Very first one I tried was 'Stealth Mission' by Sublogic on my C-64

Couldn't make heads or tails of it. Next was Gunship and the rest is history.

I vaguely remember playing some WWII bomber game on the C64. It was cool because you could switch between the different crew positions. That was probably the earliest I really remember.

After that, I remember MSFS 3 or 4... And thinking the textured ground in MSFS 5 was state of the art. Spent a lot of time with JetFigher II. Dabbled in Janes USAF, flanker, and some others, but mostly stuck with MSFS.

Then a year or two ago I got DCS A-10 and haven't been drawn away since.

My first "sim" was the same as the thread starter's - "Bandits at 3 o' clock" on the Acorn Electron. It looked like this:

n-bandb.gif

I then moved on to "sims" such as Combat Lynx...

...and Flightpath 737

FlightPath737.gif

I played a number of other "flight sims" on the Electron, and later the ZX Spectrum, but it wasn't until my dad finally got a PC that I finally started getting the flight sim experiences I was looking for.

The one that really grabbed me was F-14 Fleet Defender:

After that, it was Tornado on the Amiga...

...and Gunship 2000.

EqfX3oakclU

I eventually returned to the PC and became utterly obsessed with EF2000, which remains one of the best sims I've ever played.

After that, my main flight sim loves were the Jane's sims, especially Longbow and Longbow 2...

...followed by a many years-long affair with Falcon 4.0.

I played all the ED sims throughout this period, but I just couldn't get into them. :(

My next move was to Il-2, which was wonderful. I'm not much of an older-plane guy, but that sim was astounding.

I eventually came back into the ED fold with the release of Flaming Cliffs. The Su-25T remains one of my favourite aircraft.

These days, however, it's the Ka-50 Black Shark that occupies pretty much all of my simulation time.

Looking back, it's absolutely amazing how far we've come. :joystick: :D

I never could have dreamed way back in the mid eighties that I'd one day be playing sims with this level of realism and visual fidelity.

Quite amazing!

Janes US Navy fighters (1997) for me, I remember the sheer joy of taking that big box home and reading through the manual and maps as an excited 11 year old. I don't half miss the days of boxes, a pleasure future generations will not experience. Anyway, I had years of fun with it without having a clue what I was doing, much like the present ;)

^^Wow, not bad for a '95 era sim! :)

yeah it was amazing. And the best part about it, for me at least, is that it took place in the Nordic region, you could fly trough the Norwegian fjords ;) Beating back the pesky Russians :D

I vaguely remember playing some kind of flight game on my dad's Compaq Portable. It had green, wire-frame graphics and came on those big ol' 5.25" floppies. Can't remember what it was called; if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to know.

After that, I think, was Star Wars: Rebel Assault. More of a rail-shooter than a simulator, but oh well. I recall this being crazy difficult for my kid self. Needless to say, I saw a lot of these scenes:

Around the same time Jane's US Navy Fighters came out. So much fun, even though I don't know whether I ever successfully landed on an aircraft carrier. This was also bundled with US Marine Fighters, I think.

Then came Digital Integration's Hind. A friend of mine had the companion sim Apache Longbow and we'd debate which was better/cooler. This game is the reason I squealed like a little schoolgirl when ED announced DCS Mi-24 Hind.

EDIT: While recently perusing GOG.com, I found that both Hind and Apache Longbow are available for about 6 bucks each! There was much rejoicing.

After that, my brothers and I got a Nintendo 64 and I kinda fell out of the PC gaming loop for quite a while so I never played Falcon 4.0 or even Microsoft's Flight Simulator series. Have been getting back into flight sims though and I'm loving it!

My first flightsim ever on the PC was "Falcon 3", for which I installed a math co-processor and another 4MB RAM into my i386 back then. :)

I had a flight sim on the old 5.25 floppies called birds of prey I believe, and you could fly a multitude of aircraft, I think that was my first sim, that or Chuck Yeagers air combat which was a great game. The Jetfighter series I enjoyed as I was obsessed with F14s but the sim that always stood out for me as far as the old flight sims are concerned was Digital Integrations Tornado. That was special...

First sim ever was "Mig-29" on the Amiga 500 shortly followed by "Tornado". First multiplayer sim was Falcon 4.0 back in late 1998, I got it for Christmas and joined my first VFW in mid 1999 (186th Wardogs) and never looked back. I've been flying almost exclusively in MP ever since.

Seem to remember a heli sim called tomahawk on atari800....beautful green wire frame graphics and took an hour to load off cassette....man we were patient back then.

There used to be this website where they listed all kinds of game demos from the world wide web. They were all free. I'd download all of the ones that had to do with flying.

I remember one of them was Red Baron Arcade. That was probably my first, albeit it not much of a flight sim.
