  1. you got a source on that? (not tryin' to be snarky, just interested in further reading)
  2. @OP, just look down at the dial and back up... it's not that hard, but it does take practice to develop the muscle memory to look right back at where you were (so you don't lost track of your bogey). You're just too used to having it on your JHMCS... <shots fired> :) That said, when I RIO'd in the Fight for Honor tournament, i definitely called out air speed and altitude as needed... no idea what a real RIO would do, and personally, I'd rather Jester just do what a real RIO would do. "You're goin' ballistic mav, go get him!"
  3. challege accepted... can't wait to try it tonight! I'm thinking it should result in compressor stall and much engine damage... flameout if nothing else...
  4. yep this... you can bind the single chaff and flare buttons from the RIO to the pilot. For now... at least.
  5. flap drag... please reduce the flap drag... turn fights are painful
  6. not trying to be snarky, but you do know it takes like 5 seconds for the RWR audio warning to stop after the missile stops tracking, right? Or does the warning persist even beyond that?
  7. This. The 14 is much more challenging to fly at the edge of its flight envelope where it starts to compete with the 16 in terms of turn rate. If you really want to be competitive with the 14 in a turn fight, you're going to have to practice a bunch. With the 16, you just pull the stick back and watch your air speed... same with the 18... not as much feel or effort required. Even real pilots kinda said the same thing, which is neat that we can experience that in DCS. IRL, tomcat pilots never really flew the 14 to the edge of its envelope. I've read that the airframe was 10g rated, but that doesn't mean she liked it there. I also have it on pretty good authority that when BFM training against F-18C's, they kept the 14 under 7g, which may explain why so many pilots felt like the 14 was a dog in a turn fight... <shrug> After flying the 14 exclusively the last 8 months, i hopped in the 18 to try out TWS last week... she feels like she's flying through mud. Very odd feeling... I don't like it at all... feels very under-powered in a turn fight... but i digress.
  8. Excellent write up. I appreciate it, since I'm stuck at work, especially the part about the flight model. Very well done, sir!
  9. This... 100% this... so much... while I'm just sitting over here wishing ED would ACTUALLY look at the data presented to them about drag and all the missiles since the "missile mod" team did a crap load of research 3-4 years ago. They completely ignored all of it... I just want reasonably accurate modeling of the missile external balistics. I'm really hoping the new missile API improves the logic behind both the physics and guidance for the 120 and R-27's as well as the rest.
  10. 100% agree... I'm really saddened that the DCS F-16 wont be able to fire AIM-7's for this very reason...
  11. you could shoot a phoenix straight up, or even an ER from 40k ft... then hit F6... you'll get out of the atmosphere, until it de-renders. :)
  12. what aircraft are you trying to lock?
  13. 100% this... if you've ever tried to get those things on while doing anything else, 100% this. @op Also, you could just make it part of your start up procedure to put them on your helmet... instead of requesting the devs do that for you...
  14. agreed! Thank you for the clarification!
  15. FPS-wise, i see no noticeable difference between the 14 and 18. The big difference I see between the tomcat and hornet is the amount of memory. The 14 loves it some memory... those big juicy textures are so damned good, but they love some RAM.
  16. There's no credit for works in progress. Welcome to the internet. When DCS can replace SRS, feature-wise, I'll care about DCS voice comms... but for now, I wont be bothered to set it up... especeially when Discord works, SRS works... I'm actually kind of confused as to why they're (ED) expanding their footprint into this area when there are such well fleshed out options already there. Is this some kind of prep for the long delayed MAC or FC4?
  17. patience... either they'll update the change log, or HB is out of sync and will have to add their changes to the next update. With the irregularity of the ED updates, this is to be expected.
  18. I'd be surprised if ED models pylons breaking due to over-g... they don't even model the F-18 wings breaking at 30g. WIP i know, i know... and in sincerely hope they do a better job modeling stores and pylons in the near future.
  19. To echo, Beamscanner, you add a humongous amount to the discussions on this forum, and I am grateful you do, however, in this case, you seem to be assuming the logic behind the DCS simulation of RWR and lock warnings is a simple function of signal intensity, when there is likely a lot more to the simulation... or at least there could be more to it than just that. Furthermore, it may differ depending on the aircraft being bugged. The Su-27 may yield a lock warning, while the F-18 may not. Thanks for this discussion... i've learned a great deal so far.
  20. Thanks for the explanation... i get it now :)
  21. +/- 100? My Vc was around 350+ kts in my video... i think you may be confusing two different filters. Notch != Doppler filter... again, i'm no pilot, so i would love a better explanation if i'm totally wrong :)
  22. I'd love to be able to tell jester the beam width and scan bars... ;) (my video was done on MP server, so i have to rely on tracks showing up on the TID) I've tried this in TWS too, and never get tracks no matter my approach angle... i'll test some more tonight as a RIO. So... how big is the notch angle / filter? Because those helis' flight path couldn't have been more than 60-70 degrees off mine, and there were 16 of them spread across the horizon (meaning their relative aspect angles varied greatly) and not one showed as a track at any point in time... and an MI-8 is not a small aircraft (they should reflect tons of radar energy) pls nerf stealth helicopters, kthx :P j/k
  23. Here's a video: you can see a bunch of helos at 1600 ft, and i never get them on radar, despite closing speed being much greater than 200 kts
