There's plenty of trainers for the modern era now, how about a few for ww2.

I would like to get the experience of flying this type of aircraft with a DCS level FM, without ED going to far into it.

British trainer, Tiger Moth

Germany trainer, Focke-Wulf Fw 44

Did any of these have guns tho? If not it might not be a good choice then.

None of them have VR support though...

Exactly this. WW1 era is perfect for VR due to the style of fighting and the technology of the period. I would buy an expansions for this era in a heartbeat. I used to fly online in a WW1 sim called Flying Circus. Some of the most fun I had playing with other players. 20-30 per side. Capture the airfield. Such fun. If only that would be possible again but in VR.

I want to look back over my shoulder in VR from my Sopwith Camels cockpit and see my scarf flapping back over my fuselage almost brushing my tail.

Please make this happen. Someone please.

Would be really cool! but probably have a very limited audience. If WWII flying is already small within DCS, with like 12 players online, I don't think that WWI will be more popular. Maybe with good VR support and a complete package of aircraft, (since their systems are less complicated). But DCS strength (and best flight models In my opinion) will remain in jets/helos and more modern age combat. WWI and WWII fans are drawn to history with a lot of story, and DCS is more of a sandbox really.

If they add planes of this era they should at least add 4 of them (2 different Red & Blue planes). A mission designer could create with this a very nice mission.

My favorites:

  • UK: Sopwith Camel
  • Germany: Fokker Dr.I
  • France: SPAD S.XIII
  • USA: Curtiss R-2

:music_whistling: I guess a third party team could get together, get a license from ED, run a kick starter campaign, then after a year of promises and dreams, and a few 3D renders - fold, having realized it is a bit difficult to make stuff work then get ED to pick up the pieces.

That seems to work for other periods!

The title says it all. Would buy all & everything developed for this theatre immediately myself. You?

PS. & namely, would just love to ride me auld Albie D.V just once more ;)

I also doubt that this is a good idea.

Kinda like flying Kites...if i wanted to fly kites it would be RoF...but no, that lasted about 2 months for me and only because squadmates wanted to piddle with it. Could not stand moving that slow for very long.

DCS is on Good path...cant see WWI being done.

I think now that the Normandy map is about to be released it would be a perfect fit for WWI aircraft. I would scoop up every plane made and for the ones who hate that era, just stay away from it. I think everyone would be surprised to see how many WWI enthusiast are out there and would take full advantage of what DCS has to offer.

I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. I completely agree. I think if some upstart dev team was to simply put out 2 planes initially. Green lit by ED for a test sell. A nice Sopwith/Fokker combo they would find them snapped up damn fast. I would guess that with such simple and basic systems development time on them would pretty damn fast. Now sure FM/DM(We are talking wood and canvas here) would take some work but as far as systems go, there really ain't squat much to model. The era seems like the perfect entry point for some new team or as a subset of an existing dev team AND a possible FAST REVENUE generator, with quick module turn over time. I know 2-3 other guys that do not DCS now, but would with WW1 era.

Us older dudes remember well Red Baron(I happened to work for Sierra On-line back in the day) and other titles such as Flying Circus where WW1 era dogfighting was a blast. To think of that brought up to ED level and in VR, which seems 7*7 will not do for "Other WW1 Sim" regardless of my email bot spamming them daily with the demand, I know it/they would sell. Doesn't matter that others wouldn't want it. Others would. I don't buy trainers, other do. My not wanting them has not prevented their existence or making others happy with them. There are ton that want the fun with the ED fidelity without the hassle of dealing with complicated system aircraft and hardcore hotas req's(in term of systems to manage and map).

With Normandy release, there is a suitable secondary env usage and would fit perfectly.

It is the god dang birth and birthplace of what brings everyone here for god sake. Why not allow some team to honor that? Why not some team want to try to honor that? That way, we can enjoy the birth of that era as well.

DCS is already now into WW2 era, why not just say f' it and go all in. "DCS, covering air combat from it's birth to the present." Almost sounds like it could be part of a marketing slogan.

I guess I could use the word to summon it. I heard you just say "Kickstarter" in the mirror 3 times. I think that is how it gets initiated.

I have every single aircraft for that other sim. I would buy a DCS WWI aircraft in a heartbeat.

Hell, I almost bought two kites in Walmart, a few weeks ago, just because one was a Camel and the other was a Dr.1. :D

I am waiting............................

Just watch this vid man.

I think for this threads topic, I made my wish pretty clear.

WW1 Starter Pack: Sopwith Camel/Fokker:

Followed up by a Spad/Albatros/etc...

WW1 Asset Pack with a couple AI bombers Handley Page, Gotha, manned

observation balloons, barrage balloons, few period ground assets.

Boom done, WW1 is now an available period for play and enjoyment for all interested. Could all probably be done in less than it takes to make one 3/4 gen module.

I guess now the work is in your hands. I now will take over the waiting mode. :pilotfly:

Which Camel variant? And do you mean the Fokker Dr.I or Fokker D.VII?

I love WW1 aviation, but if DCS WW1 started with the Camel and Dr.I it would be tragic.

What are you going to have for simulation? A 'grease the heads before takeoff' minigame? A six click process to manually reload your machine gun? Or perhaps your pistol is tied to your view independently so you can 'freelook' around shooting at another fighter?

There isn't anything to simulate in WWI except the most basic, most rudimentary functions. It's also not a very popular period for wargames in general. Static trench warfare and rickety barely airworthy kites?

I just tossed out 2 of the most iconic planes of the period. If someone did it would be up to them to find a nice opposing combo to develop. I just feel it would be best done as a 2 plane initial start to create an obvious 'vs' pairing out the gate. All is a dream I know and not gonna be an offering. But this is a wish list sub-forum after all.

Nope not interested.. Rise Of Flight handles my WW1 interests nicely..

Excellent sim.

Only one drawback. It doesn't support VR.

A shame, really, as I can think of no better sim to showcase all that is so great about todays VR HMDs, with their relatively low resolution.

Disagree there.

There's not much in the way of avionics, but there's still scope for quite in depth modelling of the aircraft's systems, especially the engine and related.

They aren't that robust and there's a lot of managment to do in most airframes to keep them alive.

Plus, the aircraft are difficult to fly and have quirks. The Camel for instance has massive amounts of torque that roll the airframe, causing it to actually turn faster in one direction than the other.

The 'behind the scenes' mechanics, yes, just as with any sim, but on your end there isn't that much to do.
