I thought the F-14 had an OPTICAL tracking system that made it impossible to detect when a plane was being tracked.. (And becasue the enemy had no idea it was being tracked, it was a complete surprise when the Phoenix took them down.. At least the FIRST one anyway)

First production models carried the AN/ALS-23 IRST (infra-red) system. It was probably of dubious usability since it was later replaced by the TCS system which was an optical system, but normally operated as slaved by the radar to identify the target from long range (in good visibility conditions only). The F-14D had both in a dual chin pod so maybe the IRST wasn't completely useless (but seems to have been used for purposes other than A2A like navigation at night or low visibility, air to ground search, etc.). In any case, neither could be used to launch a Phoenix, AFAIK, which wouldn't make much sense since they couldn't provide target range. Having said that, if the Phoenix really supported the rumored "flyout" mode, perhaps it could have technically been queued in direction by the IRST or even TCS (though, searching for a target with TCS seems too far fetched), but that would seem like a potential waste of a very expensive missile. Too bad the weapon employment manuals are still classified, I suppose.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

IRST wouldn't have been useful at the ranges the Phoenix operated. The Phoenix also relied on radar tracking data (INS/Autopilot with SARH updates prior to terminal phase), so they would have had to get a radar track before launching.

Now this is pure speculation, but as the Tomcat's IRST was mounted below the nose, it was probably used more to detect sea-skimming cruise missiles and attack planes than high-flying fighters and bombers.

Those Iranian Tomcat pilots were well trained by US instructors, had done joint sorties with US pilots and achieved a stellar victory ratio in the Iraq-Iran war.

Those guys were trained by US instructors, but never joint with them, because of political problem. After Iranian Revolution, all of instructors has left. That's the background of Iraq-Iran War. Try to search Iranian Revolution and Iran hostage crisis.

In that crisis, USarmy lost two CH-53, one C-130 and 8 solider, in order to save the hostage but failed. In this way, shall they show their back to each other?

Iranian Phantom crews did joint sorties with US crews, and some of the Phantom pilots would've converted to the Tomcat. It'd be very odd if they only put green pilots in their new premier interceptor. But this is just a digression.

Starting in 1971 the "Phantoms" flown by mixed US-Iranian crews would average about two sorties per month penetrating Soviet airspace.

ha, I missed that, joint with us guys and trained together. And after the revolution and during the war, they worked by themselves. However us instructors are really good and had many good student.

My first post should have clarified the joint sorties happened in Phantoms, not Tomcats. Anyway, yep they were close allies against the Soviet Union.

We will announce one of our new, advanced modules on Monday. Apologies to those of you who have spent half the night up mashing your F5 key, but we need the extra day to facilitate the creation of our announcement materials.

For those of you with sharpened pitchforks; there are free sausages in the fridge and I see you've already started a sizeable fire.

If it's not the Tomcat..... I will piss myself with laughter..:megalol:

Oh and the carrier will be the USS Robin...:smartass:

A pic on facebook showed the F4U cockpit almost completely darkened out along with an F-14 outline and IJN flag.

That was the F6F's cockpit, not an F4U.

To address your other point. There are 2 Apache models flying around in DCS World, both created by ED. They are beautiful models. Just because they are Ai, does not mean they don't deserve to be shown off.

I completely understand your POV. However I look at it this way: "GET EXCITED!" LeatherNeck is bringing the Awesome! Be happy we are going to be able to fly some amazing pieces of Human engineered machinery. We are all Aviation enthusiasts here. Be enthusiastic! -Woog
