XF-91 Thunderceptor. Ugly AND has a stupid name.

This is the first plane in this thread that I would consider both ugly and lacking any coolness whatsoever. What were they thinking?

What were they thinking?

They thought they could make a swept wing airplane that doesn't want to outright kill its pilot at high speed. ;)

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Probably the fact that looks and coolness play little part in aircraft design :D

Usually the saying goes that pretty flies better. Pretty usually also sells better ;)

Nah, point taken, I know that form follows function. This on the other hand looks simply like they tried to make it as goofy as possible.

Here's one more (Bachem Ba-349):

The Nimrod is definitely a beauty :p (except for the things on the wings and rudder).

I think the thread should be renamed "Strangely beautiful and odd looking jets".

With a subsection: "Jets made less beautiful with too many gizmo's".

Hi,

we all know that beauty and ugliness are subjective notions.

Although this one is not a fighter, I find it very weird if not ugly :

Fortunatly, the landing gear appears to be not retractable :D

I think if you ask any Lightning maintenance engineer, they'd say it was damned ugly to work on. But let's face it, if you get 2 high performance engines, and strap a couple of wings, a tail unit and cockpit to it, you'll either get a lightning or a Phantom.

What is even more ugly is the experimental aircraft that pre-dates the lightning, that has 2 interchangeable tail sections. It's at RAF Cosford if you want to frast your eyes on an ugly duckling. It's the Short SB5.

Then there is the English Electric P1A - now that hit all the branches when it fell from the ugly tree!

One last suggestion is this monstrosity - The Hunting H126 - If you were there at it's birth, you'd have slapped the mother!

To be fair though, we ought to discount experimental or prototype aircraft. Plus of course the original question was regarding jet fighters, so maybe a number of us have stretched it a little.

Damn good thread though!

Nobody puts Tunnan in the corner ;)

Well, as a Swede I might be a bit biased... It would be fun though to have it in DCS an go up against Sabres and MIG-15's.

While I think there are way more hideous examples to be shown among the aircraft, I can't help but also think that among above 3 only Lightning is just barely passable as far as looks go =P. Buccaneer definitely has long been in my ugly list :).

Still, they just can't hold a candle to this :

That just might be the most hideous thing that was taken to the skies, at least in my eyes.
