Uhhh wut? :noexpression:

There is lag in the Fly By Wire Systems of all aircraft fitted with them. You issue a command and some time later (after processing) the flight control system actuates the control surfaces. For an F-16 this figure is 4.95 ms (stabiliator) to 0.136 ms (flaps) according to the NASA technical report I'm using for my simulator (which I hope to adapt to the SuperHornet too). This lag bites pilots transitioning to the F-16, especially on take-off where they overcommand pitch up due to the slight delay between giving the command and the FLCS implementing it.

Where this matters is that the longer the time to build up from unloaded to loaded condition generally the longer a pilot can maintain Gs. That's why pilots are trained to progressively apply G rather than jerking the stick to max loading.

Not something I've seen as a commonly cited problem in my observation of the Hornet, at least. (Nor really something I've recognized as a problem in the Viper.) 5 ms is indeed lag, but for all intents and purposes negligible. From what I hear, the problem for new Viper drivers is that in takeoff/landing gains, the FLCS is a pitch rate command system. Couple that with a relatively fixed control stick and... well.

I was more referring to this statement:

The centrifuge can apply G in a much more controlled manner than yanking on the stick (although there is lag in the Fly By Wire System).

Which made it seem as though you thought a centrifuge could match the onset rate available in the aircraft.

We should talk some time about your simulator, by the way.

From my understanding, the reason F-16 pilots have a hard time when first flying the jet, is the new Blocks have non-linear output, while the older Blocks had linear.

^^It's available on youtube (the whole doc) in parts. Just look it up. wink.gif

I know its on there but this is one of those shows that really deserves the 1080p HD treatment for its cracking visuals.

It´s an awesome show, thankfully they have been running reruns of it at night over here in Germany lately, so I got my fix. smile.gif

Didn´t find it on BluRay either, but if you can settle for DVD, here is the official place to buy it: http://papernyfilms.com/store#ecwid:category=0&mode=product&product=363167

Hey thanks for that, It would be nice if they would show it here again. ive almost purchased it a few times but have held off, i think il shoot them a message to see if they plan a bdr release, if not il pick up the DVD :)

They frown on the 'b' word here but it is rather silly anyway. FC3 has a release date. It has slipped but it has a date. The closest anything else has is a potential 'pre-purchase' date for the Huey.

I find it a bit strange that 4.95ms would make any difference because it’s really fast for example: A musician plays electric guitar through a cabinet, 4.5ms= 1.35 metres, that’s the distance between the musician and the cabinet, a musician would begin to notice the difference in timing when the distance of the cabinet is 10 metres away and play ahead of time to compensate for the delay, 1000/300X10= 33.3ms to have a better idea 20ms = 1 cycle of sine wave when you hear a 50Hz power supply.

Nothing is instantaneous, a mass is a measurement of inertia and to rotate an aircraft on its axis requires acceleration, in theory if I had a control surface at it’s extremity for 1ms, not a lot would have happened.

That’s all folks.

It'll be out in two weeks starting sometime in this month or the next.
