Nobody, but since they have done it for 1.2.7 and 1.2.8, I take it they'll also do it for 1.3.0. I mean, why would you think they change course now?

I wouldnt think they would, why would you bring it up if you wouldnt think they would?

How long have people been anticipating this Edge stuff now, it must be years for some.

They have patiently waited for years, indeed. Still a few more months don't hurt as much as a bug infested, half working release would! We knew it would take time when they announced it will be a new engine, built from scratch.

We know they are hard at work on this to integrate all parts... EDGE, Maps (at least Caucasus and Nevada), AI objects and ALL modules! Just testing these will take some time. And my personal guess is, with EDGE some changes in the Mission Editor need to be integrated, as well.

From russian forum:

I have not seen this demo ... maybe I missed somewhere in these 500 pages of this topic but impressive in any case.

So, thats EDGE. Does anyone know how much hardware demanding compared to the current DCS? With my current PC configuration I have about 30+ FPS on High settings.

... I think people don´t make "illusions" or perspectives of new theatres of maps based on that video.

Are you saying we should imagine the possibilities or ...? I did not quite understand you, what you mean.

this looks.... too good to be true...

Well, I thought so too.

ED is in the process of ''cooking'' this kind of terrain to work with their dcs modules.

Correct me if im wrong.

I hope, im not.

The challenge is to balance overall resources. Our PCs have limitations on CPU and Video processing power. To work in DCS it needs to balance, flight models and physics, avionics, ground and air AI and terrain rendering/generation including complex lighting and a ground/objects collision detection. That's a lot of heavy computing tasks.

Now make it as good looking as possible, without dropping AI routines, have to use simplified avionics etc. and still get some 30-60 frames on an average Flightsim PC... what the videos show might be possible with a PC dedicated to just render the world/terrain and lighting. I guess it will be a major improvement over the current engine, because it can use more efficient technology in DirectX 10/11, so it will look damn good!

Still the balancing and testing is a huge task, I guess.

That video have been linked to this thread earlier as well+ similar videos to that. That indeed show professional sim maps and I doubt those have even pushed the limits of the EDGE in terms of attention to detail or topographic map.

This is an over discussed and well tested and documented myth about computer power vs simulation needs about dcs .

simulations can be run ridiculously easy. The graphics engine is the problem.

And the problem is not the ''horse power'' of our pc's. Its the inefficiency of the graphic engine, which was good 10 years ago bytheway.

Please dnt start this conversation again... please, please...

exactly, sorry for replying before reading all of your post :(

Never mind! I know exactly what you mean... :D

There's more to a Simulation than just the Terrain. Before you have a living world, you need to pass a lot of data between different parts of the software. To and fro. Where are all the planes? What air density, wind and temperature is at each plane's position, and that's just air space, add ground war, missiles and projectiles, now check all these frequently against the terrain elevation layer for collision and tracing light for shadows on the ground for each plane or vehicle... so a lot of compkexity, where you can easily waste precious rendering power... that's what I meant by balancing.

EDGE will debut with DCSW 1.3.0

Until there is an announcement saying otherwise, nothing has changed.

The Doomsday attitude and sarcastic comments regarding release days is starting to get stupid.

Post more screens and video's of the work in progress.

This always lifts the mood in threads like these

Is this EDGE ?

Yes, that should be EDGE, but(!) keep in mind that is a demo focused on the terrain/environment rendering, so we may have seen something rendered on a specialised hardware, or a machine where all computing power was dedicated to AI traffic birds etc.

What it shows is the possible detail, cloud layers, lights and shadowing system it supports. So a lot more than we used to have. Final implementation may not be as stunning, but it will be way beyond the current engine, I guess.
