Today I cleard the FXO cache.

I then flew with the Hornet on the SC in MP (as single client only).

Then I stopped the session for lunch.

I then restarted the MP session, and this time I selected the Tomcat A.

After a click on the FLY button DCS didn't respond anymore, I had to kill DCS.exe via the task manager after a minute.

I have no track file, since I disabled writing of it with autoexec.cfg.

Attached, find logfile and the mission file.

I had this eternal freeze/crash twice or more yesterday, while testing a friend's mission. I was in a F-14B. My friend was having this freeze as well.

This crash seems to be exclusive to the Tomcat.

The log always ends like this (this is yours):

@II.JG1_VonrdI was wrong. You're still getting the second mission loading crash:

Re DCS crashes on 2nd mission:  It was suggested that I disable Tacview which I did. I was then able to run 5 short instant actions missions in a row. We'll see how this goes.

I have uninstalled Tacview

[There is a new update to Tacview in beta testing so I will wait till that is out before re-installing]

@IronhandMany thanks for your logs. I see OneDrive activity in the middle of the mission loading. Could you please try to disable it and see if the crashes are still there?

EDIT: probably a dead-end, I don't see OneDrive in Wali's FolderChanges list.

I need to reproduce it again because I didn't keep my crash log of this. But I'm not sure HB can do much with the log, because it doesn't tell much... I'll send them my log and yours anyway.

@Wali763@IronhandYour FolderChanges logs and mine are quite similar. When a mission is loaded, the .miz file is unzipped in "Local/Temp/DCS..." folder (.bin, .txt, .png, .ogg files...). But this happens seconds before the loading bar disappears.

The only files which are created when I click "FLY" are the Tacview files. Do you have Tacview installed? If so, could you try disabling it, or at least disabling its recorder? (Settings > Special > Tacview)

I have already tried disabling Tacview and have still experienced crashes. When this happens I don't get the option to click FLY, it stops at mission load done. Should have an opportunity to try running FolderChanges later to help broaden the information base.

I still have to experience my first crash in 2.7. Just did a few runs, can't crash my DCS.

When this get solved i'm interested in the real cause, not just "we fixed it".

I would like to know the difference between an installation which crashes and one that doesn't.

So do I!

I was wrong about my last FolderChanges log interpretation: one temporary file is still being written when the crash happens. It's one of the 3 ".bin" files, the second one in the list. Here's how I see this:

  1. Launch FolderChanges when you're about to load a mission.
  2. Set root folder to "C:\Users\your_username\".
  3. Load first mission.
  4. Hit Shift+R to reload the mission (repeat until you get the second mission loading crash).
  5. After the crash, get back to FolderChanges and stop the logging (red square icon).
  6. Select all lines.
  7. File > Save selected items.
  8. Choose "HTML File - Horizontal" format, name the file and hit "Save".
  9. Open the HTML file.
  10. Find the ".crash" file line (near the end) and copy its creation date.
  11. Use Ctrl+F and paste the creation date.

You'll see one of the temporary mission file was still being written when the crash happened: the second ".bin" file.

I play mostly MP and I crashed every time I reselected my role following being killed, which for me is very often!

Yesterday I did a DCS clean and repair, this did not fix the issue. I then tried the Windows 8 compatibility suggestion mentioned in this thread and can confirm that after several hours play in MP and multiple respawns I did not have a single crash in this way. I did have two crashes in other ways but nowhere near like the issue before, which as I said was 100% respawn or 2nd mission if playing campaign or instant action. Load times were a little longer but quick enough for it to not be an issue. Lag and performance seemed no different.

Until an official fix is released I will continue to use this method unless someone suggests there's a reason not to. SteamVR has a little moan about it but that seems the only negative.

I test in W7 compatibility mode, it works perhaps better than W8 mode. there are no freezing delays when loading mission.

Yes, I was thinking about this yesterday. I started checking to see if something was denying or delaying access to the files in the Temp folder. I looked at Windows AV system and added an exception for all the folders DCS uses. I checked the indexing service, but the Temp folder is already exempted from that.

I loaded a bunch of missions - each time Alt-Tabbing out to Explorer to watch the files being created as the mission loaded. Whenever I did that the missions would load without any problem. I could Alt-Tab back in to DCS and fly the mission. It never crashed while DCS loaded in the background. I also checked to make sure the miz file is deleted each time DCS starts up and it is.

It almost feels like DCS is trying to start the mission before the files are 100% ready.

(I also noticed that some missions dump some strange lua files into that folder and mess up the view system - but that's a different issue.)

This was obviously all done without using Windows 8 Compatibility. I found that while the 8 Compatibility works, it results in noticeable stutter and worse FPS.

W8 comp. mode . . . ? W7 comp. mode . .  . ? or even Windows XP?

OMG.

The further we go back, the better we go forward. That's bizarre even more if it could actually be true..

No wonder, I used W7 until recently, I can confirm that DCS worked perfectly stably on my system and without a sudden drop fps.

Im using W8 compatibility-mode right now and even Im pushing for it pretty hard, I still have to witness my first crash. Only two days now, so Im keeping my fingers crossed, but actually Im pretty optimistic right now. Went back twice to normal mode and pretty fast had crashes, but not so in compatibilitymode.

Except for the bad loadingtimes I did not witness a perf-disadvantage up to now.

@flappie: dont have Tacview installed and also Onedrive is not visible in my test-account. Since I uninstalled it with my admin-account, I assume, it will not automatically activated, when a new accout gets created.
