I'm surprised no one has commented yet! It looks like a good start! The strato cumulus type cloud visible while on the ground is particularly good!

I have to admit that I am a but of a bystander in DCS right now until I get a new PC built. I havent myself been able to fly for a few years. Where are clouds at within the Sim? Do they grow and flow, or simply traverse the sky? Do your plans include animation of the cloud types?

Are these changes to the parameters in clouds.lua or via shader edits?

I'm curious about this as well.

12th Gen i7 12700K, MSI Z690 Edge mobo, 32 GB of DDR4-3600 RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws V CL16).

Gigabyte RTX4080 Eagle OC (Triple Fan, 16GB VRAM), ACER XV322QU 32" IPS monitor (running 2560x1440).

2TB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (3D TLC NAND PCIe Gen 4 x4).

They certainly are not ready yet but they have a great potential. Since I can't wait, I decided to do it myself.

Nice work! I'm new to DCS and wouldn't even knew where to start. Great that you are experiencing and working on improvements. Very cool.

How did you turn em on ?

What impact did it have on your FPS?

No shaders used, just the lua script and 'edge smoothing' changes as I don't know what the other parameters do. If I could find how they link to the cloud graphic, that would help. Remember I am only doing this while ED sort out the clouds officially ;-) I haven't been given any advice from ED, it's just as it says, 'messing around.

Nice, but looking at that blurry mess makes me crosseyed. I'll be flying with clear skies if they make them like this, so hopefully they have something up their sleeve...

may you point the way for us to try? Like to take a gander on the 4k screen and if they are different clouds see if they flicker with sli or not. Thanks

IMHO they are too blurred. Either new texture is needed or more detailed shape.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Well I won't judge until I get to try and see them in motion. If they are more 3D per say and feel not like a 2d Sprite which the current ones do then I would happily forgive resolution or blurryness.

Please if anybody can post how to activate these be much appreciated.

Ya major fps problem seems they don't utilize the gpus but the processor. Good thing is they don't flicker with sli :)

Well, I also think they are way too "smooth" or "soft"...

They look better than the ones we have now but to make them more "future proof", I hope they work to improve them even if right now performance is not the best.

This new clouds look also too big or stretched, like the edges measure many miles (also the cloud itself) which could of course happen in real life, but looks a bit too boring and unusual to have it as a perennial cloud layer ...it would be so nice to get some well shaped/defined clouds cumulus.

Clouds are soooooooooooooo important (at least to me) for a flight sim...almost as important as terrain itself because a nice, well shaped and complex cloud layer is probably whats more noticeable up there and making them well defined would open a whole new world in terms of hidding/flying between the clouds :joystick:

Another feeling that clouds are always gave to me, is the feeling of "immensity" and remoteness. Looking at some nice and clear small cumulus in the horizont makes the world to look so immense and "unreachable" and also gives coherency to the size of the terrain..so, I would love to see a considerable increase in the draw distance as well as different clouds patterns, I mean, no more perfectly sparced clouds but zones with high clouds density or overcast and zones where there is not a single one, or zones with a big cumulus formations and zones with very thin flat clouds at the same time..

Of course, several clouds layers are also a must as some interaction between them (they generate self shadowing on themselves as on other cloud layers).

And as a picture is worth a thousand words:

(I would KILL for something like this first picture specially)

No, you have to positive the layer clouds (true,) to enable them properly, otherwise you only get the demo or the default. Also need to look at tilting and edge smoothing and have a go at that. Didn't kill my fps, a small hit but nothing more.

Yes I know they are too blurry but I don't know how they link to a graphic file so I could mess with that. Shouldn't take ED too long to get round to proper clouds but with all simulators, getting a realistic weather/cloud formation is incredibly difficult with the computers we are using today. But the ones you get in IL2 BOS are good enough for me even if they are still a bit blurry. Put it this way, don't expect anything like the real thing in the atmosphere, computers are not fast enough...yet !!

Yes, pc today are not enough speed ghz for this... may be with multi cpu / gpu... ?

You think maybe thats why they are not enabled and in the sim yet lol

As a reminder, anyone enabling these, you cant report errors or bugs with these running, its not advised to use them right now.

So can you show us what you did because with sli I get no flicker which is great but in a Huey at Area 51 cold start I go from 120 plus fps to 25 ish when they are enabled. This is at 4K

Nope,

Not for the type of weather formations some are expecting, it just aint going to happen anytime soon, the average gaming computer is FAR too slow. Revisit this issue in another 5 to 7 years but more like 10 years.

Here is the file, back up of course before you do it ;-)
