I find most of the modules don't give enough (barely any) feedback of this sort. They feel far smoother and less affected by aerodynamic forces than even any jumbo jet I've ever been on. It's one of the things that sets the Tomcat apart from say... the Hornet. And I love this feedback. It feels much more like I'm in a real aircraft instead of just managing some video screens in a tiny office with too many beeps and bings.

Actually, I had that with the Tomcat for a brief while; whenever I got hit by an enemy missile my DCS would CTD. Definitely helped to focus the attention. Thought it was an enhanced realism feature, but apparently it was just a bug.

Awesome. Thanks much for the update. Time to relearn the Warthog ...again. -
A10C-II HUD Brightness fix... IC Safe
wowbagger replied to Taz1004's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
This is soooo very true. Can't understand why there isn't a more rigidly enforced standardization for things that all modules share. Recently, when asked why their module didn't recognize the show pilot in cockpit options setting, the Community Manager for that developer responded with "Well we dont make the other modules, were a different 3rd Party Developer trying different things all the time and experimenting with new features." I couldn't believe they were actually serious. -
For me the nights are too dark, pitch black, without enough ambient light. If you switch on any kind of NVG many of the aircraft have non-dimmable indicator lights somewhere that cause a blinding distraction while NVGs are activated. Plus, helos can be very difficult to navigate at night, constantly having to switch NVG on/off to check instruments but also avoid crashing into trees etc. It's doable, but flying by yourself, it feels neither realistic, nor fun - at least for me. I have no doubt that others feel completely differently.

Frankly, anyone who regularly flies their Warthog, Tomcat, Gazelle, Sabre, Viper, Mirage, Harrier, Aviojet, or Viggen around the Caucasus, or indeed flies their Blackshark anywhere, should not be overly concerned about the suspension of disbelief needed for using "live" fire in a DCS training environment. I'm not. But I am definitely looking forwards to this campaign! Can't wait. Happy New Year all!

A10C-II HUD Brightness fix... IC Safe
wowbagger replied to Taz1004's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Nice work! The yellowish tint is there by design - I think it's an electro-magentic coating to try to reduce radar reflections from the canopy area. But I have always found it really distracting in game. Granted it seems less noticeable in the II than in the I, at least to me. I have never liked the A-10 HUD. It always feels too small and misaligned for a proper head position (my opinion). Your changes though definitely look great in the screen shots. -
I've been playing the Georgian War by changing the player's flight from F15s to Vipers. It's been great fun (I never played it in the Eagle), and it's a good way to get introduced to the F-16. I have also done the same changes the entire Mirage base campaign - but I've only played 2 missions of that. Works well (just note down the radio frequencies when saving the new missions). If you have the Syria map, it plus Liberation together feel like they are made for the Viper.

I personally think the Gazelle would be great as a two person coop module, but it isn't greatly optimized for the realities of single pilot combat. The auto-hover is incredibly picky about engaging and there is no indication for the auto modes unless you have the big red controls indicator open. It also needs an automated pop-up button that would help significantly with weapons employment. The second thing is that the campaign has great voice acting, but most of the missions are in the middle of the night. Navigating and fighting in the Gazelle in pitch black is not fun for me given DCSs current night lighting. I actually changed all the missions in the editor and am now flying it at dawn/dusk conditions, and in the Ka-50. And I'm really having fun with the campaign. After changing the axes inputs and learning to use the autopilot button (whatever it is called on the stick) I enjoy flying the Gazelle, but not fighting in it. (That reminds me - the nomenclature for some of controls is quite confusing and hard to figure which one relates to which button/function. It could use some more clarity.)

Maybe, but it's worth remembering that the Forrestal is only part of a module, which has/will offer up multiple versions of an aircraft and which has things no other module currently has (multicrew AI, working multicrew), all for basically the same price as the others. If it were a paid module/addon, then I could concede your point. However ...

Nice work! Matches with my experience as well after checking it today.

You can mouse click to hide the Hornet stick, but must use keybinds for the Tomcat. I'd love for this kind of thing to be standardized across all aircraft - not just ED's birds, but everything in DCS.

I tested it last week and I'm pretty sure the ADF volume switch still does nothing. I'll have another look again just to be sure.

Oh, I was under the impression that it was a known issue and that everyone was suffering from the stutter - which lead me to believe that the new DM simply wasn't ready for release. For me it is game breaking. If that's not the case, then it changes things for sure. There had been a number of threads talking about it, but they don't seem to have survived the forum changeover for some reason. Thanks for your reply. It's good to have others feedback about the actual game, rather than the tired "you're wrong, you're the problem, get good" argumentum ad hominem which are all too common on this forum. Cheers
-
Yes, agreed. I'm not complaining about using the open beta to find the bugs (and not looking for anyone's opinion on what I should do). But I'm under the impression that there is already a pretty good idea about loading the damage graphics causing the stutter. If they need more people to keep playing and submitting posts about it, that's fine. And if there is something new they want to try with the next patch, that's great too. I've always been happy to help by posting whatever bugs I find in DCS. But if the DM now needs to be tweaked and baked for some more months before the developers are ready to patch it again, it makes more sense to me to make the game playable. I've stopped playing warbirds because of the stutter. Players switching to jets or other WWII options doesn't add to the knowledge base either. Hopefully a solution to the stutter won't be too hard in solving or too long in coming.
-
Because that doesn't solve anything or help anyone. Is there an advantage to leaving the warbirds in its stuttery state? Why is any comment on the open.beta (which frankly is not really a beta) always met with "switch to stable, beta is clearly not for you"? Hopefully the Tomcat will have fixes and a campaign on the 16th - should I miss out on those too? I'm not criticizing the developers nor complaining, just suggesting an interim solution to make warbirds flyable again until the new DM is working well. Did this bug show up in multiplayer testing? Are YOU enjoying the current state? Sorry if that comes across as petulant, but I find your reply neither constructive nor particularly genial.
-
If we don't have a fix for the new DM stutter ready to go for the Dec 16th patch, can we roll back to the previous DM please? I'm all for giving the developers the time needed to implement the new damage model and I appreciate any improvements to the game, but I would prefer that we recognize that it isn't working at the moment and have a game that is playable in the interim. I generally like the new monthly patch cycle, and the more deliberate and comprehensive approach to bug squashing and improvements it allows, however when a game breaking bug is introduced, I think we should be more amenable to a quick patch which rolls back to a working condition rather than wait for weeks for another patch which may or may not solve the problem. After all, we players have purchased the game more to play it than to develop it. Cheers

The Enemy Within 3.0 and Warthog II
wowbagger replied to baltic_dragon's topic in A-10C The Enemy Within Campaign 3.0
Just a quick question about the state of the A-10C II module. Is it in a completed enough / bug -free condition to enjoy TEW3 or should I wait some months more in order to play through frustration free? Thanks for any input. Cheers -
Well spent.
-
Ah, good stuff. It has been a while since I played that, and I don't think I ever knew that option was there. Cheers

The Caucasus map acts as a stand in for the Korean peninsula. I would advise not getting too hung up on the wrong map - if you discount the warbirds, and Syria (for which there are almost no missions and zero campaigns available) the percentage of aircraft in DCS which don't have a temporally/geographically appropriate map is alarmingly high. When you factor in the number of actual quality campaigns available (hint- not a lot) ... well, using your imagination to turn this: ... into ... ... is a pretty small sacrifice to make. Museum Relic is set in fictional countries using the same map as Hunters over Yalu. Two countries are going to war in modern-ish day and your restored 50's jet is called into service to aid the war effort. So yes, it is a military campaign, but employs even more imagination to accept the setting. Edit: Try out Hunters over the Yalu for free. And check out youtube for run throughs of both campaigns. In my opinion, for the money (especially on sale right now) both campaigns are definitely worth picking up. Hunters is better if you want 50s Sabre - Mig action, and is a really fantastic romp through the Korean War. A proper Korean War campaign for DCS was a looooooong time incoming and Reflected did it right. Hoping he'll continue with a MiG-15 campaign after the Jug and Tomcat ones are done and dusted.

Brilliant, thank you!

Android mobile - same annoying experience. I'm sure anyone who uses tapatalk will know they can do it with dcs forums. Please remove the code which triggers the reminder!

There are two: The Museum Relic and F-86F Hunters over the Yalu If you are referring to Hunters over the Yalu, check out the info thread - I just started the campaign last week, so far it's great. It has a ton of atmosphere and so far seems straightforward without being boring/repetitive. It is well crafted with lots of little extras beyond fly there, shoot that which make it totally come alive. The creator is very active - constantly updating and improving his campaigns - and extremely responsive to questions and problems. I fully recommend grabbing it and enjoying some Korean War action. The Museum Relic is also quite good. It takes an imaginative approach to flying the Sabre/Mig-15 in a modern setting. It has a wide variety of missions. It has been a long while since I played that campaign (using the Mig) but if I recall accurately, you needed to fulfill the mission objectives to progress in the campaign. I could be wrong about that.
