  1. I wonder if some of the issue here is the radar performance of AI aircraft. Since both the hornet and viper have had their radars recently rationalized to be more realistic, the AI with their simplified systems now seem to grossly overperform our jets. I find going against a MIG29S in the Viper to be very challenging now. The AI has always had perfect situational awareness, but now combined with better radar performance, it does make one feel at a disadvantage in the full fidelity modules. So if you’re playing primarily single player, maybe it’s the AI that needs fixing?
  2. I had the same problem - Nevada, Marianas and Normandy wouldn't authorize. I think it's because I reinstalled DCS onto a new (much larger) drive, and those 3 terrains used to be symlinked over to a different drive. With the new drive, I have room to have them all on the main drive, so I removed the symlinks and moved them over. Using the trick above worked - but one note for any "lurkers" who may try the same thing. Don't just drop the terrain folders into _downloads, you need them to be in the correct folder structure (mods/terrains/nevada) etc. This fixed it for me.
  3. Frederic is correct. The way around it, if you want ECM only, is to use TMS aft before you are locked up. This gives the ECM consent to transmit in advance, so when you are locked up it will automatically transmit without need for TMS aft. Then you just TMS aft when you want the chaff.
  4. And I have 20 years in the military, 10 (and counting) as a pilot. I can tell you we will exceed limits in a life or death situation. We will never plan to go out and do it repeatedly just to gain a tactical advantage. There’s also the aspect of training. I’m not doing something for the first time in combat that I’ve never trained for in real life. They (I don’t fly Hornets but have many friends who do) don’t know how the jet will react so they aren’t just going to do it willy nilly for the first time in a life or death situation, unless completely desperate. And when it’s on the line, they may not even think to do it. That’s why we train, to create muscle memory. If the muscle memory to pull it isn’t there, they’re unlikely to even think of doing it when they’re amped up and running on pure adrenalin. But we aren’t arguing whether people should over g, we are arguing what are the consequences. And you agree that repeated use of it would damage the airframe. The way many DCS players use it would definitely constitute repeated use. One or two? Let them get away with it. 4,5,6,10 times in the span of one fight? Something breaks. Because that’s realistic. And not all over G are the same. Your inspections you’ve done are probably lower numbers for very short durations. If a pilot exceeds a limit, depending on the limit and how long and by how much, the trip may be over. He flies home to be inspected. An intentional over G is likely going to be a much higher G value, for a much longer duration. Some DCS hornets pull 10-11G for several seconds when the paddle is pulled. Tell me you wouldn’t find significant damage with an exceedence over 40% of the limit for several seconds? Sorry for all the edits - every time I hit submit, I had another thought. The digital equivalent of storming back into the room over and over saying “And another thing!!”
  5. I never said you wouldn't pull it in a "pull the paddle or die" situation. I said you won't go into a fight planning to pull it, and hold it down for the entirety of the fight. People in DCS literally hold it down and use it on every turn in a dogfight. Do it once to save your ass, well the jet's down for inspection for awhile but will probably be fine. Hold it down an entire dogfight, you're damaging something. It's there for a reason, sure - emergency use only. Pull it once to save your life. Don't fight with it held down, it's not a 9G airplane despite what everyone wants to believe. Ask any real Hornet driver. Anyway, it's there and people will use it, so whatever. That they will do it is not realistic. Breaking the wings off isn't realistic either. But SOMETHING will break with repeated use - avionics, flight control surfaces, the gun. Things should start breaking if you abuse it, because they would in real life. The Tomcat has hit this balance very nicely - you over G or overspeed the flaps, things will break that will make your life more difficult, but your wings won't rip off unless you REALLY pull on it.
  6. Thanks for the replies guys. I'm tempted to say the GUI ports are a red herring - I'm running my first instance on 8088, and my second instance on 8089, so there should not be a conflict here. I've posted the autoexec file from my second instance. Interestingly, my first instance doesn't have an autoexec file - presumably it's going with the default of 8088. I'll try creating one and forcing 8088 to be sure, but I've never had a problem with the Web UI connecting to instance 1 on 8088 and instance 2 on 8089, they've always connected correctly. autoexec.cfg I think the issue is with the second line, with the inability to open the mission file from the temp folder. I'll dig around in the antivirus, but if it was excluded from the AV, it would have this error every time, no? The server starts fine the first time, it only seems to error when it's already running and I try to switch the mission or restart the running mission. Strange... Edit: So I just examined the log for a successful startup of the server, and the mention of the GUI ports is still there. What is not there is the error regarding finding the specified path, so I do believe it's related to this.
  7. Luckily it was extremely short duration…
  8. It is a great video! Over my Xmas break I spent a lot of time on the dogfight servers. We cancelled all our holiday travel plans last minute so I had nothing else to do lol. I’ve noticed fewer folks using the paddle than I think there used to be. I’d say most do use it only occasionally, and the odd one flies around with it held the entire time. I don’t pull it either, and know a few guys who don’t. They’re out there
  9. That’s not true according to Gonky. I apologize that I don’t have a better time stamp for where exactly he speaks about it, but IIRC it’s in the first third of the video. He says he used to think that the wing fold was the only difference too, but since he’s started working at Boeing, he has learned it is a completely different wing with structural reinforcement throughout the jet. I’ll look for the spot if I get a chance and update the post with a timestamp. (Edit: starts at 18:30)
  10. To each their own, I used to get fired up at people using the paddle in BFM, but now I've just decided to let them play the way they want. I'll make fun of them for it, especially if I am beating them without using it, but I don't get fired up anymore. I don't understand why people flock to DCS for it's realism, then choose to fly in an unrealistic manner, but again - to each their own... I would like to see failures like Heatblur has implemented - Gonky once said something about the gun possibly being something that might break first (that would be a significant factor in BFM ), or maybe failed control surfaces, etc. I can't claim to know where the weak points of the jet are, but I have no doubt that something would break with repeated pulls of 9G+... You might get away with one or two.
  11. Mklink is the same as a symbolic link. I’m glad it worked! For anyone else lurking here, there is a great article on how to do this: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/ I personally use the link shell extension that’s shown later in the article. Works great and is very easy!
  12. G'day all, I've been having this issue for awhile now (probably a year?). I have 2 servers running on one dedicated server install, using separate saved games folders. For the second instance only, the first mission opens just fine when starting the server, however when I go hit restart in the UI or hit run on a different mission, I get the "error starting server" message. It doesn't happen all the time, but typically seems to happen after the server has had a client online and the mission was running. IE, I'll go on, play for a bit, log off, then go into the UI to restart the mission back to it's start state, or run a different mission. Once this has happened, the only way to get it going again is to force close then restart the server instance. In the spoiler is what I believe to be the relevant portion of the log file, and I've included the whole log file for reference. It seems to me to be some kind of permissions issue (cannot decompress mission, failed to open). I've tried running as administrator, forcing permission through windows, etc. Originally I had been using one common folder within the first instance's mission folder and pointing the UI to those missions, but I changed that to a common folder that's not within either instance's saved games to see if that helped - it didn't. I'm kind of at a loss now as to what to try next. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers! dcs.log
  13. Yup, windows 10. I agree, Win 10 is very finicky with networking. I honestly can’t recall exactly what hoops I had to go through, but ensure you have enabled network discovery and set the network to a home network on all your systems. Then, ideally, when you go to “network” on your PC, they should all show up. If they are all logged into the same windows account, that will help immensely too. Otherwise you may need to go in and individually grant network permissions, and you may need to anyway. Once all this gets sorted out, you can map the saved games folder on the server as a network drive on your main pc. Then you can use a symbolic link to create a shortcut to that folder in your main pc saved games folder. if you’re not sure how to do any of these, try googling for tutorials. If you use my exact wording (create symbolic link, map network drive) you’ll find great info. Good Luck!
  14. I do this regularly using symbolic links. I have my gaming PC and my server PC. The server system only has the dedicated server version installed, so when I want to edit the missions that server runs I do it with my main PC. Map the network drive, then create a symbolic link within your main DCS saved games / missions folder that points to the destination on your mapped drive. I’ve even managed to link a google drive sync folder within the saved games folder for my server, so with the user name and password, all the guys in my group can run any mission they want on my server remotely. Upload it to the google drive, then log in remotely to the web UI and run the mission from the synced folder.
  15. Ya know what would be REALLY cool, and next level? If I'm 2 ship, or 4 ship, with other Tomcats - Let's start with other player flown aircraft, but maybe AI could eventually do it to - what if Jester took control of the fight? He coordinates with the RIOs of the other aircraft on sorting, target priority, etc. It could start out simple - you've got a 2 ship, you're on the left, he states "sort left/right" and automatically takes the left, and Jester in the other aircraft takes the right. They could also ensure you're both not targeting the same aircraft. I don't know if this is in the realm of the possible given DCS limitations, but wouldn't that be cool? Multiple Jesters coordinating with each other (as they would IRL)...
  16. I’d love to see those boundaries to the map, but that would be huge. It’s 1200km from Kabul to the gulf, by comparison the PG map is 800km from the eastern portion of the detailed area (tip of Oman) to Kuwait, and Kuwait is not even included in the detailed area. There’s only about 500km of detail in PG, and that’s the largest map so far. I do think it’s possible, and would hope to see, a detailed area from the Kabul area (maybe up to the Hindu Kush) to Kandahar, ending maybe at the Registan desert in the south. It could then be a low detail area down to the coast to allow for those missions off the boat. Better be proficient with AAR though, that’ll be a long flight!
  17. This only seems to work if you come out of PRE mode first (switch mavs to VIS mode). If you stay in PRE mode, you can't get the HMCS to "activate" for markpoints.
  18. Serious about what? We’ve already identified I was wrong and that’s an FW190.
  19. It’ll come
  20. Possibly, but all I’m trying to say is the teaser video is just that - a teaser. They’ll release a much more detailed roadmap in a couple weeks that will provide much more info on the things teased today, and cover things that weren’t (like performance improvements). I am waiting for those improvements as eagerly as anyone else! For reference, here is last year’s news, released in early January: https://forums.eagle.ru/topic/254461-official-news-2021/?do=findComment&comment=4532354
  21. From todays video, it looks like Bagram will likely be the focal point of the map, likely as Far East as Jalalabad and maybe Peshawar. I do hope it goes far enough south to include Kandahar. Whether you play out 80s scenarios or modern scenarios, Kandahar was pivotal in both conflicts. The corridor between Bagram and Kandahar for a couple hundred kilometres either side will make an excellent area for ops. If they want to go as far as the Hindu Kush though, this will make for a huge map. It would be nice to see Helmand province included as well, but that may be too big…
  22. It’s hard to showcase that kind of stuff in a trailer video. They usually release a new text roadmap a week or two after this video, so watch that space for updates I think.
  23. I thought the cockpit looked a little wrong. Thanks for point that out, too bad.
  24. Mitsubishi Zero. AI I assume, probably linked to the WWII version of the Marianas.
  25. Ok, so a workaround: the second time creating the mark point, use the dobber seq to cycle through HUD, TGP, and the other sources, back to HUD. Then you’ll be able to create a second markpoint. It seems to be related to the (not a) bug in this video, where I got the workaround from.
