The 62nd Virtual Fighter Squadron has formed, and membership is open to all DCS pilots! The squadron is geared for those who would like be part of a squadron, but due to real life obligations, limited amounts of time to fly, busy work schedules, and family life, may not be able to join a squadron with a more specific focus or training requirements. We welcome DCS pilots of all skill levels on any aircraft, no matter how often you are able to fly. There's no commitment to join, nor any mandatory training in order to become a member of the 62nd. We offer a squadron for you to call home, meet and fly with fellow DCS pilots, and most of all, have fun! Our squadron also features a 24/7 private server on which to fly and is open to all wingmen and members of the 62nd VFS. We've also recently introduced squadron liveries for popular aircraft, available to all members. While we are not specifically a training squadron, several of our members have graciously stepped up and are willing to assist DCS pilots who are new to an aircraft or are learning tactics and advanced techniques. Twice a month we hold training sessions covering both combat and non-combat subjects. As Commander of the 62nd VFS, I offer my invitation to join our squadron, with the invite link to our Discord server below. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to flying with you in the virtual skies! https://discord.gg/Z25BSKk84s

Well, this bug came back. Nothing changed since yesterday, and no music at all today in the main menu. Today's log: dcs.log
-
Hi Flappie. Yes, it was not set to 0. I usually kept it around 25 in order to hear the music more in the background. I just loaded in to check this for you and I'll be darned, the music worked when I loaded this time. Very puzzling. Even changed wall papers and that worked as expected too. Here's the log file from this one:dcs.log
-
I have a problem that started in open beta 2.7.10.19473, and followed me into 2.7.11.21408.1 in that there's no main menu music. Even if I change wallpapers, I get nothing. ED modules or 3rd party modules, no music. I can hear button clicks, like if I select the mission editor or load mission so the audio sorta works. I've done a slow repair with no issues found, and nothing jumps out at me from the log file. Sometimes on the last patch, once I exited a mission back to the main menu, the music would work again. In flight audio works just fine. Here's the log file: dcs.log

GPU usage only at 40%, GTX-980
Diesel_Thunder replied to Diesel_Thunder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I don’t have XMP enabled, but I do believe my RAM is capable of it. How much of a boost do you think that would give? -
Good day all, Started a new channel on Youtube, where I’d like to share DCS gameplay, helpful module specific tutorials and guides, and a little silliness here and there. I’d also like to feature some content regarding the 62nd Virtual Fighter Squadron, a newly formed DCS squadron that will open up for membership soon. Hope y’all will enjoy my content!

GPU usage only at 40%, GTX-980
Diesel_Thunder replied to Diesel_Thunder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
@Svsmokey @FR4GGL3 Thank you for the advice, I'll tweak those settings next time I fly. I also tried a couple other things last night. I updated the Nvidia driver to current (511.79), which had a negligible impact. The second thing I tried was setting vSync to fast in the Nvidia control panel. That had a big impact, for the better. Smoother rendering, my FPS went up some, but my GPU use is now 100%! Feels better flying around, and also feels good knowing my GPU is working to its capability, instead of not doing much at 40% load like before. -
Engine bearings and how you can keep them happy
Diesel_Thunder replied to Diesel_Thunder's topic in DCS: P-47 Thunderbolt
Glad you found it helpful! I don't usually land with the RPM at 2,500. I vary the RPM as needed and keep an eye on the MP to make sure I always have some power on the prop. I have a TM Warthog, throttle on the right handle and prop on the left handle. For approach and landing I have them split (throttle lever advanced farther than the prop lever), and move them together that way. Keeps both the RPM and MP happy. Think the only time I go to idle is at the flare, but I'm about 90 MPH by that point anyway. That's awesome that you flew the An-2! Turboprop pilots love that technique, where they can pull the power back and push the props full forward. Slows them down too, and they don't have to worry about crankshafts. -
GPU usage only at 40%, GTX-980
Diesel_Thunder replied to Diesel_Thunder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
While I would love to get new hardware, it ain't in the cards right now. And if it were, I'd be building a new system instead of upgrading this one. I know I don't have the greatest hardware, but I am trying to make the best of what I have. Which at the moment, isn't even running at full capacity with 70% CPU usage and 40% GPU usage while flying DCS. I want to have my hardware running running more towards it's capabilities, especially the GPU. Which is why I asked what I could do better with my settings with what I have. -
When flying the other night, I hit Win + G to do a quick screen record during my flight and noticed my GPU usage was only at 40-45%. So I checked in HW Monitor and saw the same. CPU usage was around 70% on the highest core, GPU was at 40%, RAM usage at 75%, and VRAM at 100%. Frame rate is typically 30-50 in SP, 20-30's in MP. My system specs are: MSI 990-FXA Gaming MOBO AMD FX-8120 32 GB RAM DDR3 MSI GTX-980 4G, nVidia driver 471.11 SSD's for both windows and DCS Single 27" 1080p monitor I'm not in a position for new system or upgraded components right now, so I need to work with what I have. What can I do to better optimize my setup, or better question, have my GPU do more? While I wouldn't mind better framerates, better/smoother rendering would be nice. Below are screenshots of my settings and HW Monitor readings.

Surprised this hadn't been posted yet. Can't wait to fly this in the next patch!

I was unable to launch HARM and Maverick - what did I do wrong?
Diesel_Thunder replied to Hoggorm's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I agree. The trigger only fires the gun in the Viper. Hornet does use the trigger for weapons other than the gun, mostly air to air missiles. It can fire the targeting pod laser if set for that, and AFAIK, is the only A/G use for the trigger other than the gun. All other A/G weapons are fired/released with the weapon release button like the Viper and Warthog. The way the Navy uses the trigger does lend to some confusion I’m sure, especially here in DCS where one can fly multiple airframes. -
I don’t know. To me it seems like a toss up between the Apache and Phantom for most anticipated. At least thats the general vibe I’m noticing on the forum lately.

Having been stationed there, the water is varied and should be deeper. While there are some spots near the main ship channel that are shallow (and a hazard to navigation) for the most part it has good depth. Over 100 ft in areas. There’s even a few scuba diving attractions at the bottom of the harbor. One real interesting dive are the the wrecks of the SMS Comoran and Tokai Maru. It is one of the few places in the world that you can explore the wreck of a ship sunk in World War 1 and World War 2 at the same time, as the two wrecks are side by side on the bottom.

2022 DCS Newsletter discussion - VKB | FLIR Progress | S-3B Viking
Diesel_Thunder replied to BIGNEWY's topic in DCS 2.9
Fuel capacity for the S-3? It depends. Internal fuel only was 13K (1,933 gallons / 13,144 lbs), but could also carry one bag on each wing which added another 4K (300 gallons each / 2,040 lbs). Max total was 17K. In refueling configuration, it had a refuel pod on the left wing, and a tank on the right wing, which gives it a maximum of 15K at launch. It has to share that 15K of fuel between running it's own engines and providing fuel to other aircraft. Really limited in the refueling capability, but it beats not having any aerial refueling at all when out at sea. To put that in perspective, an F/A-18C with two externals carries just over 14K of gas, while an F-14 with externals carries 20K. In DCS, if you are low fuel in either of those aircraft and go tank off an S3, you can get short filled as you take the S-3's fuel load down to it's minimum. Very noticeable in the Tomcat. -
I tested this in the F-14 and could not pick up helos on any Pulse Doppler mode (PD Search, RWS, or TWS). However I was able to see them and lock them easily with Pulse mode, even out to 50 miles. Another observation, we can mad dog an AIM-120 at a target helo, and the missile will immediatly track the target , even though we can’t see it on our radar screen.

need track replay Problems with ALQ-184
Diesel_Thunder replied to flavnet's topic in Bugs and Problems
Works fine for me between this patch and the last one. It’s a short process to get it running, but straightforward. On the ECM panel, (left side, aft of the volume control panel), turn the power switch to standby and then operate. I usually put it in standby after engine start, and operate once airborne. I don’t think there is a warm up time, but it’s habit for me. On your countermeasures panel (CMDS), power on the RWR, set the CMDS switches to JMR and RWR, chaff and flare ON, and mode to either SEMI or AUTO. Back to the ECM panel, press buttons 1-5 and an S will be lit on the button. Set the ECM mode switch to 1 or 2 (mode 3 is a noise jammer and works with the CMDS mode in MAN or BYP). On the stick and when needed, CMS aft will shift the ECM pod from standby to active and the band 1-5 buttons will now have the A lit. Once a valid threat is sensed, the pod will start transmitting (band 1-5 buttons will have the T lit, plus the ECM light will be lit on the left front vertical panel). CMS right on the stick places the pod back into standby. That’s the basics on getting the pod up and running, using it in various missions and threats (SEAD, air to air, air to ground) is a different matter and takes practice in order to employ it and your weapons effectively. -
I was wondering about this as I have near the exact same issue, but with the Mi-26 in one of my practice missions. I’ll set it faster in the ME next time I fly.

correct as-is Position light switches reversed
Diesel_Thunder replied to Scofflaw's topic in Bugs and Problems
The formation knob on the light panel is throwing a wrench into this. That knob position will override the switch settings. I see it full on in your screenshots. On a cold start, that knob is set by default to full on, instead of off. This was messing with me a while back, so part of my startup checks is to turn that knob to off so I can control the lights with the switches. Since the Viper does not have slime lights like the Hog, Hornet, and Tomcat for formation flight, the Viper's formation knob uses the wing, tail, and fuselage lights. -
Best DCS helicopter to train for the Apache
Diesel_Thunder replied to Razgriz27's topic in DCS: AH-64D
I also recommend the Huey. Like mentioned above, the rotor spins the same direction as the Apache so recovery from Vortex Ring State will be similar as far as which way you should move the controls. It also has no stability augmentation which forces you to learn to fly, rotor dynamics, and how all the controls interact without a computer helping you. Once you're able to learn the basics and become proficient (hover, translational lift, forward flight, turning, take off, and landing), you'll have a solid foundation for handling helos. -
I can confirm that this also happens when stationary on the ground. There are two tower cranes on the northern side of Andersen AFB. When lined up to take off on 6L, you can see them just off to the left. At normal view you can only see the control cab and counterweight of the cranes. When you zoom in the frame of the cranes are rendered, see attached screenshots. Normal view: Zoomed in:

I played the heck out of SWOTL in the 90’s on my dad’s 486. I even ported that over into DosBox for when I’m in the mood for a little retro gaming.
