S. infantry in the mountains of Afghanistan and wanted to recreate the seat-of-the-pants mountain flying in the Caucasus region of DCS A-10. The mission is well evolved, enjoyable to fly/fight, thoroughly playtested and has a full briefing, range of events and triggers and radio messages. It's not really a Beta at all except... There is a DCS crash (failure) notice on exiting the mission that has been driving me around the bend. You still get the debrief but the failure disables my TIR, making a restart necessary and eliminates the track file for the mission. I cannot tell you how hard I have worked to eliminate the bug, which only appears to occur in this one mission, and did so in the A-10 Betas as well as in the release. I have tried different Maverick loadouts, disabling Windows Aero, updating my nVidia drivers but now find myself stumped and demoralised. I have a high-end gaming system with an nVidia G285. I think you will enjoy the mission, the flying and fighting are good and it accomplishes what I always seek in mission design in all high-fidelity sims, which is to compel the player to make a few tactical decisions under pressure. You should use your wingman, avail yourself of JTAC and respect the SAM-9 engagement envelope. It's a good CBU deployment mission. At MT + 30 min exactly you will get a message informing you of your success or failure. (And the individual infantry units are each named after my high school classmates, 35 years ago). I'd be really grateful if you could help me out here. It would be good to know if you all experience a similar issue or whether it's specific either to my system or to the way I play the mission, both of which seem unlikely to me. There must me some small mission design gremlin that is causing this; please help me identify him and squash him flat. .Miz attached. Thank you.1 point

It's a good feature. Hope it's easy on the FPS, if it's not, please make it optional as I am sure you will if this is the case. Also, and sorry for asking, are there any plans to make rain effects in the canopy? That would also be great, since the rubber on the Ka-50 wipers are cracking already... :P EDIT: I forgot to ask if this is going to appear in Ka-50?1 point

If the best and only figures available lead to revisions of an order of magnitude in ACTUAL operations, then yes... I will take the grain of salt. I'll take the whole salt mine. This is something that has happened since Korea. Officially, the loss count inflicted on the enemy were downgraded by 50% in that A2A conflict. And this sort of revisionism seems to be systemic. It's also prevalent in many other defence forces so nobody is unique in this regard.1 point

watching the twitter page I actually saw another thing that drew my attention. can that reefer to the rumors about DCS:F18? As for the dedicated server, considering the fact that the server only needs to track the mathematics of the units, I really hope it would allow other OSs to run the server. i.e Linux. I hope that they will be able to follow the Half-life server model and supply us with a dedicated binary, that does not require game license to run. I'm fine with TS model of licensing - free for community, paid for commercial applications, so if someone wants to sell you a server they need to pay ED. if a squadron wants a server, it will be for free. that way ED has the ability to partially monitor that their efforts are not going for the "wrong" hands.1 point

They emit IR because they radiate heat in the form of photons when the particles in the system drop an energy level. This is the same explanation for almost all light, it is just IR happens to be located right below the visible spectrum. Though it is also true that the more energy that is bled, the hotter the object will look through FLIR. If you want proof of this, try setting up a couple of incandescent light bulbs right behind you while you are using a TrackIR and see how well that works. Hot things radiate in IR, as they start to get warmer, the heat is radiated in shorter and shorter wavelengths until eventually the heat is being radiated in the visible spectrum, and then tops off around the 500 nanometer(green if I remember correctly) area. However most things you will(hopefully) encounter in life only get to the red part of the spectrum, and that is hot enough. You want proof? just go wave your hand around an electrical stove on high(don't touch it though).1 point

Shoot, haven't seen that since Nellis in the Beta's. I'm sure it is hard to pin this one down, as some seemingly invisible entity at certain airfields seem to cause it. NWS was proffered early on as a possible cause, but never seemed to pan. Some airfields just seem to have `hawg gear eatin' poltergeists...1 point

and about the alpha particle.. yes it is very limited range (10-15cm and cannot penetrate the skin but will damage it skin is kept bombarded with it) the problem is how far the elements emiting them get carried.. well and where they end up... if some fish gets it and you eat that fish, it will end up in you... and that is not something to ignore. I am very wondering though about how people never raised any alarms when USA, and France and Britain, don't know which other countries did it, I am sure China did also... did all the nuclear tests in the pacific... all that radiation had to get somewhere... the radioactive elements I mean, as nature is not an isolated space... things from one side of the planned can end up on the other side1 point

As a photographer, I can say that for me, this image is not FLIR. Its is a Highly contrasted BW image, more like the result of a Light Intensifier Camera. And more than that. Trees dont have heat of their own like mammals, so they would be at the same temperature as the enviroment that surrounds it. And one last thing. If that wasnt enough, that Hummvee has a very uniform heat signature. In real life, the engine bay would be hotter that its body for example, unless of course you adjust "levels" squeezing out all the hightlights. This is FLIR Here you can even identify what vehicles are active, those which were recently used and those parked for an extended time.1 point

Great... but what about DELETING them as was requested? As far as I know there's no way to delete either mark points, flight plans, or entries in flight plans. You can change what a particular wp# in a flight plan points to, but I haven't seen any means of reducing the number of waypoints in a flight plan. Edit: I'm a liar, you can easily remove a waypoint from a flight plan by pressing the select key next to the waypoint entry (on the left side) and then pressing CLR on the CDU to delete it. You can overwrite it by entering a waypoint number into the scratchpad, and then pressing the select key. Note this removes it from the flight plan, but I'm still pretty sure you can't actually delete a waypoint, short of wiping the system entirely.1 point
