cichlidfan Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 It's very likely that Oculus is going to begin to send prototypes to many software companies at some point this year. They stated that they are going to use the last investment in making sure that there will be plenty of quality titles the day the consumer Rift is finally available. I hope that a set will go to the ED team. ED already has a first gen dev kit. Kuky Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 well unless the resolution and clarity is high enough to read the HUD and instruments, OR will be useless for DCS... the initial "wow" factor wears off and even though you would get awesome feeling of being there, it would be like someone that needs glasses flies the plane without his glasses. :) 1 PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR

mhe Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 True, but it is a common misconception. Look at the term "sensor bar" from the Wiimote system. The actual cameras (sensors) were in the Wiimotes themselves, the sensor bar was just a bar with 2 IR LEDs a specific distance apart. You could even replace the bar with 2 candles and the system worked flawlessly, but the term sensor bar remains to this day. Sad but true. | i9 12900K | 64GB DDR5-6000 | STRIX RTX 4090 OC | LG 38GN950 38" | | Hanns-G HT225HPB | TIR 5 & Varjo Aero | Virpil Throttle & Stick | TM TPRs | You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.

I'm cautiously optimistic about OR, but I suspect that we're going to see a huge backlash against the OR once the "wow! gee whiz!" factor wears off, and the shortcomings become apparent. It won't necessarily means that the OR will be bad, or unusable, but I strongly doubt it will be as flawless as people are hoping/imagining, and that frustration and disappointment will manifest in "bitch threads". I can easily envision complaint threads about lag, lag induced nausea, low resolution, not being able to see the HOTAS controls, etc. The technology has promise, and I won't discount it yet, but I'm very skeptical that it will be as "kick-ass awesome!" as people are hoping/predicting.

I hope people will not dismiss this technology because of initial shortcomings e.g resolution. As with every new technology time is required to people to accept this type of gaming and learn how to use it properly. As well time is necessary for developers to improve it in every aspect in next versions. Look at TRACKIR’s specs and how they improved over time with another release. I’m sure at one point Rift will be good enough for DCS. Well maybe not consumer kit ver. 1.0 but maybe 2nd iteration (4K screen-who knows) with much polished edges will be something to invest in. After reading comments from CES 14 where Oculus demoed latest prototype I have that impression that this technology will stay for good.
