Why is it so hard to believe that a ramjet missile (something so far not modelled in DCS) would have a longer range than a comparable solid booster missile? (Like the AMRAAM for example). I mean it's literally the main requirement and the reason why the ramjet technology was actually used in the METEOR missiles in the first place. Now I seriously doubt that a 200km range is anywhere close to a realistic firing solution even with a high-altitude, high-speed head-on target aspect shot, but 100km or so as an optimal firing solution against a head on, high closure target (which is about 54nm) and a no escape zone of 60km (which is about 32nm) sounds reasonable for a missile specifically developed to have a much longer range than any comparable medium range air-to-air missile in service at the moment.

DCS Mi-24P feels very twitchy
Lurker replied to Hummingbird's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
@Hummingbird I've parked the Hind for the past few weeks. (Was on holiday and got kind of frustrated with the FM) any changes in the last few patches with regards to it's handling? -
Which switches? The microswitches in the pedals are activated by moving the pedals.

All of the aircraft above were developed and served during the years of the so called "Cold War" conflict. Just because we are not getting specific variants that were active in specific conflicts, such as the above mentioned Rolling Thunder timeframe, doesn't mean that they weren't in active service until 1991. Most "cold war gone hot" scenarios are fictional anyway, so while yeah I agree you wouldn't be able to say simulate Rolling Thunder (let's forget for a moment that we don't even have a Vietnam map) there are still a multitude of theoretical fictional scenarios you could design and populate with those modules.

What is the typical engagement range of the Apache? Several km's away when using Hellfires? What about when it's being used in a close air support role against infantry? I really have no idea, I'm genuinely curious at how the Apache is used in it's close air support role, considering that it's cannon is mostly an area suppression weapon.

@Alpenwolf Please correct me if I'm wrong but TrueGrit's lead developer is (or was, not sure about that) an active duty German Airforce fighter pilot who flew on....you guessed it the Eurofighter Typhoon type But I digress, I get where you're coming form and the fact of the matter is that most players will always want to get their hands on the latest and the best. It's understandable. I don't mind it, and I think that it's even skewed in our favor since we are still getting some great "oldies" in the pipeline. In fact most of the new modules in development are indeed cold war aircraft. The Mirage F1, the Mig23, Mig29A, the Crusader F-8, the A-7 Corsiar, the A-6 Intruder, etc. In fact I was extremely surprised that we are even getting a Typhoon, or that an AH64D is in development. If anything I would argue that these "newer" aircraft are the exception and not the rule where DCS is concerned.

I can answer this specific question. The Leatherneck lead developer at the time of the Mig21BIS development was an active duty Serbian fighter pilot. The MiGs he flew were of the Mig21 BIS variant, at the time he flew on that type they were already old and mostly obsolete but still in service since they were the most common fighter type that Yugoslavia operated and that Serbia and the other nations who formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia inherited. (I'm not sure about Serbia, but for example Croatia still operates a few BIS Migs that are operational) It's not always about what they want to develop, but what they have access to.

I'm confused, isn't their "secret" next module now officially the Typhoon?
-
It's such a shame that the old modules are not getting the updates they need. It's usually very minor things caused by switching to new engines, reflections being a primary concern, so it's not like it would take thousands of man-hours to fix. Not only are the free modules not getting any love, paid modules (like the L39C for example) are all but forgotten.

Solving edge case scenarios helps everyone. The only one crying here seems to be you though, maybe keep it polite and civil if you want to have a civilized discussion.

Not sure how different this chopper would be to the P version, it's just a chin turret. Basically you are offloading the aiming and firing of the gun on a strafing run to the guy in the front seat. The helicopter still needs to jink, when coming under fire, which would make aiming the gun really difficult anyway. Unless they've changed the operating and tactical procedures of the VP, where the helicopter would hover and fire the turret from a distance. Which i really doubt. I'd take the 30mm twin cannon over the chin turret any day of the week.

This might be a stupid question but have you checked whether the gun is loaded?

Find cause for crazy high CPU frametime?
Lurker replied to Donglr's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
@Voyager well I'll be damned. Turning of HAGS has improved my experience in VR so much so that I can run ULTRA clouds and medium shadows while flying with the Hind, and have an extra smooth gaming experience. (MSAA x2 as well) I had no idea that this setting affected VR so drastically. I was left scratching my head with how it's possible that I'm getting such low performance on a Rift S and a 3090RTX, turns out it's because HAGS was ON. Thank you very much Voyager, this setting should be listed somewhere front and center. It's absolutely critical to VR performance. -

Will have to check this out, I think I may have this turned on. -
@Rudel_chw thanks for the reply, it was really an honest question, I've not seen them post in a while. No need to string me up from a tree, I don't think that by posting a question on a forum I'm preventing anyone from working on anything. Just looking for information. Oh it's a Grim Reapers video....no wonder I've not seen or heard anything...yeah, I think it's fair to say that I avoid those.

When was the last time True Grit communicated anything at all on these forums or elsewhere?

I shoot at whatever range the piper is telling me to shoot. Wag's video on Unguided Weapons is very informative on how to use the auto-ranging system.

Chain gun: Effective engagement ranges?
Lurker replied to Hummingbird's topic in Military and Aviation
Should still be accurate enough to mop up trucks and other unarmored, or lightly armored targets. Unfortunately I don't think it will be effective against infantry in DCS, as currently HE fragmentation damage is not modeled in DCS. Anything other than a direct hit will probably be completely ineffective against infantry. -
Are you trolling me? The map doesn't move, it basically stops once I'm past the edge.

Chain gun: Effective engagement ranges?
Lurker replied to Hummingbird's topic in Military and Aviation
A rate of fire of 600rounds per minute is nothing to scoff at, but it's designed to be fired in short bursts AFAIK. An effective range of 1500m is more than enough for this type of weapon. As for the recoil effect at hover, well I don't know about that, but the entire Apache design philosophy was to make it an incredibly stable weapons delivery platform, in all regimes of flight including hover so I doubt that it would be more inaccurate in a hover, but I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer that one. -
Chain gun: Effective engagement ranges?
Lurker replied to Hummingbird's topic in Military and Aviation
This is a 30mm weapon right? So that would make it pretty effective against lightly armored and soft targets. On par with the Mi24P's cannon, but it should be much more accurate if fired from a hover because of the HMD aiming system? -
That's interesting. Because that's not what happens. At least not in my case. Talking about the zoomed "out" larger scale map.
-
What do I do when I get to the edge of the map? Is there any way to "change" maps?
-
You don't need to switch the weapons off for maneuvers, you just need to order Petrovich to close the observation doors. I think it's contextual "down-short" by default.
