  1. I know about this effect, but it is a bit outdated and IIRC it is not even dense enough to block sight. At least it never hindered me from reengaging targets in CA. And as you said, it is AI only. That's why I am asking for more information. By the way, here is an older thread regarding this topic were they posted some vids where you can see a comparison between current DCS smoke launcher effects an RL smoke: My guess is that they might be able to employ the new dynamic cloud tech to create realistic smoke screens. Having this in CA would be really nice and can give tanks a much better chance to survive attacks from choppers. So fighting tanks would be more challenging. But thats me guessing. I hope somebody can translate what exactly has been mentioned or ED can give us some more infos here.
  2. According to this post we might finally get smoke launchers in the future. I don't speek russian, so maybe someone who does can tell if there has been said more than just "planned". Mayby some of the officials can also share some more information regarding this topic if possible. For me it would be interesting if it is just a visual effect at the beginning or if the AI and the "lock target" (a.k.a. aiming cheat) mode will also be affected. Personally I think it would be a huge game changer if the AI would also loose LOS. Especially the AT-11s from the russian tanks wouldn't be so deadly anymore on open fields.
  4. We can't. But it doesn't change anything. It drops when it drops. The frequency of the upcoming mini-updates is probably the best indicator: We will most likely see TADS part 2, Gun, Rocket and Laser Hellfire mini-updates before the cold start. During the Hind release, we had roughly 1 or 2 per week. However, the cold-start came before the weapons, but I doubt that they will give us an attack helicopter without any clue how to blow things up. Here is a link to the Hind mini updates: Just look at the dates and topics and you have a rough idea when it might drop if you consider Wags comment.
  6. Found both of those during todays sightseeing flight with the hind. Good that you already bumped this thread. Saved me some time looking for existing reports
  7. For me it depends on price and if I can integrate it in my setup. So I can't tell for sure.
  8. Not a real high-end construction, but a cheap one. I tested a counter-weight solution. Works like a charm. No sticktion and the collective remains always in position
  9. +1 for the request. A friend of mine finally got the 14 and I joined him as RIO during a sightseeing flight over Syria. We both use VR headsets and it was totally awesome to see where he was looking. The best thing was that I could tell him how to turn his head to find the switches and gauges he was looking for since it was his first flight in the tomcat .
  10. I have noticed this too. IIRC you can get your gun out of the max elevation state by disabling or enabling the stabilizers (or was it tracking mode? ). It will then start tracking the target and you can fire the gun. However, for me, it seems that the lead calculation is sometimes (not always) way off. But using tracking mode and doing the aiming manually is way more fun anyways. Whenever that occurs, I usually switch positions and disable/enable stuff randomly and it magically starts working again. But thanks for bringing that up.
  11. This whole discussion reminds me of my stepmother who keeps constantly asking me about when I will finish my PhD-thesis and tells me what she thinks I have to do to get it done. She never studied something that qualifies her to judge the quality of the work I am doing and never wrote a PhD-thesis herself. Still, she thinks to know exactly what I have to do and always starts a discussion when I tell her it will take longer than expected The point here is, that even some things that seam easy to an outsider might turn out as a total nightmare once you get into it. I don't know how ED is approaching the whole flight model but in the end it is a simplified model with some tweaking parameters that will never match the data 100% to begin with. Getting such a model as close at it can get to the real data without any major inaccuracies in some areas is an art of its own. I have already done that for way more simple cases. It isn't fun, it isn't easy and you simply can't predict when you will get it right. Sometimes it is pure luck. At least I had the benefit that I could decide that the results were good enough without anybody else complaining... So to everybody who thinks he or she knows what ED has to do: Get over the peak... Dunning-Kruger Effect (click me)
  12. Vperfkit was the other tool I meant. We will try that. Going back to previous DCS versions isn't an option but I will have a look into 3dmigoto.
  13. I have some questions: A friend of mine recently got an Occulus Quest 2 to play DCS. I myself use a Valve Index. A few days ago I found the enhancement tools by fholger (upsampling + reshade) here in the forum and it made such a huge difference (performance + visual) for me that we tried it on my friends system yesterday. However, to work properly, steamvr is requiered. But dcs turns into a jittering nightmare when he is using steamvr (even without the mentioned mods). Interestingly, the frame rate is solid. From what we found out in the internet this has nothing to do with DCS and we will try some suggested fixes later. I also know that fholger has at least an upsampling tool that also works for occulus. But that helps mostly with performance. So my questions are: 1. Did some of you experienced the same jitter problems when running DCS via SteamVR? If yes, how did you get it fixed other than not using SteamVR? 2. Are there any other DCS enhancement tools that are popular in the Occulus community so that he might get similar visual quality enhancements?
  14. Mostly that I can switch to all positions and have access to all relevant features like the commander sight, possibility to assign targets to the gunner, smoke launchers and whatever else might be possible that we are currently missing. The interior would be an absolute blast in VR, but I guess a bit pointless in the pancake version for the reasons you mentioned. However, as you said, tanks are rather simple. So the system modelling wont take much time in comparison to a plane. So it might not hurt to put some hours into it and it would still not get even close to the dev hours of an F-16 or F-18. So for some really popular vehicles like the abrams or T-72, I guess it wouldn't be unrealistic.
  15. Hope these plans involve full fidelity vehicle modules. In this case CA would be the Flaming Cliffs equivalent for ground forces. However, I don't expect to see anything related in the next 3 years since ED already has a big todo list. But it is interesting how we are getting slowly out of the skies towards the ground. With all the helos around the corner and already there, it is only a matter of time until we can get our boots dirty
  16. My bet: 22.02.2022 at 22:02:20.22 ...
  17. 7. I have a limited set of features to learn at EA start and get new ones over an extended period of time. So I don't get overwhelmed by the full complexity of a module and don't need to figure out myself what to learn first. Just learn stuff as it gets released
  18. I think he just wants that if a unit has an assigned route and you take control that the autopilot is engaged. This way, the vehicle will continue to follow the assigned route. What currently happens is that you are immediately in control and the short orientation phase is usually enough to screw up unit coordination. Additionally, IIRC, the route is also invalidated and reenabling the autopilot isn't enough. So you need to reassign the whole route. Can't say right know for sure if other members of your group also loose the route and stop following it or if only the controlled unit is affected, but I think it was the case.
  19. I would bet that there will be an option to tell the George AI to lase the target of a pilot controlable sensor
  20. Agreed. I tested nearly all playable units now and some tanks actually give you an indication if you got a valid firing solution or not (red, orange and green lights). Also, the Abrams seems to be the only tank that gives you a 5000m solution on AP rounds. Most others max out at 3500m. Some older ones have even less range. Not sure if this is correct for the most recent tanks simulated in DCS (T-90?, latest Leopard 2?). Anyways, I think some sort of indication that you have no valid firing solution is needed. Otherwise, people just wonder why their bullets drop short and conclude it is a CA bug (like I did ), while it isn't.
  21. There was a binding but it was just a toggle. So you used the same key to flip the switch up and down. This wasn't very useful if you wanted to bind the launch bar to a physical 2-way switch. Now it seems that we have a dedicated up and down key binding.
  22. Like it did the last time it got delayed. Expect it to go down again when the new EA date is known.
  23. Have to figure out how to rearrange my VR setup with the limited space I have, but consider me to be a future customer.
