Just uploaded new versions of these two old favourites to User Files.

They are intended for use in for DCS World 1.5 making use of the new graphics engine that finally gives a good natural metal finish.

Should be up soon.

BoNidle's back in the business! They're great, I hope to see some of Your other "oldies" upgraded as well.

WOW it's incredible and really more realist, congratulation +1

BoNidle if it's possible can you make a little video who show how you make this effect because I want make the same for my textures but I have few problems.

I don't know how you can paint some parts as the logo "Huff" and not other parts...

I've read this topic but it's not easy for obtain the same result: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88855

In advance a great thanks, Skull.

Thanks lads. I will be re-releasing other Sabres over the coming weeks, hopefully with some new ones too.

@Skulleader:

Due to the new graphics engine the natural metal effect is not that hard to achieve now.

I do not know how experienced in the skinning game you are so excuse me if I tell you what you already know.

The first thing you need is the excellent template by Skatezilla, without which none of this would be possible, (all Hail Skatezilla!) which is a PSD file and layered.

The layering function is the most important thing needed in a template.

You also need a graphics program that works in layers. I use Paint Shop Pro X5 and an old version of Photoshop (Version 7). (I know some people use Gimp but i have never used it so I am unable to offer advice regarding its use)

The layers allow different aspects such as noseart to be added without interfering with other detail and also allows the art to be positioned beneath things like panel lines and weathering.

The crucial final metal effect is provided by the SPEC layer that I create following the guide you linked to. The most useful part of the post is Robos instructions in point 4. That is what taught me to do it.

To get a silver-grey effect to the metal ensure that the base colour is grey, adjust brightness and contrast to taste, which sounds obvious but any hint of blue in the colour I have found gets exaggerated by the graphics engine and the aircraft comes out looking a metallic blue colour.

Also you could try creating a layer of pure white to the top layer of your template and then reduce it to 50 and set the Blend Mode for that layer to "Multiply". The white will appear to vanish but I have found that this helps to give the desired reflective effect for metal when you use the eventual saved jpeg to create the SPEC layer at the end of the process.

But I should emphasise that I am as much an amateur at this as the rest of us on here. I have just spent a LOT of time refining results through trial and error over the years.

I hope this has helped.

Cheers,

Bo.

Hi, very talented work there.

You and Skate are doing a wonderful research work trying to find how the new metal effects are implemented and the results are very nice.

Heads up. These skins look great but they are causing some kind of conflict with the cockpit textures of other non-BoNiddle f-86f skins in the missions I've made. No idea why, I've tried putting them in other folders in different directories but its only these from BoNidle: Skatezillas work fine. Picture of the glitch attached. Again, this only happens to cockpit of non BoNidle f-86fs.

These skins are beautiful but I have two observations:

1. Would it be too much to exclude the cockpit textures from them? They feel like being forced a bit and it wouldn't bother too much if they would have... :) mip maps so the shimmering would not scratch retinas. The difference from a cockpit texture set like Grizzly's weathered to this shimmering simple black is brutal.

2. The main texture is jpg. Any particular reason for this? I think is lower quality than a DDS one.

I wish I knew what I was doing wrong. No matter where I put these they cause a conflict with the "stock" USAF skins and make their cockpits all wacky. Any ideas?

It is possible that they don't:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=150331

If you wish to include them could you at least made the textures with "mipmaps"?

Also, it might be optimal to create a RCAF cockpit texture pack (including the one that is seen from external) and everyone can choose to use it and the size of each skin pack will go down a bit. I guess even some performance can improve given the fact that for each skin it has to reload the same textures from each skin folder.

Tried commenting out some of the RCAF cockpit lines but no dice. The issue isn't with the new skins anyways, its what they do to the stock F-86F cockpits. Go figure. I just removed all of the stock F-86F skins for now and everything seems to be fine now. All of Bo Nidle's work should be stock for this module anyways. They look great!

If you disable all cockpit texture (not just some) from a skin they can't do anything to stock cockpit.

You can see in above example. If you edit out also the line Esac_mirmidon mentioned you will deactivate also the texture that paints black the cockpit from external view.

Thanks Azazel.

If you remove all the lines in the description.lua with the word "cockpit" in them and then re-save it will remove the black instrument panel.

It appears to be a bug in the sim, not the cockpit textures themselves, to blame.

I am not using them now until the issue gets resolved and then hopefully put them back in as an option. The black panel is perfect for a Korean war era F-86 which is why I used them.

My thanks to Zaelu also, for pointing out the jpeg issue. I now save as a DDS, which I should have done to begin with, and improved other saving methods too after taking in your suggestions. (Never too old to learn).

Love the livery but there is an issue with it - the nose numbers are rendered on top. Kind request to help get it fixed.
