sze5003 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 They have an updated certificate according to the occulus forums. But they can't push it to us via update because the expired certificate prevents any communication with our occulus app. That's like the time I called support at work to reset my Unix password. Except the guy that was supposed to do it for me forgot his password...lol Asus ROG Strix Z790-E | Core i9 13900K-NZXT Kraken X73 AIO | 32GB DDR5 G Skill Neo 6600mhz | 2TB Sk Hynix P41 Platinum nvme |1TB Evo 970 Plus nvme | OCZ Trion 150 960GB | 256GB Samsung 830 | 1TB Samsung 850 EVO | Gigabyte OC 4090 | Phanteks P600S | 1000W MSI MPG A1000G | LG C2 42 Evo 3840x2160 @ 120hz
outlawal2 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 This is the kind of crap that really pisses me off. So we pay several hundreds of dollars for a piece of equipment and we are held hostage by software off the internet that we have zero control over... Total BS.. "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Wicked.- Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 I couldn't agree more.. I'm in sales and I'm expected to deliver on what I promise. Being held hostage after paying to own a product is theft. Unfortunately I had just installed VaicomPro and rebooted to start fresh and the Oculus went down. I'm like, son of a bitch! Hopefully Hollywood forgives me for thinking it was his software... I totally feel like an ass. aileron Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 My thoughts since day one has been that hardware drivers shouldn't be integrated with sales-ware. Nor should drivers be be a server service. Doing these things: A. Holds the user community hostage to the developer and if they go under. We might not be able to use our hardware in the future. B. Why would a hardware driver ever need to communicate to a client on the internet for any reason. It reeks of unethical business practice.
Wicked.- Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 After much reading on the Oculus forums, the cert that expired is the one that tells Windows it's authentic... make the new cert available for DL and provide directions for installing it. Nope, it has to go through Oculus which probably means a new .exe. Ridiculous. Abburo Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Security is one of the hottest topic in IT since some time. They need to protect their intellectual property, unfortunately their security experts missed few important aspects. If that happens to critical business line software like OS, business apps etc it would translate in money loses and could end into producer bankruptcy. In this case, we are talking about entertainment devices so while is embaracing for Oculus is not a critical damage for anybody. sze5003 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 (edited) The developer can choose to allow the app to run if the certificate expires or block the app. Apparently they chose to block it. Hopefully they changed it now with the patch out.
