  1. Banned from Spar!!! Banned from Spar - Didn't like shopping there anyway! Yesterday I was at my local Spar buying a large bag of Winalot dog food for my loyal pet and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? On impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Winalot Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time; but I'd lost 2 stone before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the kerb to sniff an Irish Setter's arse and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. I'm now banned from Spar.

  2. Yea you can use a Multi/Sub object for material slots to add more. ED says it doesn't work but I've been using Multi/Sub materials for years with LOM and had no problems at all.

  3. Items needed: Instant(Super) glue :1 qty (can be used metal & plastic) A1302 chip x 2 ( you can buy it from http://www.leobodnar.com/products/BU0836/ scroll down) Rare Earth 6.5 mm cubic magnet x 2 (I got it from ebay) I did it my pots are totally jumpy, you should try this but your own risk. There is datasheet about A1302 and connection diagram etc at leobodnar.com too. The gap between A1302 & magnet is about 1 mm, if less than 1 mm, values saturate too fast before reaching gimbal limit. you have to adjust gap, and magnet orientation. http://seveng-f18.com

  4. Hi all... I have taken some parts of Red baron's excellent G940 profile and made up a quick reference HOTAS layout. Red Baron did a REALLY EXCELLENT job of burning the functions of the HOTAS buttons into our overloaded minds... thanks Red Baron! Hope it helps our new pilots learn the muscle memory a bit quicker. It will print on an letter sized piece of paper. The large version shows where the buttons are on the Warthog and uses 2 pages (thanks eddiejb for the new version!) 6. You've probably all heard about the Iraq War Logs posted on WikiLeaks.org. The files contain a wealth of information on operations conducted during the war in Iraq. Then there is also the Afghanistan war diaries. There are hundreds of reports on CAS operations. I had the idea to make some of them into missions for DCS: A-10C. The first issue that comes to mind is no Iraq or Afghanistan map. My opinion is that recreating the events in the sim could create just as nice an experience as if we would have such a map. True, it will kill some immersion, but you will still be going trough the same processes as the real pilots did. Second issue is that all reports are isolated events. So for a realistic scenario you'd have to comb multiple reports and mold it into a scenario. I consider this doable though it is quiet some work. I had planned to wait with making a mission like this till final release but I was building away anyways so I made a concept mission. For this concept mission I have selected the following report from the Iraq War Logs: AT 1150D, THE MEDEVAC HELICOPTER (FROM SIGACT AT 030900D) SPOTTED 3X BOATS FLEEING FROM THE IED SITE ON THE . ___ WAS OBSERVED WITH RPGE___. RW-CAS IDENTIFIED THE TARGET AND FIRED 2X TOW MISSILE INTO THE BOAT. THEY REPORTED SECONDARY EXPLOSIONS FROM THE TARGETED BOAT. ___ DETAINED 2X AIF WHO SWAM TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE . ___ BOAT PULLED ASHORE AND 4X AIF SURRENDERED TO THE /___ QRF. THE THIRD BOAT PULLED ASHORE ONTO AN ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ___ AT (___ FU ___). ONCE ASHORE, THE OCCUPANTS THREW SUSPECTED ___ CRATES INTO THE ___ THE . ___-CAS DROPPED 1X GBU-___ AND FIRED 2X ___ DESTROY THE SUSPECTED WEAPONS CACHE ON THE ISLAND. 1X ___ A UXO, SO BOTH ___/RW-CAS CONDUCTED ___ RUNS ON THE ISLAND TO DESTROY THE MISSILE. I chose this one because I had a nice idea of how to do it in sim once I read it. As you can see, the details, like ordnance used, are blacked out. So I had to use my imagination a bit. Also for this mission, I didn't want to go as far as to search for related events. There are some skirmishes here and there and other planes doing CAS. The main "window-dressing" event though is a full-fledged airborne assault on an insurgent position complete with F16 strikes, Apaches, Blackhawks dropping infantry and Chinooks dropping some heavier stuff. I have been detached for 3 months with the dutch air mobile brigade and I tried to make it look like how they do it for real. The assault is nicely coordinated. I didn't do an effort in recreating true to life command structure. There is one commander for the entire mission and his callsign is Romeo. I chose these solutions for this concept to spare my time. If people like missions based on these war diaries, I plan on incorporating true events that happened at the same time as the mission the player is flying including real command structure and so on. As for the events described in the report, I tried to incorporate them as close as possible using my imagination where necessary. You'll have to do some observing and then drop ordnance. I did add a cold-war style surprise event when the main mission is complete. It has to do with the airborne assault, lets just say somebody got pissed off :) (be sure to check out the little details) It was hard to make a mission unfold while playing, making a detailed briefing impossible, and still giving the player necessary info. I had to use text for that and there are quiet some messages. Maybe you need to pause sometimes, its hard to guess for me. Have pen and paper handy in case you need to write some coordinates down. Because there is quiet some AI this might affect your fps negatively. Its not just random AI though, almost every unit has a purpose in the storyline. The terrain where the mission plays is not so demanding and I was able to maintain good fps troughout. On homebase fps is down but i think thats normal. Some things to know before you try the mission: Callsigns: Your callsign: Enfield1 (important!) Commander : Romeo RW-CAS from Iraq War Logs report : Uzi1 QRF from report : Quebec Alpha Frequencies: CAS aircraft : 128 AM Air Assault Op : 126 AM Everybody else : 124 AM All in all, this mission was a lot of work. You might say, how can it be? Lots of work in three weeks? But I am self-employed and I took the past weeks off to fully crash into A-10C. Please try it and leave a comment if you have one. I am curious to know how you found the mission particularly if the story was clear and if it was clear what was expected of you. Be sure to also check out the air assault, maybe on second play-trough, it looks quiet nice and I am happy with the result. Also, I am looking for any documentation on SOP's. Especially of course on air operations but also counter-insurgency. I have ordered a nice stack of books for reading already but the more the better. I hope you enjoy this concept as well as this concept mission. EDIT: Updated mission. -Tweaked the air assault. I made a last-minute move in some units which kind of broke it and I am sure if anyone that has ever participated in such an assault saw this and knew i had created it, he would come to my door knock me out and burry me under 6ft of concrete. So now the assault is as it should be. Fast, furious, no remorse, firepower, kill, -More events relayed to the player. Now you get messages when critical events occur. I think this has increased immersion tapping more potential of the events I scripted in the mission. -Briefing has been hugely expanded listing more callsigns so you can keep track of each of them on radio. Briefing now also include an intel briefing by the gorgeous Sarah O'hare :) -Dedicated invisible JTAC introduced in final part in case the other JTAC does get finished because the Apaches are having a bad day. They seem to be very inconsistent with Hellfires in current code. Not a problem it makes my mission dynamic :D EDIT: added light version with reduced AI EDIT: added link to documentary (pretty leftist) : http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/iraq-secret-war-files-wikileaks-special/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+TopDocumentaryFilms+(Top+Documentary+Films+-+Watch+Free+Documentaries+Online). I do not endorse this doc whatsoever, just thought I'd put it up for anyone who's interested in some backgrounds on the wikileaks files. No hatemail please or posts about the doc here :) EDIT: Note to anyone who wants to try mission with BETA 2: It works, but the AI battles in the mission need rebalancing since they perform quiet differently now. The yankees get hosed now! Also blackhawks are invisible but I think that is known issue. EDIT: Uploaded v1.3! Changes: -Mission is now take-off from runway with a 4 minute intro window giving you opportunity to look around the AI units. It was the easiest way considering increased startup times due to aligning. -Speedboats popping flares due to LOD issue -Tweaked Messages -Tweaked AI -Randomized AI skill -Ending stage changed (now no crashes!) -changed default loadout IraqWarDiary1_v_1_3.miz Co2.IraqWarDiary.miz Co2.IraqWarDiary_night.miz

  7. As this was disscussed in other thread in General disscussion forums I am making it official here: What I would really love to see in DCS regarding ATC is the following: 1 request other runway 2 request weather information 3 call out mayday or panpan emergencies 1 - even if the controller recommends the other runway, it is always the pilots decision where he wants to land. Sometimes a shorter approach with a little tailwind is better option than longer with headwind 2 - on longer mission requesting the weather sooner, will help you preparing for landing in advance, where conditions at the airfield might be quite different than at target area, especially now with dynamic weather implemented 3 - how many times have you landed with your Hog pierced with bullet holes and from time to time pieces of the airframe missing (half a wing perhaps? :pilotfly:) calling out mayday would initiate the ATC to clear the runway and give you instructions for as fast landing as possible. On the runway of your choice of course, just like in real life.

  10. Good enough for practical purposes perhaps, but not really true. Heat is not the same as temperature which is not the same as IR radiation. They are all separate but linked phenomenom. The IR signature of an object will depend on its temperature (not its heat content), thickness, material, surface condition (rough vs polished) and even viewing angle in some circumstances. Different materials will emit different amounts of IR radiation at the same temperature. Polished metal may emit half the radiation as rough metal (surface area thing perhaps?). Bricks and wood will generally emit more than polished metal at the same temperature. ...but yeah, in a general scene most things would have pretty similar emmisivity, and I agree it's probably not worth the effort to model perfectly. Splitting hairs, BiPod.

  15. If you were chastened for anything it was for overbearing pretentious comments and a general lack of objectivity when questioning someone else's objectivity. Not to mention a complete lack of foundation for your opinions. this has to be my favorite quote of anything you have ever said. "If today, right now, I fired DCS Warthog up for the first time, I would be too much in awe to see that the SADL system has problems that will most likely be worked out within days." That is the definition of objectivity... yeah not really. When you review something you have to review it for what it is not what you want it to be or think it is. That IS OBJECTIVITY. You were right about one thing though, the relativity of truth hasn't been threatened... at least by anything you've posted so far.

  21. That sets the camera FOV limits. If you want to adjust the "reset" zoom value, edit Config/View/SnapViewsDefault.lua. Look for Snap[11][13]["viewAngle"]. The stock value is 75.0. Higher FOV values equate to zooming out. Change the value to what you like. You have to restart the sim to see the changed values. You can read the comments at the top of the file to get insight into what the 11 and 13 mean if you are so inclined. This assumes you have UseDefaultSnapViews = true in Config/View/View.lua. If you have it set otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking this question in the first place... And to reiterate: back up before you change anything (or go all software dev geek and use a version control system ;)).

  29. Yes, the spent fuel is kept in pools around the top of the reactor, sealed in zircalloy cylinders, but these can take a hell of a beating. So, unless there was any sort of event that heated those cylinders past their melting temperature of over 2000°C, the water in those top pools remains only slightly activated from the residual radiation of the fuel rods, since no chain reaction takes place in those pools. While it is true that e.g., Caesium isotopes have the potential to make the area uninhabitable for a significant time, it remains to be seen, which elements have been deposited around the plant in what concentration.

  31. Thanks God , wind farms and solar aren't the only solutions . green technologies are numerous and very promising but they have to face powerful lobbies not only nuclear but oil one too . numerous technologies based on sea are available and sea isn't something faulty in Japan i do believe so . and here's something that tend to confirm that fact BBC a little ship would have crossed accidentally the road of a little contaminated cloud . pretty disturbing

  32. I sort of doubt it. What I expect to happen is that expansion plans get stopped (they were planning to expand from something like 34% nuclear to 50% nuclear in the grid), but since they don't have much in the way of alternatives I'm unsure what they could replace them with. They don't have much in the way of free land to use for the massive solar/wind farms that would be needed to replace them, I'm unsure if wave farms are a mature enough technology to help them, and they have no coal/oil/gas deposits to replace them with fossil. What I hope will happen is that this will remind the powers that be that they shouldn't be cheap on funding fusion research. If any country can finally crack that one it is the Japanese, and this just might give them the final motivation to go all in with it.

  34. I currently fly B737/-5,-7,-8,-9,-900ER. Previously DC10, A320, EMB-135/145. Someone mentioned that military pilots don't like to admit they fly sims. But I think it is true that few really do fly sims. 30% of First Officers I fly with are ex- (occasionally current) fighter guys and practically none fly sims. It makes sense that they don't. There is sort of a been-there-done-that attitude. Plus, the first hint of silliness or unrealism (which even DCS has plenty of) is an immediate turn-off. I did recently fly with a guy who still flys F/A-18s in the Navy Reserves. His first exposure to "jets" was Flanker 2.0. He seemed to think that the Flanker experience really helped him initially in pilot training. I tried to turn him on to Rise of Flight and Black Shark but he was pretty married to his xbox. Rise of Flight, I think, is perhaps the strongest draw to "real" pilots because the flying is so completely different than anything in current experience BUT nearly all current BFM techniques still apply.

  41. ASUP FUBAR Really if you aren't getting target elevation from DTC, what's going on here is that your EGI is not fully in sync. This can be prevented by allowing your INS NAV to sync to 4.0, switching to NAV, then doing your IFFCC checks and DTC upload. You can tell if you have EGI inconsistencies in two ways that I know of: 1. Go to stat page on L MFD. On page 2 you'll see EGI. If EGI is yellow and has a DEGR indication next to it, that means you FUBARed the startup procedure. 2. Line three on the bottom right of HUD is 'Steerpoint Distance to Go / Target Elevation'. If your EGI is fully in sync you'll see something like 25.1/DTC (target elevation is being derived from DTC). In other words it's being updated dynamically from known elevations in the nav computer from EGI, depending on what your SPI is and elevation of current location. If it's not in sync you'll see 25.1/10000 (meaning your steerpoing is 25.1nm away and at 10k ft.) ALL IS NOT LOST If you did get impatient and FUBAR the startup procedure, all is not lost. Follow these steps to manually choose DTC as the Target Elevation Reference: *On the UFC panel, press 'down' on the Data Rocker *The value on line3 bottom right of HUD for Target Elevation, will flash *Press 'down' on the SEL Rocker until the flashing value on line3 of the HUD shows DTC If you want to make sure you're doing the startup procedures properly, I would suggest using paulrkiii's checklists (often mimicked but never matched). He's a RL Hawg mechanic (and pilot of the most excellent 1st Virtual Fighter Wing, 25th Virtual Fighter Squadron, as is yours truly.. hopefully very soon).

  42. This is very personal of course, but when I fill up my car these days I pay around $65 and it lasts me a good two weeks (1k KM). I drive a Volvo diesel, mostly to work, and it doesn't have a GAU/8 to work my way through traffic jams. And even if it did, I reckon the recoil would probably just propel me right back where I came from. The $60 for DCS A-10C provides a whole lot more :) Joking aside, for what you get in return the price is really peanuts I think. I'm sure ED will iron out the remaining hickups in the near future. If you like combat sims, and have the pricey hardware to run them, then I really don't understand the facts that so many people make an issue out of the price for the item which actually supplies you with so much fun in the end.

  44. Don't think the hydraulic and oil pressure issues are a bug. You're frying your systems out with hot starts. It should state in your checklists that you must wait until engine ITT gauges read less than 150c before attempting start up. If you hit the ramp and shut down without letting the engines cool a bit, you're temp will shoot up to 600-800 after shutdown. It then takes 14minutes for the engines to cool to a decent temp to restart. If you land and idle for two minutes before shutdown, they only push up to around 400c and it takes less than 5min to cool them to 150c. Also, be aware that I've seen a lot of people use the APU generator on restart with ground power on. That's bad juju. The ground power is primary bus. Here's my turnaround method: *After landing and taxi, idle engines for 2-3minutes - not a bad time to rearm/refuel *Ask for ground power *Make no changes to switches or configs, as they'll stay with ground power *Shut down engines *Wait three minutes for repairs to occur *Wait additional time for engines to cool below 150c on the ITT indicator *While waiting the 5 to 6 minutes I'll -Get more scotch -Do self debrief to figure better tactics against last sortie -Plug sitNess into TAD -Find wife for quick slap and tickle *After temps are good and repairs are complete start up APU (no no touch apu gen) *Start up engines *Shut down APU *Check Stat page on LMFD *Remove ground power while watching stat page *Take off *pwn

  46. First, Hi & Salute all :) I was having problems too on my end with the multiplayer GUI with two monitors setup. The problem was that I couldn't reach some buttons in different GUI screens. Panzertard pointed me to the right direction, so props go to him. So here is a quick and dirty change for those pesky buttons to come up: - Make a backup of the files [Ka-50\FUI\Resources\Multiplayer\] options-screen.res , select-as-window-multiplayer.res and briefing.res. - Unpack the contents of the file below and overwrite. - These changes reposition the buttons "Fly Mission", "Debriefing" and "Save Changes" to the bottom left. Only one line of each file was changed, the ones like: \graphicbutton \begin \tag{44} \coord{20, 705, 70, 755} \texture{0, LightKeys.tga} \texturecoord{0, 0.5859375, 0.1953125, 0.78125} \help{Fly mission} \shifts{0.5859375, 0, 0.5859375, 0} \end The coordinates of the buttons were changed to 20-70.
