  1. Yes, but it also doesn't hurt realism simply not loading HARMs on 4/6 or simply not allowing it on a server, since the weapon behaviour is still the same when you only load on 3/7 which is realistic for the USAF, but also not for the HAF on the syria map. And we should keep it civil, the last 10 pages were sometimes not that polite. Long story short: It should be possible to forbid it, but also possible to allow it in some cases.
  2. The most weird thing is that you get a launch warning in an track-via-missile system which doesn't change its signature at all during tracking
  3. Oh boy, so much hate over an LAU-88 and a wire on stations 4+6.... Just make a server preset for having only USAF approved loadouts or allowing all loadouts ever possible. Removing the HARM's kills HAF loadouts which would allow 4 HARM's, 6 mavericks were allowed for "wartime". Having them kills realism on pure USAF loadouts, so just do a server preset. Enable the mission makers to chose between settings, forbid certain loadouts or allowing special ones.
  4. I bought the Viper for the exact reason I expected it to develop into a high fidelity module at the level near some other F16 sim. And it is the reason I have DCS. I found quite a few people coming the same way, knowing them from "other places" and meeting them here. There is quite a large base of people looking at high fidelity models. They came here for the A-10, then the Hornet and now the Viper. Viggen goes the same way. I'd be fine with unlocking arcade loadouts, but I want it as close as it gets. That's what I paid for, otherwise I wouldn't be here. Reasons differ for different people, and yours is as valid as mine.
  5. As a simulation, there shouldn't be any of those on stations 4 and 6.
  6. Well, I bought the viper... I'm rather new to DCS, so my impression may be off. I just get the impression that the viggen got a lot of love, although bugs remain, and the viper is getting small fixes, but no major progress currently. Q1 is a promise. F-16 is like "I don't know when, maybe next year or so". I'm not feeling like getting another module which is also in EA for years. I want to fly at least one plane. Maybe I'll think different when the F-16 is out of early access. Maybe.
  7. Thank you for not doing the "Viper mistake", starting lots of new stuff and never finishing anything. That is precisely why I bought the Viggen. And not the Hornet...
  8. I only can understand that it seems to apply the magnetic course to the gyro, and that chapter explains how it is done and what happens during the process. It seems to be similar to the F-16's inflight alignment when used in the air. I'm learning swedish and decided that once I can read viggen manuals, I can travel to sweden and use my language skills, because if I do, I'm certainly good enough in swedish to order some kanelbullar without being awkward
  9. It is only 3500ft long, which is about half the distance required for a viper... 6000ft / 1nm is considered safe with a 13° approach. 7500 is damn short for low visibility, crosswinds and a wet runway sometimes. I tried and my best approach was only one lost wing. That's an airfield designed around viggens and harriers. You can land a viggen there. In about half of the runway. You can even stop and take off again without changing direction if you are empty and have about 75% fuel left. Where did you find that challenge?
  10. Things you need to know about the Viper: - How TMS, DMS, CMS and comm switch work (target management, display management, countermeasures and radio) - How the two detents on the trigger work and that the first detent will trigger the laser - AOA and the correct flare on touchdown, aerobraking and how to touchdown with "crabbing" Those things are hard to find if you are starting with the F-16, but are the fundamentals of mastering the aircraft. For procedures, get the F-16 V5 manual, the MLU manual and the HAF F-16 manual- all three of them available to the public in a quick google search. And start flying MP with someone together. Mastering the plane is one thing, but a lot of procedures and the whole purpose of all that training is working together in a team. Also, if you are new to the plane, experienced flyers (there are plenty for the F-16) will help you to get started. If you know the viggen, we could do some kind of joint venture... You can learn every detail, but most prefer to get started with the plane before going deeper. Few go the other way around. Basically, switchology in the viper explained in a hurry: - TMS is the target management switch. Up locks targets, down drops targets. Left / right will cycle modes in most cases, most notably long right will change to TWS in A-A mode and is intended to cycle through targets (which doesn't work so nice right now in TWS). There are short presses and long presses doing different things in some modes. Like TMS right short in RWS will cycle a TTS target, while long goes to TWS. TMS left in A-A mode will do an IFF interrogation. - DMS is the data management switch and allows you to cycle through the three selected MFD pages in the lower middle OSB buttons on the left and right side (DMS left will cycle left MFD, DMS right will cycle right). You can map each preselection for each mode by pressing the middle down three OSB and calling any MFD page. DMS down will toggle SOI (sensor of interest), forgot what up does (man, muscle memory > real brain). Choose preselections wisely for each mode, and you won't have to mess around with those in action. - Dogfight override will switch into a combined AIM-9 / gun mode, keeping the original mode - Missile override will switch to A-A with slammers, keeping the original mode - Dogfight / MRM override cancel will return to the original mode selected before the override was active. This comes in handy when you drop bombs, have everything set up but have to scan the sky for bogeys from time to time (or dropped your bombs)- switch modes with the HOTAS, not with those buttons - CMS is the counter measure switch. Down and right will enable and disable the jammer some day or so, up drops the currently selected chaff / flare program - comm switch up: UHF transmit, down VHF transmit, right is Datalink transmit iirc (might be different on the link 16 in DCS) - Gun trigger has two detents, the first one will start recording and fire the laser in A/G TGP (lase 8 seconds before impact), auto lase is not there yet. Needless to say the second detent fires the gun - On landing, put the flight path marker (FPM) at the runway threshold, 2.5 to 3° glideslope, adjust AOA so that you get a green, maybe yellow indicator left of the HUD. Gently apply a little power and pull back to flare, touch down gently. Keep the nose 13° up after touchdown until ~90-100kts. When nose is down, apply wheelbrakes and nose wheel steering if necessary. - And don't forget to cycle through the coordinates and press "Enter" on longitude and latitude during a ramp start... - Pro tip: Map the TGP zoom to a stick axis and the pinky switch to any of those buttons which will switch between NORM and EXP. And map radar elevation to another axis.
  11. Yes! Please pin it, it is awesome! I'm just starting with the viggen (and swedish) so this is a great possibility to learn both. Struggling to get started, because I finished the training missions and feel like I just scratched the surface...
  12. You are doing nothing wrong, it just doesn't work at all at the current stage. TMS right in TWS is broken and will only cycle through some tracks, but not all of them most of the time. And TTS is not implemented yet.
  13. Afaik, it affects the funnel width in all modes, with or without a lock. Couldn't watch the video in my lunch time at work, thanks for the explanation about the 1-127 issue.
  14. There is only one setting for the wing span in the F-16.
  15. I'm learning swedish either way, so I subscribed
  16. I bought it in the winter sale, it was on sale back then. I must say that even if the viper is far from being finished, the level of detail in what is finished looks very promising. Bought the syria map (before the sale, instead of persian gulf) and the viggen now. The viper on the syria map is an absolute beauty. It's like the map is made for the viper, fits like a glove. That free to play time is a great thing. I already found some modules to purchase after I mastered the viggen
  17. Yes. It's simple once you understand how physics work Actually I was surprised how many rules-of-thumb exist, outperforming any complex math. Back then, I talked to real life pilots and they just went like "there is a rule of thumb we use and it's pretty close", one including putting a hand on the map and each open hand equals 1000lbs of fuel for that specific distance...
  18. That made my day. Awesome, man!
  19. I had to map first and second trigger detent and fire the laser manually, doing it that way ever since. I couldn't get the auto lase function to work yet.
  20. I did a performance calculator in C++ with a lift / drag / force per AOA, speed and altitude once. Came across a couple of tables for the viper, some guy converted some NASA wind channel data into a kinda nice lookup table. It is one hell of math. Nothing is linear, not even our atmosphere. While it was more of a practice for me, it showed me that there is a lot of "it depends". But... It was fun. One of the most interesting moments was when I realized that the sustained turn rate is the exact point on a specific AOA (caused by G and speed) when the P/S is 0. In other words, you need your whole energy for the turn. All this after spending weeks in formulas and tables. You can then move around that point- slower, and your AOA is the limit (the AOA that you can sustain without losing speed), faster and the G will be the limit (at least in the viper). The middle in between is the "corner speed", the sweet spot with the highest sustainable turn rate.
  21. https://info.publicintelligence.net/HAF-F16.pdf Page 1-46. The 129 has a dedicated overspeed shutoff valve. However, this does not protect you from air exceeding the speed of sound in the intake afaik, so it could still be damaged by that (like in a fast dive).
  22. Guess they can read minds. Or forums. Whatever.
  23. Just do a drop down menu so we can select between "easy", "sim" and "hardcore sim". It really does not matter that much. In the other sim, I do it on ingress and became used to it. I rarely carry mavs tho, I like GBU's as long as there is no SAM threat. No small arms fire, precise af. Doesn't matter if target is behind trees or dug in, moving or not. Can't pop helos with it tho, at least it is difficult. I'd see mav aligning as a nice to have for the hardcore guys like me, but there are far more important things right now. It should be on the end of the list.
  24. The HAF manual mentions an overspeed protection.
  25. Tbh I don't even know about it. I don't even know how to start with MP in DCS but I don't want to hijack this thread. Thank you for the cool input and nice discussion
