Simulation development philosophy - a question for the Forum
AG-51_Razor replied to Notso's topic in Chit-Chat
"I was pondering the other day about how ED releases modules into a Beta stream for public use and then adds features/systems over time. It seems an unusual business model in the aviation simulation world but I think I understand their reasoning. I'll get to that later. I don't know how other "gaming" companies release similar products, but in the actual flight simulation world, a product would be developed for a year or more and then released pretty much feature complete. And then there would be a development cycle where any updates would be released on a 12-18 month cycle unless there was something really wrong with the functioning of the sim. I recently worked for a major global aviation simulator company and this was their and most of the industry's model." Notso, was the "major global aviation simulator company" that you worked for in the business of developing and manufacturing simulators for the aviation industry? If so, I would submit that there is absolutely no comparison between that and ED's business model for the fact that the simulator companies have complete control over all of the hardware as well as the software that the customer buys. Not only that, the simulator is usually delivered by the manufacturer and set up and then calibrated and approved by an aviation authority such as the FAA or CASA or ENAC etc. etc. When ED or any of the 3rd party developers put something out to this community, they have absolutely no control over any of their customers' hardware, much less the abilities of the customers to deal with some of the issues that routinely pop up that may or may not have anything to do with the product yet may greatly affect how well it runs, or how poorly it runs. I don't see how ED or any other "game" developer could do it any other way. They surely could wait longer for their engineers to be fairly certain that the product is stable and feature complete but that would not cure the requirement for constant updates to account for an infinite number of possible problems caused by the infinite combinations of hardware out there in all of our homes. I, for one, have no issues with the way ED is doing things, other than the normal frustrations of waiting for the next update to either cure a glitch caused by a prior update or for a much anticipated new feature for my favorite ride at the moment. :pilotfly: -
Yes, that was a great disapointment indeed. I was really looking forward to that module. Evoman has a point though. This would be a terrific marketing tool to suck would be Topgun Maverics into the game! They'd never know what hit them!! :megalol: Far beyond any and all hopes would be that the T-2 could be capable of multiplayer as is the L-39.......or at least is supposed to be.

DOH! I missed that last word.....Page!

What do you suppose that they were referring to when they said that the papers were signed and the ink was dry?

Maybe you could check your mission settings to see if simple (easy?) communications are selected. If realistic comms are checked, you'd need to make sure that A. you have the proper radio freq tuned up and B. You are using the right radio. Whenever I call ATC from a cold ramp start, I get "request engine start" and they always answer appropriately. Next I want to request taxi but the only choice is "request takeoff" and they never answer until after I have managed to get hooked up on the cat.
-
Yoda, do you have a swag as to the makeup of the Carrier Strike Group in terms of numbers and types?
-
 I missed the part about contacting ATC after trapping. I will give that a try when I get home this afternoon.
-
I don't suppose that it could be the reworked S-3B Viking tanker? Probably not, since it is already in the game, just not reworked and with improved physics for the basket refueling system. Oh well, we need a bigger dart board! :music_whistling:

I forgot to mention that this was done on the .44266 version with no mods installed. Also, no attempts were made to communicate with ATC.

Gierasimov, I tried your method: I created a new mission on the Cacus map with player Hornet set to spawn on the ramp cold. Went through normal start and taxied to Cat 3. Next I lowered the launch bar. The only thing I did differently than I have done in the past is to give the U key a double tap. The JBD made a slight movement then settled down in the stowed position. I gave it one more single tap and the JBD came up and the cat shuttle seemed to take tension. I made a perfectly normal launch. I came around and trapped and taxied back to Cat 3, lowered the launch bar, gave the U key a double tap (the JBD did not move) and then a single tap whereupon I was thrown up into the air and landed on the nose gear. So close and yet, so far away!

OOOOH Captain Orso, did you miss a day off your meds?? That's a bit harsh in my opinion. Especially coming from one such as yourself that has been traditionally fairly reserved, mature and gracious with their disdain for ignorance. :pilotfly:
-
Cat 3 is the culprit for me. That is the one that throws me up off the deck  I have tried this both in single player as well as multiplayer with very repeatable results unfortunately.
-
Well, I hope that the Forrestal's cats work better than the ones on the Stennis at the moment :music_whistling:

Yes but the differences between the FRS1 and the AV-8B in the game now, are about as much as the differences between the F-86A Saber and the F-100 Super Saber. They are both single engine jets but that is about the extent of their commonality.
-
I have not experienced anything like you have described with the SA-2 but have with the SA-6. I saw this in the latest update log: MP. Dedicated Server. AAA and SAM will not engage targets until they have passed overhead - fixed.
-
How about cat 3 & 4? Do they still fire you straight up when you hit the U key?
-
While I am just as interested in seeing some of the upcoming features of the Hornet brought to life as the next guy, I am now, more than ever, interested in knowing whether or not one can taxi over to Cat 3 or 4 and hook up and launch without getting thrown into the air! I'd like to know if just getting hooked up on Cat 1 & 2 still requires some kind of secret hand shake between the "U" key and the comms menu. I'm at work at the moment and it's killing me!! :pilotfly:

What is holding them back from creating a thread in the 3rd Party forum here?

We make fun of each other all the time, whether goofing up or not!! :megalol:

I'm pretty sure that the A-7E was a Navy carrier based a/c. The A-7D was the Air Force version.
-
First off, as you pointed out, it is ugly, which is why they lovingly refer to it as the SLUF! Secondly, you don't need to be sold on this plane at all. And last but most importantly, IT HAS A TAIL HOOK!! What more is there to know??!! :megalol:

Still unplayable for me in MP aboard the carrier and tried NTTR at Nellis as well just to see if it was a memory leak due to the carrier. Nellis was just as bad.
