chaos Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 This screenshot is the most promising for me, as a "low and slow" guy  This!!! Even for the fast movers, there's a lot of fun to be had doing a 'Trench Run' through narrow canyons. I foresee another racing competition flying from A to B via a route through the mountains... just like we did back in '96(?) using Flanker 1.x. How far we've come. It is truly amazing what ED (and comp-tech in general)have accomplished in less than 2 decades... "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage..."
blackbelter Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 This screenshot is the most promising for me, as a "low and slow" guy  ...fingers crossed for the December release! Mountains in the current engine look pretty aweful with their smoothness... These new mountains indeed look awesome. Also, currently buildings in DCS look pretty 2D when viewed from certail angles. Hope there will be improvements here in EDGE.

Eight Ball Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) :( I'm sorry to be that guy but I'm a bit disappointed with the NTTR map. It was announced 4 years ago and honestly I find the textures really poor. Vegas and Nellis look great tho I don't know, it reminds me the Sout Asian map in Take On Helicopter or when FSX can't load the textures fast enough. Even at high altitude with a wide angle the textures don't look neat, it's kinda blurry. I know EDGE is capable of much more, strangely enough the caucasian map looks great in DCS 2.0 Sorry, I don't want to be disrespectful but I can't pretend I'm impressed :noexpression: Edited December 5, 2014 by Eight Ball Find The Links To All My Mods And Liveries Here (in the gallery)

Raven68 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 :( I'm sorry to be that guy but I'm a bit disappointed with the NTTR map. Nothing to be sorry about really. As in empty and devoid of many notable features, especially at altitude. Or at speed. *hint* *hint* Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.
eFirehawk Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) :( I'm sorry to be that guy but I'm a bit disappointed with the NTTR map. It was announced 4 years ago and honestly I find the textures really poor. Vegas and Nellis look great tho Yeah I get what you mean, I feel the same way, the terrain seems to be soft and blurred. Even though I think the WIP images might not closely represent what will be released, I guess the blurry textures could simply be a limitation. LOD transitioning is a difficult thing to deal with in flight sims and EDGE will be better than the current engine for sure, but I doubt it will extremely well optimized ( ED is a small team ). To get rid of that land that looks like a vanilla ice cream, I think that several higher resolution textures would have to be loaded simultaneously. Nevada will have a lot of different textures, not the same ones tiled and blended everywhere like the current map. That though could cost on performance ( and dev time ). I believe we might see LOD mods that will at least help with this :) That's just what I'm guessing though, could be totally wrong :) Everything else looks great though. Lighting looks pretty cool, can't wait to fly above Vegas! OnlyforDCS Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 You guys do realize that static screenshots look a lot different from a moving image in a game?? You also realize that we are talking about a desert here. Have you ever flown above a desert? In RL I mean? Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.
ED Team NineLine Posted December 5, 2014 ED Team Posted December 5, 2014 Yeah I dont know what that guy's been smoking. But to me those desert shots look awesome. Desert. As in empty and devoid of many notable features, especially at altitude. Or at speed. *hint* *hint* Yes, down low in a Helo, it will really shine... but I guess peoples expectations of a almost 500km squared map are higher than what is achievable in most engines... I dont know, I am at a loss, I have the Hornet shot as my wallpaper, and I think it looks incredible... even with the knowledge that its still a WIP, but then I am just a fanboy so that doesnt help my argument at all :P I think if people look at the big picture, being the size and what ED is trying to support here, land sea and air, I think what they are steering towards is pretty damn impressive.... Eight Ball Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) I haven't been smoking anything in awhile...maybe that's the problem :P Indeed, it would be interesting to see how it looks in motion. But I really fail to see what flying over a desert in real life has anything to do with this. You certainly don't suffer from any texture compression IRL as far as I know... I'm talking about ground textures here. The lighting, the view distance, the way the horizon smoothly blend with the sky, all that looks gorgeous. ED Team NineLine Posted December 5, 2014 ED Team Posted December 5, 2014 Atmospheric hazing can soften things even in real life. So while they are still dialling it in, viewing at a long distance isnt going to be crystal sharp all the time, especially in a simulation, I think you guys are putting unrealistic expectations up, name a sim that can view this far this good.... Yeah I get what you mean, I feel the same way, the terrain seems to be soft and blurred. Even though I think the WIP images might not closely represent what will be released, I guess the blurry textures could simply be a limitation. eFirehawk Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 name a sim that can view this far this good.... Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is a good example. And it runs on consoles. :) You're right though, that still doesn't change the fact that our expectations for a small team like ED is way too high. What you see in the screenshot below had a massive budget. Pentium II 233Mhz | 16MB RAM | 14.4kb Modem | 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive | Windows 3.1 with TM Warthog & TrackIR 5
