Training 2 vs 2, sidewinder: tips and tricks please
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
How do you tell your wingman to attack a certain airplane. It 2 vs 10, you are 10 mile apart, closing fast... I feel I have just time to select the sidewinder, turn on forward radar. tone, cage and then shoot. Not sure about the distance I can fire in a head to head engagement. Been shot out of the air also quite a few times. I am using chaff Just saw a video from Wagner where you can see on the AMFCD who is targeting what and no clue how to do that yet -
Joystick type button on CM3 throttle
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in VIRPIL Controls
Yeah thanks, after a restart of the game it was working again... weird Can you check your buttons in DCS while playing? I see it works for the axis... -
Hello, New to the game, Been doing landings, weapons and just moved (slowly to my first Air to Air missions). And I have (a lot of stupid) questions considering 2 vs 2 fights: - In a head to head, how do you approach? - When to start locking? - How can you switch to target 2 after your rockets are on their way to target 1. - When going head to head, when can you shoot you sidewinder (which one)? - I keep loosing my enemies after we start turning, Can radar show me on the hud where it/they are? - Is there a video on how perform an encounter with 2 vs 2 with sidewinders? - Why does my wingmen never shoots? (ps. what applies to Amraam too)

Joystick type button on CM3 throttle
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in VIRPIL Controls
I configured it, it worked.... used to lock planes in the Amraam training. Today I was redoing some basic training and couldn't get it to lock anymore. Checked my settings and TDC depress was not assigned anymore. But also I could not Assign pressing ministick to TDC depress If I check in Virpil software, pressing it registers as the vertical axis blinks upon pressing. How can I assign the TDC to assigning a target agai? -
ok, mine is 70% on idle, bit high. Hmm how to change that

Hi, When doing the training for bombs I encountered the issue that when I want to set de amount - distance between bombs the UFC doesn't show anything (stays black) am I missing something?
-
Hi, I followed the instructions via Youtube of Jon's gaming and tech. And I have my throttle set up as follows for the F/A-18C: before the first detent off over the first detent idle (70% power) between 1st and 2 detent 70-99% power over the second detent Afterburner I am new to the game and my gut feeling is that 70% seems a bit high for idle. on the other hand, the full throw is only 29% and allows me to micromanage my speed very well. Do you guys have a similar power distribution? Thanks for your input.

Joystick type button on CM3 throttle
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in VIRPIL Controls
I have now also edited it to the mini joystick on the throttle... works very fluently, more than on a button on my joystick (tried that as well). For viewing around I use TrackIR, which was new to me, and I find it AMAZING!! The fact that when you turn your head in real life, you also do it in the plane. The fact that if the letters are small on the DDI and you lean forward you zoom in and get closer to the screen... wow! The fact you do gear and with a quick peek of the head, you see it go.... wow! (not even talking about looking for enemy planes around you) -

VFR airfield overhead pattern landing question
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Awesome video (added it to my youtube F/A-18C folder)... immediately inspired me to change my HOTAS. I now have a 4 way buttons with View, but since I use trackIR I am going to reconfig it for trim nose along the vertical axis and rudder horizontal. Press will be trim reset. What I have to figure out is when to use trim and when to use throttle to do this. As I see it his speed is about 135 knts and then he corrects with trim to align the E bracket. Back to training 1 and try to land without touching my stick. already looking forward to this!!- 13 replies

VFR airfield overhead pattern landing question
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Yes I am flying the second training mission, once around the airfield at about 600R height and then land. Thanks for the cage information, I will check that it is on while I do my turns , then the HUD should stay more visible. I do the TCN settings, round the airfield, am successful in landing, but for some reason DCS doesn't think so. I don't hear the guy say mission completed or something along that line like I did hear in the first straight in landing. But like the straight in, I will keep practising till it feels easy. You know what they say: Don't practise till you got it right Practise till you don't do it wrong- 13 replies

VFR airfield overhead pattern landing question
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Awesome manual, but it doesn't tell me what I did wrong. If you press 'Cage' how is that displayed on the hud that you caged and what does it do in case of a landing?- 13 replies

VFR airfield overhead pattern landing question
Double Dutch replied to Double Dutch's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Nope, def. used my flaps/gear, didn't need to use my speedbreak. Did the same as the straight in landing, only with a circle following the green brackets Could that be it?- 13 replies

hi, I am doing the VFR airfield overhead pattern landing, I set the TCN, fly in, I press Cage. I do my turns. Ok, being a newby my approach is one where I can be proud off... but I land. However I never get the end speech with well done, mission successful. I guess I am missing something. What besides setting the TCN, Press Cage and land do you have to do?

Hi, If your throttle is on idle, on how much % power are the engines running?
-
I was thinking in manoeuvrability, if you want to bleed speed fast to make f.i. a tighter turn but then still want to slow down, you press retract but with off, you can stop the speed break retracting. Scenario could be to break hard, extend to 90%, break softer press retract once and press off when it is back to f.i. 30%, then when you have your correct speed press off. One of the way I used to dodge rockets (in Jane's/DiD EF2000) was to get the missile on a 90 degree angle on my flight path, get to the optimum speed (speedbreak) to be able to turn as tight as possible and the rocket would not be able to make that angle as I would turn into its direction. (Still have to test that technique in DCS).

Speed brakes dont auto retract in break turn
Double Dutch replied to markturner1960's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I have a similar binding but I find it weird. When I press extend, it will extend as long as I hold it till the max If I press off, nothing happens if I press retract, i goes in all the way (1 click). More logical would seem: press and hold to extend Press and hold to retract off is stop the airbrake. But I guess it is not logical for the hornet. If you are dogfighting and you want to go from 90% speed break to 60% you have to click retract and then when you are at approx 60 either click off or extend very quickly. -
For EXTEND, absolutely!! I extend and whenever I let go of the switch, it stops, no matter how far I am extracted. For retracting to stop I have 2 options, when it goes down press OFF, or press EXTEND very shortly. I would find more logical that extend and retract operate the same way and when I want to stop using airbrake I press off More logical than needing 2 commands to be able to go from a 90% speedbrake to 60%. it makes maximizing the use of your your speedbreak in f.i. dogfights harder to do by introduce the extra action.

I want to configure the speedbrake as follows: - push a button and as long as I hold it, it goes up - push a button and as long as I hold it, it goes down - push a button once, and it closes. I wanted to use the following controls for that: For EXTEND/LShift + B it works like a charm (I push and it extends as long as I push the 4 way button in that direction, if I stop pushing, it stops extending). For RETRAC/LCtrl + BT it works like an OFF function (I press once and it goes all the way in. The only way to prevent it going in completely is to push EXTEND). OFF/B doesn't work at all, I press the button and the speedbrake stays out. Buttons tested via Virpil test tool & button confirmed working in DCS Controls. I would expect EXTEND and RETRACT to work similar but opposite of each other (keyboard controls seem to suggest too). But they don't, which seems like a bug. Example which should be possible (in my opinion): I want to break real fast to get into an advantage and Extend my airbreak to 90% by using RETRACT, then I slowed done almost enough and I want to be able to bring it down to f.i. 30%. When I am in the right speed, I want to push OFF (one click) and it retracts completely. Like the electric window of a car.
