I could swear some big names used the term.

Thanks for the clarification.

In most cases and previous cases, A terrain engine is supplemental to the Rendering Engine.

Terrain Engine was the software that drove the random creation of terrain.

Popular in the 90s, as most companies didnt have the data to recreate regions of land, Most games had randomly generated terrain, and terrain features.

as Satellite Imagery became available, Developers started using regions of land built using the Satellite data.

The last game that I actually saw a "Terrain Engine" listed was SimCity 4.

Now, most Rendering Engines Handle Pre-Built Terrains now.

Some Developers use the Name "Terrain Engine" for the Engine that drives the ground environment (Roads, AI traffic, AI Movement, loading and unloading of scenery objects etc etc)

But in most cases it's really just a sub routine in the Render Engine code.

Sorry if this has been asked or discussed before but, you know 220+ pages, I have a bit of spare time on my hands but not that much....

Has there been any discussion on having deformable terrain? I think that would be great to have, so if not in the early builds it would be nice if it could be something to work towards.

Luthier had talked about tests with bomb craters and such, I dont know if that means dynamic dynamic damage of any sort, but would be nice...

SpinTires style terrain/vehicle interaction would be awesome, but I would expect something more along the lines of decent looking post-impact craters and such, possibly even affecting vehicular travel in a limited way.

The Minsk office took over Nevada and used it as a test bed while Developing EDGE, among other things.

Thanks Nate. Is it part of ED, or third party?

Holy crap! Now that is looking amazing. All the fine details and more that made Lock On look so great at the time it was released. If ED can pull this detail off for a full scale map with "streaming" render technology..like the ones in other graphic engines like frostbite 2, I think we have a fantastic future with DCS.

Map may cost more than 50 bucks, I hope I'm wrong.

Around 50-100 bucks is reasonable even for DCS standard if you ask me.

Then again, we all live in different locations of the world with different values on bucks.

Agreed. Assuming these images represent what a DCS map will look like, even $100 would not be out of line. Anyone who buys good FSX terrain has easily spent quite a bit more.

Question appears, why has there not been any map developers for FC and DCS? Because they could not charge for the work since it is based on FC/DCS? or is there no tools?

The tools for the older terrain engine weren't the best and they stopped supporting it a while ago. You can find them here: http://en.wiki.eagle.ru/wiki/Editing_and_modding A few projects were started but never finished, I believe the anticipation for "EDGE" caused some to halt work until they can have the EDGE tools. Hell I even investigated what all would be needed to create a terrain and gathered some terrain data, but that fell through. The tools for EDGE aren't publicly available. When or even IF they become available is unknown at this time.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

I think $100 will remove quite a lot of ppl playing DCS if this is the cost for a small map. Please remember that FSX is a total earth in some low detail and the new textures cover most of a country or even a larger part of the world like the new REX Ultimate Europe. If ED releases something in low resolution that covers the complete earth for developers to add new textures to different areas the case would be different.

EDIT: Sorry I was thinking of "Orbx FTX Global" witch is a global terrain pack for FSX and is prised to $100

That's irrelevant. If you like to fly multiplayer in FSX you don't have to buy expensive addons to play with the ones that bought them.

Expensive maps in combat sims will fracture the community.

I have heard this before about sim addon prices too. I am curious, at what price level does the community become fractured?

Keeping in mind that most play single-player!!!

With current modules released, the community is not fractured, because they can still play together.

Just as RoF did. In fact, you could even man gunner-stations in aircraft you didn't own. It changed a lot, though with the new channel-map released.
