Hi

Being a 99% single player, I wish there was an optional feature to be able to trigger full screen videos right before mission starts.

One could record a video briefing and play that at the beginning of the mission.

Vote if you agree, and if you really want to express your dislike, the option is there.

I would accept animations using ingame engine.

I am not interested in that, and to be fair, this is not the sort of simulation DCS is for me.

That being said, I don't see why that can't be done for some campaigns that are built to be story driven like the old '90s sims.

Although I have voted no, if it isn't too resource heavy for development staff, like a day or two for implementation and testing, why not?

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

I am not sure what you meant by that.

Was it not Wags who said they (ED) have built a great simulator but not a game (note this is not a quote but my memory of Wags' words).

Two words that you posted happens to be a game, which as I saw on YT, has got some sort of story-driven campaign, however, does not belong to the simulation genre.

Is there anything wrong with story-driven campaigns in the simulation genre?

In my view , story driven = game . Speaking purely for myself , i am not a gamer . I am a simmer .

? That seems like an odd position to hold. Every mission/campaign has its “story”. Otherwise you’d just throw a few things down on the map and jump into a cockpit.

It may well be ! Nonetheless , video briefings , animations etc do not appeal to me .

The thread title is "Story mode for DCS-video briefing" . The second post refers to (reasonably inferred) animations . And no , I don't need a story-line for anything I choose to do in DCS . Not saying other's might not enjoy that type of thing .

I am absolutly for it. Anyone know or remember the addon campaign "Rebirth of Honor" by pluswave for another sim? Imho the best single player scripted campaign for a flightsim - and the ingame cutscenes added a lot to that.

But I liked Strike Commander, too. So ... maybe I'm more the gamey type.

I am a gamer and enthusiast of combat flight simulation genre.

DCS is a PC game and not a military grade simulator. It would not hurt to have an option to play animations/videos before mission. Just like you do have the option to create textual / graphical mission briefings right now.

How is the current briefing form more for simulation and my idea / wish, more for a game?

One would not distinguish between gamer and simmer. Simmer, to me, is subcategory of gamer.

I think gamer is a sub-category of simmer :)

Basically every vote in DCS -

A- I want new stuff

B- I HATE having new stuff

Of course everyone votes for A so what is the point!?

This, tbh. It'd be a really nice feature for singleplayer, to be certain, but it always boils down to:

I like new things vs. I don't like things that are different. Kind of like the old Phantom thread that boiled down into a flame war.

Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!

Then perhaps...

...we should have a vote how many people really think that:

Would you like to have an option to play full screen video before mission starts? = "A- I want new stuff"

AND

I am not interested, and I wish to express that as a NO = "B- I HATE having new stuff"

I disagree with both of you, but it is really interesting to see that both answers are getting votes, not only one.

There are multiple uses for something like this, not just storytelling. It's a full screen for creators to use their imagination with.

Training missions really come to mind. Key aspects could be shown beforehand. Overview of opponents and how they maneuver/ how you should maneuver in ACM/BFM type missions.

You could even attempt things like walking to the jet depending on when the video would take place.

Even if you just threw the same briefing cards up it would be worth it for the full screen alone.

I see it as a tool that could be used for some cool things.

Don't want to see it. Press space, or esc, or whatever. win -win.

Yes.

Even as a pre-mission start trigger - then it's up to mission / campaign designer to include or not.

More like ''Jane's Fighters'' series. The Vietnam campaign started with footage from the war while Nixon announced bombing above the 17th parallel.

Oh, then you'll be disappointed to find out this isn't real and is in fact a game. And before you recite that 'DCS is a SIMULATION' chant, are you logging sim hours for the FAA or military? Are you doing this for personal entertainment? Guess what, it's a game. Dress it up however you want, you're only a hairsbreadth from being a cheetos dust covered, basement dwelling gamer just like your typical Xboxer.

I like the bit about the cheetos--covered X-boxer :) But please , don't presume to tell me what DCS is (to me) . For one thing , it makes you sound like my wife , and one is (occasionally more than) enough , thank you :)

DCS' strengths have always been the simulation aspects , hardly surprising given ED's background . Its weaknesses , on the other hand , have been the game aspects . Artificial Stupidity , for example , lack of a dynamic campaign and multiplayer difficulties to name a few .

I likewise approach it as a simulator , dare i say playing to its strengths . I will not list all the heresies that i indulge in to approach it at that level , but i assure you they are myriad .

Now where are those Cheetos....

IIRC, Lock On did support playing avi files before and after missions, but at some point this was removed.

It would be nice to have this back, but I suppose we have to wait till those announced changes to the current campaign system are released.
