  1. Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, One of DCS's most powerful and often overlooked offerings is the User Files page. This supplies a wealth of free missions and campaigns, skins, documents, control profiles, and much more. Created by our very talented and dedicated community, User Files provides another dimension to your DCS experience that we hope you will explore. This week we share an update on the DCS: La-7 module brought to you by our third-party partners Octopus G. Please read the details below. Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics User Files Free Content From within the Downloads drop-down on the DCS website is a wealth of community-created content within User Files. All this content is free and includes single-player and multiplayer missions, campaigns, liveries, documents, device profiles, sounds, and many other types of free content that can expand and improve your DCS experience. This is a powerful resource for DCS players that guarantees endless gameplay and customization. Upon selecting User Files, you may filter content based on its Type, Localization, Map, Unit, Content Creator, and more. In addition to the mission content included with aircraft modules like interactive training missions, instant action missions, and missions, a wealth of free mission content is also available within User Files. Each entry will often include comments, screenshots, and other details to allow you to best find content that interests you. This can range from simple engagements to large-scale campaigns that include hundreds of active units. Many very talented mission and campaign creators offer thousands of missions and campaigns for your enjoyment. Although most aircraft modules include an offering of liveries spanning multiple squadrons and countries, we are limited to how much we can include to save hard disk space. User Files include over 13,000 skins across every player aircraft in DCS. If there is a particular livery you are looking for, there is a good chance that you will find it here. These are the two most popular categories of User Files, but there are other valuable offerings: Documents. There are over 1,100 documents that span aircraft tutorials, checklists, map and airfield diagrams, kneeboard templates, and much more. Device Profiles. We are living in a golden age of flight simulation peripherals, and although we include default mappings for many popular DCS aircraft, we cannot include them all. User Files includes 670 controller profiles across a wide range of peripheral manufacturers and aircraft. Sound. Like skins, DCS also allows you to replace default sounds with your own. User Files includes 364 sound offerings to cater to your audio needs. None of this would be possible without the outstanding support and dedication of the User Files contributors. Thank you! La-7 Development Report Recent development efforts have focused on fine-tuning the aircraft’s distinctive flight model that captures the potent climb and maneuverability that made the La-7 a fearsome World War II adversary. Work on the cockpit has advanced significantly, with an emphasis on historically accurate instruments and systems that reflect the era’s engineering intricacies. Octopus G has also continued to refine the La-7’s damage model for an authentic representation of its strengths and vulnerabilities in combat, while dedicating careful attention to external and internal artwork for a truly immersive experience. We appreciate your patience and enthusiasm as this team moves forward to release, and we look forward to making it available later this year. Stay tuned for further La-7 announcements. Thank you again for your passion and support, Yours sincerely,

  2. It would be nice to improve the USER FILES section, perhaps including the ability to be able to add an item as a favorite, and be notified for each new release/upload. Unfortunately, the system is outdated.

  4. I'd say the User Files section is hardly overlooked. And if you are praising how great community content is (which it is), you might wanna implement some basic features to the User Files section. E.g. adding the Iraq map to the filters (the map is out for 2.5 months now...) and let us see when the last file upload was, e.g. if a campaign from 2022 got an update since then. Sure, most creators write their changelog into the text section but why not make things simple to see at one glance while you are browsing? In a more unfriendly manner one could also say: it would be nice to put at least a little bit of new work into a feature before praising it in a newsletter ; )

  5. I'd like a keyword search feature for the User Files section. If one exists, I haven't been able to find it.

  6. More (working) tankers would be great, however I'd rather like to see some cold war tankers like the KC-10, KC-135 with "iron maiden"-hose, british Victor, Nimrod, VC-10 and so on.

  8. That's why I said "new work". Clearly, a lot of work has gone into this and it is a great enabler for modders. As to the constructive part: I did make 2 constructive suggestions of which you ignored one. Already someone else posted here that it feels outdated because it lacks basic features. And it was stated in other threads over and over again. Sorry, I am just a bit grumpy about the shortness of the newsletter. One is no news and the other one was already announced by Octopus G one or two weeks ago... Yet, zero news about the Afghanistan map update, no updates on continued work on any of the other modules released recently (Kola, Sinai, Phantom, ), no deep dive into the 2025 and Beyond video... But I do object to the claim that my post wasn't constructive!

  10. Indeed, some of the content available for free in the User Files section are top knotch. Through the Inferno sandbox, Retribution a la Falcon's campaign come to mind, and many more amazingly entertaining missions and what not, and all for free. And many are commercial grade.

  16. Just a question. You keep saying missile AIM 54 A should not perform that good against other fighters because...... the missile is old ? Is this the only basis upon which you build your argument? Because this is non sense. Apollo is an old program. And yet nobody else has landed on the moon so far. The Phoenix, as the tomcat, were way ahead of their time. Maybe they were even better actually than what is in DCS. So, as many people said before me, I recommand for you to bring evidence vs. real world data. But maybe you are just make a trick, to see how long this sterile discussion can go... If so, congrats, but not cool.

US airforce website claims that their AIM120A/B AMRAAMS have a range of about 20+ miles (arround 32+ km). The R77 was build as an answer to these missiles and beats their range. the normal R77 should have a range of about 50-80km. or should atleast outrange the Aim120 A/B. The users send you so many valid official (even american) sources and still you are denying the R77s advantage. I think that you should change that...

  28. What is it? This post is to serve as an introduction and primer for an upcoming set of mission packs I’m working on. There will be two mission packs released initially, one for the DCS Hornet and the other for the Heatblur F-14 Tomcat. Both mission packs are concurrent: they take place in the same air wing at the same time and place, in a fictional 1998 WWIII scenario. Some of the missions are technically the ‘same’ mission played from two different perspectives. Launch times may differ slightly, but in each you will hear some of the radio calls from the other. In some the mission objectives are the same, and different in others. Some of the numbered missions are unrelated, like an F-14 TARPS run on one cycle while the Hornet mission involves hunting enemy naval units in the Norwegian fjords. So on and so forth. There is one mission that ‘branches’ for the Hornets: depending on the outcome, you will play one of three missions as the next one. Of course, since these are mission packs and not campaigns, you can still play all the missions at any time, in any order you want. So the two ‘branching option’ missions that don’t apply can be considered bonus missions on any given playthrough. The two mission packs (one each for the Tomcat and Hornet) comprise ‘Phase I’ and are collectively named ‘The Battle of Vestfjord’. This is a Leyte Gulf style, large scale naval battle that takes place over about four days. It is heavy on air-to-air and anti-ship, blue-water naval combat operations. There is a LOT going on in the background of these missions, and the briefs are designed to immerse you in an even broader sense of a struggle for control over the GIUK gap and the north Atlantic. Weather is a factor in some missions, even the enemy itself in one of them. Phase I is almost complete and should be released sometime mid-to late February, or early March at the latest. The files will be in the user files section and I’ll have a mediafire link available as well when the time comes. All the missions are designed to be playable by the ‘casual’ player. I would characterize them as semi-realistic, not ‘ultra’ realistic. The units, liveries, etc do not necessarily conform to true historical norms, because this is an ‘alternate reality’ 1998 anyway, and in DCS ‘you use what you got.’ (More American and Soviet naval units, please!) Getting the highly prized ‘Mission Complete’ graphic and sound clip will require you to trap on the carrier. For missions at night and in bad weather, proficiency with the ICLS / ACLS systems and procedures is a must, but if you can’t do these things, you can still play the missions. Since it is not a campaign, you advance when you choose the next mission to play. All missions start hot either on the catapult, or in rare cases hot on the flight deck. You don’t have to start the engines each time, run those checklists, and wait for INS alignments, etc. It also eradicates 99% of the frustrating game-breakers that pop up every update with the deck crew on the supercarrier. If you are judicious with your fuel, AAR is not required, but is available for almost every mission for those who like to do it. My mission design philosophy revolves around finding the right mix between scripted events and player agency. I want the player in control of their destiny, not a participant in an interactive movie with a pre-determined outcome. As such, many of the missions are somewhat ‘open ended’ in terms of success and failure. As long as you make it back to the Boat (in most circumstances), it’s ‘Mission Complete’ and you can self-evaluate how you did. The missions all include custom briefing images, kneeboard cards, and AI-generated custom voice communications using a paid version of Naturalreaders TTS. I don’t like it as much as Speechify but it allows for a monthly rather than yearly subscription, and the product is workable at least. TTS files are then washed through Audacity to ‘radiofy’ them and convert them to .ogg files the game can use. The missions are set up so that even if you ignore the radios completely you will still hear most of what you need to hear to complete a mission. Again, it is all designed with the casual player in mind. There are still lots of opportunities to make calls using the F10 function (mostly for flavor and immersion) which prompt more custom communications, and in the Tomcat missions there is always some fun (and often humorous) banter back and forth between you and Jester. In addition, Jester is programmed to do some tasks for you when he should without needing to be prompted through the menu. At other times, you’ll need to ask for what you want. Right now, the list of missions for Phase I looks like this: For the Tomcat: BV 01 Opening Moves: Fleet defense scenario against a mass bomber raid backed by enemy fighter cover. BV 02 Sink the Moskva: Defeat land-based enemy air cover over a large-scale surface engagement. BV 03 Hide and Seek: Hunt the Bears that are hunting your battle group. BV 04 Action off Andoya: Air to air scrap during the mother of all surface battles. BV 05 Destroy the Mainstay: A high speed, high octane run at the well defended A-50 dogging your force. BV 06 Northern TARPS Run: Conduct a reconnaissance flight over two northern, enemy held airfields. For the Hornet: BVH 01 Opening Moves: Ready Launch to aid in fleet defense scenario against mass bomber raid. BVH 02 Sink the Moskva: Conduct a coordinated saturation missile attack on an enemy surface group BVH 03 Hide and Seek: Search for a second enemy force while the CVBG is under EMCON, and the Hawkeyes are down. BVH 04 Action off Andoya Participate in the largest naval battle since Leyte Gulf. Sink the Kirov if you can! BVH 05 Sinking Cripples Conduct mop-up ASUW strike against surviving enemy surface ships. BVH 05a (Branch 1) “Finish the Job” The Kirov is damaged but still afloat. Provide TARCAP while we remedy that. 05b (Branch 2) “Securing the Flank” Close Andoya air base ahead of schedule after a clean sweep at sea. BVH 06 Night Hunt Night hunt of smaller enemy surface units hiding in the fjords As of now all but the last two missions in each pack are completed, with only final polishing needed to prep them for release. Mission 6 for both platforms are still under construction. Modules required: DCS F-18 (for the Hornet missions) Heatblur F-14 (for the Tomcat missions) Supercarrier Kola Map User File Modules required: Military Aircraft Mod (for some of the missions) Phase II When I eventually get there, this will involve a USMC / NATO counter-invasion of Bodo and the retaking of northern Norway. That’s when the missions begin utilizing the Bombcat role for the Turkey, and the Hornet drivers will get their fill of close air support. In the background info (see next post), I’ve also hinted that this entire scenario could be a pre-cursor to a DCS recreation of the campaign in Janes F/A-18, although someone else is probably going to have to tackle that. There is also the potential here for other mission creators to take up the overarching theme of this story either in the Kola or other theaters. And now for the best part: It’s all Freeware, baby! None of this naval warfare goodness will cost you a dime, provided you already own the required modules. It’s all for the love of the hobby. If you fly both the Hornet and the Tomcat, you are in for a real treat. Flashpoint 1998 . . . In Russia, instability and economic distress have plagued the administration of Boris Yeltsin. Following the devaluation of the ruble and other economic downturns, residual communist hardliners have banded together with the military and carried out a military coup. Proclaiming the triumphant return of the Soviet State, the “New Soviet Union” almost immediately embarked on a campaign of aggression to restore former Soviet boundaries. Most notably, there were military incursions into the Baltic States, restoring them to New Soviet control almost without firing a shot. Emboldened by their success, they moved on to a swift invasion of Poland, attempting to seize the country before it could formally become a member of NATO. However, Poland had already signed the Accession Protocol for Poland to the North Atlantic Treaty, and given the suddenness of this aggression by the New Soviets, NATO decided to respond. Eager to seize early control of the North Atlantic and stem the flow of materiel from America to Europe, the New Soviets launched a devastating conventional missile strike on Keflavik, Iceland, rendering it temporarily inert. At the same time, NewSov forces mounted a rapid, Inchon-style amphibious and airborne invasion of Bodo, cutting off northern Norway from succor as additional NewSov forces invaded across the northern end of the Kola Peninsula. Under the blitz of the NewSov assault, Norwegian forces in the north of the country were overwhelmed and neutralized early, giving the New Soviets additional airbases from which to stage fighters, bombers, and maritime patrol aircraft. SOSUS nets were cut, and the North Atlantic thrown open to New Soviet submarine forces. The USS Kennedy carrier strike group in the Mediterranean fell under attack from mass Soviet bomber raids, and was destroyed. The USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group, transiting the Atlantic, almost suffered the same fate. Her group fared better, surviving the raids with major damage, and was forced to return to the east coast of the U.S. for extensive repairs, effectively knocked out of the war. Although defeated quickly, the Norwegians were able to get their licks in early. In concert with northern-deployed U.S. and British attack submarines, a large conventional cruise missile attack managed to catch and destroy most of the northern-deployed New Soviet bomber force on the ground, significantly reducing the threat to Atlantic-deployed naval forces. With one carrier sunk and another out of action, the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier battle group with Carrier Air Wing EIGHT has ventured into Arctic waters. Their objective is to break the New Soviet hold on Vestfjord and institute a ‘reverse blockade’, to aid the beleaguered Norwegians in pushing the enemy back out of their territory and re-instituting maritime superiority in the GIUK gap. Politically, the resurgent New Soviets are not without their own opposition at home. Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia have quickly banded together with native Russian elements who want democratic government restored. The news outlets have taken to calling them the ‘Blue Russians’, and the New Soviets the ‘Red Russians.’ However, for the time being, the New Soviets have firm control over the country and its military assets, and are waging a full scale military assault. NATO, in the meantime, has gone to DEFCON 3 and issued a statement that it will not be the first to use nuclear weapons in this conflict. The New Soviets have made the same assertion, but tensions are incredibly high as worldwide war is waged on the conventional front.

  33. The bobweight loading is completely absent, the force output is just a (fairly weak) linear spring response regardless of speed/g-load. Force by g-load is absolutely critical for a hydromechanically-controlled aircraft, and without it FFB is borderline pointless. The Moza software lets me approximate it and add it on top of the game's forces, but it'd be better for it to be implemented in the game itself. What does work: 1. Trim centering (though supplemental hardware trim is also needed if using Integrated mode) 2. Aileron spring stop There are no vibration effects like you get from the Heatblur modules, but that's OK with me. Aircraft vibrations don't really come through the stick anyway... it's just a compromise since not everyone has a seat shaker or similar.

Let me say it differently: "I've found two bug reports which are waiting for a fix: PPLI symbols on TAD only present for AI planes in multiplayer Human controlled F-18 & F-16 not visible on TAD & HMCS Is there anything else you'd like to report about the A-10C/A-10C II TAD?" I saw your links, but since the A-10C is not my cup of tea (it's even the opposite), I don't know much about it. Why am I here, then? In normal times, I wouldn't dare to answer threads about A-10C systems bugs, but my friend @Tarres asked me to take a look, which I did.

  41. That is not the problem. The problem is that the A-10C module comes with a pre-defined bind template specifically for the MFDs, and this template blocks out all other bind capabilities. No other functions are available to be bound and the UI reflects this by greying out binds that do not specifically match the button config. A “left” Cougar MFD can only ever be bound to left-MFD fuctions. A “right” Cougar MFD can only ever be bound to right-MFD functions. No other binds are available because the module hasn't defined them for these input devices. If, like many do after the Hornet and Mudhen came out, run with triple or quad MFDs, the A-10C module still only sees those as 2x Left MFD and 2x Right MFD, and all those extra buttons can't be used. This can be bodged by hard-modding the module and adding all other binds to the templates, but of course, this gets wiped by every update and require a mod manager to maintain (not to mention that if you're not careful, your “incorrect” binds will be wiped as well). This is a long-standing error in how the module has been made to match specific input hardware, but done in a uselessly restrictive way so that you are not allowed to use that special-supported hardware in any other way than what the module programmers imagined. It is actually pretty trivial to fix — just about every other module that detects and default-binds the MFDs can handle it just fine so it's already a solved problem. ED just needs to do it for the A-10C as well.

  43. I would say that all "they" would need do to bring it up to Korean War standards is to provide the ability for a mission builder to add a Tacan to the carrier. And provide a standard 1950's era gray paint scheme as well. I'm not sure whether this (the Tacan) is up to ED or M3.

We're both right, and there's room for both servers with and without stats to cater for each player type. Personally I'm not a fan and would now avoid a server that focuses on it's stats, but I understand why for others that might be the incentive.

And if DCS was to tell you, "Let's make the OH-6A a full module!" Would it be an easy task to convert it over? ...I'm guessing not. They should, though. While it's not the most useful combat aircraft (if you want to live), neither is the I-16, Yak-52 or the Christen Eagle II, and yet they're modules. But the OH-6A sure is fun, and cool. It IS an observation helicopter, after all...not a gunship! Somewhere else, I think YouTube, I commented that the flight model seems squirrely in yaw at the transition from forward flight to hover and at the point of skid touchdown. Well, I subsequently just made a fairly smooth transition and landing. With practice, it can be done. The lateral and longitudinal speeds seem to need to be zero when touching down, and then it's a calm landing. I've only got about 14 hrs flight time in it, with no training! ...and unlike other mods and modules, the OH-6A hasn't "killed" me yet! I rolled one over on the ground upon landing after I had one skid shot off by a KORD 12.7mm over hostile territory, but I survived, got out and walked the pilot figure 50 yards to the waiting Jeep on my airfield. ...and that was with it wobbling terribly by some other gunfire damage! Crew chief gave me a blue ribbon for at least bringing the cockpit instruments back salvageable.

  48. I don't understand how the fighter plane that served our highest-scoring USAAF ace is not in the game. The P-38 would fit the current ETO and future PTO maps, and the P-38J or P-38L would do the job nicely. However, the current I-16 and future La-7 will be in it without any relevant period map or WWII asset packs for the Soviet Union. This is the main reason I will not purchase those two modules; for me, it's a complete waste of my money. JMTCW......
