ctguy1955 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 16.8 upload with 100 peers and my DL is 3.1 kilobytes per sec. I have to wait the entire day to download the upgrade instead of flying. If You don't do the upgrade, the servers are blank. I hope I can get a choice in the near future ? *********** Just read I can hit cancel and use HTTP ****************
Zimmerdylan Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Wow...and I thought the hour and a half was too long. I'll never complain again. I did ACCIDENTALLY cancel the download and discover the http option. It was a he!! of a lot faster.
Looney Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Left it runnng for the night, woke up at 934mb out of 950 with 0.1Kb/sec download. Cancelled it and within minutes was done with the update. I like the idea, needs to be more fleshed ot me thinks. based. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commodore 64 | MOS6510 | VIC-II | SID6581 | DD 1541 | KCS Power Cartridge | 64Kb | 32Kb external | Arcade Turbo
gerd Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 It might not be a bad thing to have an option to choose where the downloaded files are temporarily stored. I suppose we all have DCS on a SSD drive to minimize stutters and torrents do wear out SSD quickly (stream of small writes is bad for SSD health).
klem Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 This is a test. Just click on "Cancel", then you can choose to download it via http and to get your usual download speed. Sporg Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Hi Sith A question: Did they let the torrent updater use the in-game network speed settings? Reason I ask is that I get 200 kb/s upload on a 100/100 Mbit line.. If they did, that could be the culprit of of low speeds: Like many others I have set low network speeds in-game in order not to overload game servers. IonIan11 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I'm frankly relieved I'm not the only one having this issue. Other games that use torrent updating (eg. WarThunder) always slow down until they stop downloading completely on my computer. I was concerned this was another manifestation of that issue. I will be hitting 'Cancel' and selecting the regular download now. As for DCS torrenting in general, I'm personally fine with it, but only if they can get it working as well as the current system and add more control for the many people with sucky internet service. Phantom453 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 ..and at the end has slowed down to this and has been stuck here for ages. 183 peers and only 1.5 KB/s???
KLR Rico Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I don't think it's the bit torrent method in particular, it's just that there's something wrong with the installer's settings. If the ED servers are also seeders, then the torrent should always be at least as fast as the old installer. i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS

Lymark Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I don't understand, can't they make the updater updates similar to the game exe download? It takes less than 30mins for me to download the whole 10GB of the game, whereas it's gonna take me more than a day just to download this 1GB updater updates. It just doesn't make sense :/
Tucano_uy Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Well, in my neck of the woods internet access is mediocre at best. My internet is metered, something that people in Europe or North America might have forgotten of, so I pay for both download and upload traffic. I'm not sure if I'm happy with the change.
KLR Rico Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 If you click cancel on the update you have the option to download via the old method. i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
ED Team c0ff Posted November 24, 2015 ED Team Posted November 24, 2015 updater 2.6.3.26 is out: supports so-called 'web-seeding' - if it can't find data among the peers it will download pieces from http, so it should be best of both worlds. still, pressing cancel on torrents asks to go old-school http which may be better or worse depending on the current conditions. to use new updater you should completely cancel current update process and start again from the 'Update DCS World' menu entry. Tucano_uy Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Something curious: When downloading via torrent, it says the update is more or less 1GB, if I cancel and go the HTTP way, the update is 1,8 GB.

HTTP downloader tells the uncompressed size in the top line because decompression is done on the fly, true DL size is on the left below the progress bar. Torrent downloader tells the compressed size because decompression is done in a separate step. Sorry, this is misleading a bit. Fixing requires some non-trivial changes. 1 Dmitry S. ED Team c0ff Posted November 24, 2015 ED Team Posted November 24, 2015 nice you have a dedicated thread for torrent talks. Sorry that it worked out not so great at the start, but it was the only way to see how it will behave in the wild. It seems like most problems are related to how the files are layed out in the torrents, because while update downloads crawl, installing a full module is blazingly fast so far. We gonna make an experiment or two with the layouts, will see how it goes. Also, there's an idea to let users seed what's downloaded, many people asked for this option. Thank you for your support. Dudikoff Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I think it's a good idea and one that makes sense to offload the servers somewhat (so when I download DCSW installations, I always use the torrents), but there was obviously something wrong with some of the update files since my updates slowed down to 0 when it reached the last files until I canceled it and the last 200+ MB were re-downloaded via http. But, since some people have limited quota's, there should definitely be an option to manage the upload speed.
