Thanks very much, yes that does help. The only thing I am still unclear about is the Reload button. Why does that light up? It reloads the last saved version of the profile, doesn't it? Should I always reload it when it is lit, or should I ignore it? Should I Finish before I Reload or will that lose the changes being finished? Edit: yes, sorry, by preference window I meant configuration window.

I get this quite a bit. Just to clarify, what is the right procedure? Hit Reload and then Finish, and then paste in the profile? Hit Finish and paste in the profile, and then come back and hit reload? Ignore Reload altogether and just Finish + paste? Something else? Thanks for any guidance. Also, when I hit Finish and close the preference window before I go to paste, the clipboard seems empty, but it seems to work if I leave the preference window open.

Operation Pontus - upcoming dynamic DLC campaign for F/A-18C
wowbagger replied to baltic_dragon's topic in Baltic Dragon
Yes, this is a reservation I have too. I am totally bored with the Caucasus. I know it's very tempting for mission designers to appeal to the biggest audience because everyone has this map, but it has been around since Flanker days.We have these lovely new maps which I fear will continue to go mostly unused. I bought Raven One, even though I really don't like the Hornet, partially to support BD and specifically to reward someone for making a non-Caucasus campaign. The newer maps also seem somewhat more believable for much of the DCS planeset. -
Personally, I don't find anything hardcore about pushing the same sequence of buttons over and over again. I'd rather get to the part where I actually have to think more quickly. But there was already a long, unhelpful, and eventually pointless thread on this topic not long enough ago - which was of course closed down. You can check it out for this discussion.

One thing about DCS is that people most often recommend modules just based on the aircraft itself. While the F5 and Mig-21 are very fun to fly, there is so little single player content for them I find them hard to recommend. At the other end of things, there is a quite a bit of content for the F-18 and there will likely be more and more, but it is my least enjoyable plane to fly - it feels sterile and numb and you just let the plane fly while staring a video screens the whole time. I originally got the Hornet on sale only because I knew it would likely have the most content created for it eventually (apart from maybe the A-10) but I already kind of regret it, it's just not my thing. There is good content in terms of campaigns for the A-10, Mirage, Huey, Mi-8, F-18. The F-5 has a couple of campaigns, but I think they are more like robust practice missions rather than a story driven narrative. The Harrier has essentially nothing - because many systems were incomplete or not working as intended for so long, campaign makers have stayed clear of it, however with RAZBAM's renewed vigor for getting it into a state which justifies the 'release' status label, hopefully that will change soon. The F-14 has almost nothing, but again hopefully Heatblur will make good on their promise someday and release at least the campaign for the B (and then the A, once that is finished) - their modules are fantastic, but they are very sluggish to provide the campaigns that come with them. The Viggen has a couple of good campaigns and is very fun to fly, but is very narrow in mission scope, and one of the most difficult to reconcile being in the theatres of operation that DCS offers. Syria is by far the best map. But there is no content for it yet, and it takes a looooooong time to get any made for new maps. One of the big problems with DCS is that because the Caucasus map is free, campaign makers focus on it since they know everyone has it and it offers the biggest potential audience. Nevada is next, but all the campaigns there will obviously be about training. The first Persian Gulf campaign (for the F-18 ) just came out in August. Last year's update to Normandy turned it into a top notch map, but I don't fly DCS WWII stuff, so I have no idea about it. It is an awesome map for helicopters but you would have to make any missions yourself, since there is nothing at all for it. For me, the most fun planes to fly are the F-14, Mig-21 and Huey. Mirage is very easy to learn and has two of the best campaigns (one in Georgia and one in Nevada). I haven't touched it in a year since RAZBAM was redoing a bunch of systems and broke some training and missions. I think Baltic Dragon has likely fixed everything so it is working again, but I'm not sure if the manual is updated and how many more things RAZBAM is still going to change (RAZBAM modules been a bit of a crap shoot in my experience in terms of what bits have been working when, but they have the best DCS campaign creator on contract so it can be worth the trouble). There is no easy answer. Get whatever plane grabs your interest but be prepared to make your own missions. Check out Liberation in the missions sub-forum. It's a little unusual but a wonderful way to put DCS modules to use.

Yes, long, long time fan. But I'm just now in the middle of And Another Thing for the first time. Bowerick gets a surprisingly large part in this one.

Awesome! That seems to have solved the issue. Log now looks like : And no extra folder was created. Thank you so very much. That was driving me spare. I hugely appreciate your help with this. Cheers

Okay, internet access returned. Here's the startup log:

Hey, thanks for the fast response! I was in the middle of attaching my Vaicom startup log when my internet connection went down (on mobile now). In any case, the log mentions the install directory, and both the DCS directory and the DCS.openbeta directory. Is there a registry entry I can change/remove to focus Vaicom on only the openbeta one?
-
My Vaicom always writes to both a DCS directory and a DCS.openbeta directory in the Saved Games directory. Is this normal behaviour? Is there anyway to stop it doing so? I only run the open beta branch so I don't need Vaicom creating a DCS directory every time it runs. The main problem is that Simshaker for Aviators looks for a DCS directory in the saved games directory and uses that by default. Only if there is no DCS directory does it then look for and use the DCS.openbeta directory. So I would like to have Vaicom stop pointlessly creating the DCS directory if possible. Thanks for any help with this.

Excellent. Thanks for the speedy fixes.

Wow, thanks for looking at this with such detail Flappie. Much appreciated. Unfortunately, I'm more than a bit out of my depth here and haven't any idea what the "PlaneSounder" class is or what it's related to. :(

I have had three CTDs after being hit by incoming missiles in the past couple of days. Each time the log file seems to indicate something's up with a sound file : F14_PILOT_COCKPIT:foley/damage_impact or F14_PILOT_COCKPIT:foley/damage_missileimpact. 2020-10-22 16:02:51.987 DEBUG Scripting: AWACSCallsign:make 2020-10-22 16:02:51.987 DEBUG Scripting: Phrases make : key = 2 2020-10-22 16:02:51.987 DEBUG Scripting: Phrases make : key = 4357 2020-10-22 16:02:55.068 DEBUG Scripting: Phrases make : key = 4258 2020-10-22 16:03:04.862 ERROR SOUND: invalid source_params(F14_PILOT_COCKPIT:foley/damage_impact): gain 2020-10-22 16:03:04.864 ERROR SOUND: invalid source_params(F14_PILOT_COCKPIT:foley/damage_missileimpact): gain 2020-10-22 16:03:08.091 INFO EDCORE: signal caught: 'Abnormal termination' 2020-10-22 16:03:08.093 INFO EDCORE: try to write dump information Any ideas on this one?

It's harder to read. It feels like twice as much clicking and scrolling to get the same information as before. Some utility is simply gone. Change is fine; but there is change for the good, and change for the worse. This was a horrible decision from the user's point of view, in my opinion, whatever the real reason for doing it is. The sole good thing about this change is that it will free up some of my time since I don't see myself spending much, if any, time here after this deeply disappointing new look.

+1 Do not like.

Nice work around, good idea. Thanks. Actually I do use something similar with my mouse. One of the buttons on my mouse toggles TrackIR on/off, another switches between mouse pointer and mouse view control. Then I use the mouse to look around in the same way you use the trim hat. Like you said it isn't ideal at all. But it works. I might try to come up with a macro that pauses track IR and switches mouse control with a single button press and reverts back to normal when you let go of the button. I think there are enough Track IR users to warrant ED looking at some kind of adjustable bias system as skypickle suggested - simply move the center point according to how far you look in that direction with a slider to adjust how much offset should occur. That would solve the problem. What are the percentages of TrackIR users vs VR users I wonder?

Default view different to zoom centre view in many modules
wowbagger replied to imacken's topic in View and Spotting Bugs
I have this in all my modules I think. I always have to hit 'normal zoom' at mission start to get the proper field of view. -
No, it's simply how the two systems work together. The Scorpion will always be in the centre of the display, and the Track IR works by turning your head (ie, away from centre). So there will always be the weird sensation of turning your head one way and your eyes the other. My axes work well and are comfortable for every other aspect of flight simming. Trying to adjust to minimize this would make them far too sensitive for normal use, I suspect. The problem isn't as evident in the Hornet/Viper/Blackshark because I tend to be looking at smaller angles from centre with those, minimizing the problem.
-
Or what do I need the new one for? (It's rhetorical, by the way.) I'm not complaining about the II. Just not sure I needed the new toys.... yet. But it took me eight years to start enjoying the Hog at all. It'll likely change.
-
Yep, I'm struggling with the Scorpion + Track IR too. I never noticed the issue with Viper/Hornet, but with the Scorpion, at high angle of head yaw, I have to turn my head one way and and my eyes in the opposite direction to keep the Scorpion pointed at the right spot and actually look at it myself - rather unnatural and uncomfortable. I find things more comfortable with A-10C to be honest. But then I really don't even enjoy using the Tpod that much. Maybe I'm more of an A-10A kind of person. Feels like too many of the DCS birds are just Tpod bomb transports. I kind of prefer old school I guess.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned already, but I noticed that some of the dials will just spin ad infinitum without ever hitting a stop. I saw this behaviour with the UK DÄMPNING (RWR audio volume) knob, PANEL BEL (Panel lights), and INSTR BEL (Instrument lights) knobs. Cheers

Has anyone replaced the battery in their UTC Mk II? I fear mine is on the way out since, after some years, it has started to not hold its charge as long as usual. If anyone has a link for a replacement battery that can be ordered I would be grateful. I love my UTC and I hate the idea of it dying and not being able to order a replacement anymore. Cheers
