They have an updated certificate according to the occulus forums. But they can't push it to us via update because the expired certificate prevents any communication with our occulus app.

That's like the time I called support at work to reset my Unix password. Except the guy that was supposed to do it for me forgot his password...lol

This is the kind of crap that really pisses me off. So we pay several hundreds of dollars for a piece of equipment and we are held hostage by software off the internet that we have zero control over... Total BS..

I couldn't agree more.. I'm in sales and I'm expected to deliver on what I promise. Being held hostage after paying to own a product is theft.

Unfortunately I had just installed VaicomPro and rebooted to start fresh and the Oculus went down. I'm like, son of a bitch! Hopefully Hollywood forgives me for thinking it was his software... I totally feel like an ass.

My thoughts since day one has been that hardware drivers shouldn't be integrated with sales-ware. Nor should drivers be be a server service.

Doing these things:

A. Holds the user community hostage to the developer and if they go under. We might not be able to use our hardware in the future.

B. Why would a hardware driver ever need to communicate to a client on the internet for any reason. It reeks of unethical business practice.

After much reading on the Oculus forums, the cert that expired is the one that tells Windows it's authentic... make the new cert available for DL and provide directions for installing it. Nope, it has to go through Oculus which probably means a new .exe. Ridiculous.

Security is one of the hottest topic in IT since some time. They need to protect their intellectual property, unfortunately their security experts missed few important aspects.

If that happens to critical business line software like OS, business apps etc it would translate in money loses and could end into producer bankruptcy.

In this case, we are talking about entertainment devices so while is embaracing for Oculus is not a critical damage for anybody. We just take few days of PC break and this is a great opportunity to enjoy the real life :))))

how to fix it:

To resolve the "Can’t Reach Oculus Runtime Service" error, please follow these steps:

If you currently have the Oculus app installed:

1.Go to https://www.oculus.com/rift-patch/.

2.Click Download Install Patch to download OculusPatchMarch2018.exe.

3.Open OculusPatchMarch2018.exe.

•If Windows asks you if you’re sure you want to open this file, click Yes.

•If Windows Defender prompts "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then click Run anyway.

•If your antivirus software restricts the file from opening, temporarily disable your AV and continue.

4.Select Repair and confirm you would like to repair the Oculus software.

5.Allow the repair process to run, download and install.

6.Launch the Oculus app.

Shortly after the repair you will be prompted for an update. Please complete the update. The download and update may take up to 10 minutes depending on network connection.

If you uninstalled the Oculus app from your computer:

1.Go to https://www.oculus.com/setup.

2.Click Download Oculus Software to download OculusSetup.exe.

3.Open OculusSetup.exe and follow the onscreen instructions to install the latest version of the Oculus app.

It's interesting how much control we actually don't have over our "devices" these days,..

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

The developer can choose to allow the app to run if the certificate expires or block the app. Apparently they chose to block it. Hopefully they changed it now with the patch out.

There are also businesses that use the Rift to demo software to customers / investors / shareholders etc and were affected. That was a real impact that cost time and money but I do get your point in that it is primarily an entertainment device.

I don't care if it is an "entertainment device" or not.. I paid for it and I expect it to work.. There is absolutely ZERO LEGITIMATE reason to hold the equipment hostage in this manner. NONE

Me? I just paid the 2 grand ransom to FB and got my rift back.

But in all seriousness, I set the clock back and let Oculus update do its thing. I then set the clock to current time and my rift is running fine now.

Well I just received 15 dollar on the oculus store along with an apology.

So all is forgiven :)

You should get it automatically if you used the Oculus desktop app on Rift between 2/1/18 and 3/8/18
