I remember seeing this video where the effect was audible from inside the cockpit. But I am not sure if the sound is authentic, especially since the author also superimposed the sounds over him driving his car over the runway over the now abandoned Soesterberg AB. It sounds a little to windy to me. But it could be the other F15, or the fact this was recorded sometime before 1994, the year the americans left camp new Amsterdam. The sound is also sometimes heard on some F16's :) ( heard at almost every landing after 1:05)

you can download 1.5 and fly on the caucasus map for free. You can also fly the Su-25T and an unarmed P51 for free. If you want to fly the F15 you'll have to buy it. You can get it as a standalone, bundled with the red flag campaign ( requires nevada ) or in the FC3 pack wich contains a large number of planes ( A10A, F15, Su25A, Su-27, Su-33, MiG29G,MiG29A,MiG29S )

Yes, the concept you have is sort of correct. Before launch, the aircraft programs the missiles inertial navigation system. During the first phases of flight the F15 updates the missile through a datalink system, the missile itself still "sees" nothing. So the missile will still perform course corrections in the early stages, provided you maintain the lock. If the lock is lost, the missile will maneuvre to the last updated point and go active there, so technically it's already in a fire&forget state now. I wouldn't say it just locks onto a bandit at the spot where it goes active. It's usually in a good kinematic position to get a kill on only the bandit you designated. I'd always go for the 120C. The range being the biggest boon for me. Or higher speed for a given time of flight. It can intercept 4th gen just fine usually.

How to pass campaign mission 1 fam ride?
Sryan replied to undertheradar's topic in F-15C for DCS World
tap 1 to go to nav mode. then once more to go to ilsn, then once more to go back to nav. normally this 'unstucks' waypoints for me. Lalt ` cycles waypoints. -
I personally like the plethora of info shown :) Why would you not want to see the state of your fuel tanks and amount of gun ammo on the MFD? In these modes the radar locks on to a target and then guides the seeker head to the target. You can squeeze more range in the lock this way. You need to lock a target once if you are in the normal BVR mode. You need to lock a target twice if you are in TWS ( Track While Scan ) mode in order to transition to STT ( single Target Track ). ALthough you can still launch an AIM-120 if you only got a single lock in TWS, but not an AIM-7 sparrow. You can lock multiple targets in TWS wich is where the powerful ability to launch multiple slammers at multiple targets comes from. The targets won't even be notified of the launch untill it's time for the slammers to go active. The blindzones on the F15C are straight up and straight down, in a 45 degree cone. The thing has 360 degree coverage, so you cannot approach it from the horizon with your radar on without an eagle seeing you coming at him, unless he is in a steep bank I think you've not played the AIM-120 to it's strengths yet. The real thing about that missile is that when you shoot one, two timers will appear on the bottom left of the HUD. When the shorter timer runs out, the missile is active and you can break off or go defensive. The missile will guide itself in. A SARH equiped opponent has two options, break off to defend against the missile causing his SARH to go dumb or try to keep guiding the SARH while the amraam will most likely destroy him. The other advantage the thing has is that when you launch it from TWS mode the thing does NOT provide a launch warning untill the short timer runs out and the missile is active, usually around 6 to 12 seconds before the projected impact. I understand you're a flanker pilot going on a holiday :) But the F15 still requires time and respect to be learned properly. Go back to the manual wich, in my opinion, is not that bad at all. Check the chapters about radar manipulation first ( starting from page 66 ).

Survival in the F-15 - new to electronic warfare
Sryan replied to Reflected's topic in F-15C for DCS World
I'd say either vertical scan ( will autolock up to 10nm or so away ) or BVR, then make the scan cone narrow and turn the cone into the direction you're turning in, you'll need to have a decent bead on his altitude to use this. Someone more expierenced than myself may have another idea. Use your eyes as well if you think he's within that range. And don't go anywhere blindly. If you've got no clue it may be better to extend away and then return from a longer range in BVR mode. -
The S has acces to TOW missiles. So that should provide plenty of firepower as well.

1: Somewhere in the bottom left. Flaps are also automatic in that they retract automaticly when you go over 200 knots. but you should still put them up manually, otherwise the plane will drop them in a fight should you ever go below 200 :) when aproaching just hit the flaps key and the plane will put them down when the speed is right. 2: regardless of the systeme internationale most countries in the western world use the feet, knot and nautical mile as the aviation standard. With time spent in the plane you will be able to learn to 'feel' the values. 3: <what Tharos says> 4: When you put her in a combat air-to-air mode. You'll get a digital mach readout on the bottom left of your HUD. So as an example. Tap 2 to put her in BVR mode, read out the Mach number, then 1 to go back to navigation. 5: This is a digital readout. When not tampered with it actually digitally reads out your onboard tanks. you need to press Lshift-D to move the knob below the fuel indicators to put them on WING-TANKS or CENTERLINE-TANK. All 3 external tanks drain at an equal rate though. they typically each have the same amount of fuel in them. I wonder what info you have such a hard time aquiring from the pit? Most things you'll need are shown on the HUD in one mode or another. Only engine perfomance, fuel indication and the caution light panel are placed a little out of sight in my opinion. If you feel troubled reading the gauges why not try turning on the lights? (L). Hope you had some fun flying that thing, too :D

Meanwhile the F15 in the simulation has no datalink, Helmet mounting cueing system or aim-9X Vector thrusting high-off boresight locking missile. It also cannot carry a Talon HATE pod to give it IRST capability. I'm all for new russian stuff. I want a full russian dcs module for maybe the su-24, 27 or 34. But I'm afraid if we're going to add new stuff just for the sake of it being more powerful than what the last generation had the simulation may enter a state of powercreep where only the latest stuff is worth having. And soon we'll have F15C2040's with F22's battling it out with PAK FA T50's and HAL FGFA's/AMCA's.

required reading for new flanker pilots :) http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=150315 There are mods out there with english cockpits for virtually all planes. The radar on the F15 measures in NM and the radar in the Su-27 measures in KM but neither can pick up a lot of targets at their max range. Nothing fighter sized, anyway.

Survival in the F-15 - new to electronic warfare
Sryan replied to Reflected's topic in F-15C for DCS World
Since the thread is about survival I thought I'd also share the tip to do some cranking and weaving. When you're coming up in what looks like will be a head-on engagement at BVR range. Don't put the bandit straight at your 12 o'clock in the middle of your HUD. try to "crank" by keeping him 30-45-60° on your side. If he fires a missile while you got him on your 12 the missile has an easy time getting to you as the closure rate will be extremely high. You're just flying into the shot. If you're cranking the missile then it has a harder time getting to you as the closure rate is much lower. If you're cranking and your enemy isn't then you will have an edge on him even though he should actually have the longer range advantage, if he would be carrying an R27-ER. The second tip I have is weaving. You can think of weaving as making microscopic movements without really intending on changing direction. Missiles don't just home in on your aircraft, they calculate a point in space and time where they will intercept you by using a technique called PN ( proportional navigation ). by constantly moving a little bit you are constantly shifting this point. doing a minor dive or climb of just a few hundred feet or so will cause a missile thats still a few miles out to do some fairly drastic moves as it prepares to intercept you. This will expend energy and reduce its range. The effect is most apperent when sometimes you'll see a SAM launched against you. You do a steep dive and prepare to put the radar on your 3-9 line ( the 90° technique someone else just described in order to obscure yourself from the doppler effect) but the missile just drills itself into the ground because it calculated a point to impact you below the surface. When you're flying smooth the missile with your name on it is coasting smooth as well. Yanking hard will only rarely defeat a missile. Missiles at speed happily pull around 40g in a corner, and they don't chase you through the corner, they lead you in it. Only rarely you will get lucky and dodge a shot in a yank. Hope it helps :) -
AI SAM launching too early when on "expert" level
Sryan replied to D4n's topic in Aircraft AI Bugs (Non-Combined Arms)
I think it's working as intended. If a SAM waited for you to get to get in the killbox, it may already be to late as your plane might already be in range to deploy your own weapons. Not only against the SAM but also against other valued targets the SAM was supposed to protect. -
Hope you enjoyed it! Maybe try a little combat as well sometime ;) I understand it was your first flight with assumably no time spent in the manual but I thought I'd explain a few things. navigating in the F15 is actually not that bad. when in Nav mode your waypoint number is shown in the bottom right of the hud. You will even see time to target and range there as well. In order to get where you need to go you need to put the bug on the compass tape in the center above the chevron and then put the bank steering index ( that "l" that floats through the hud) on the vector indicator. You're now flying on track to your waypoint :) Maybe not as intuative as the wanna-be map on the sukhoi but you do not need to go heads down on the eagle :) so both have an advantage. There's no need to to go heads down to watch the HSI. If you don't care about desired track then just putting the compass tape bug right is enough. As for the external tanks you see most eagles with, it's kinda designed that way. Eagles don't lose out on any weapons if they choose external tanks. You take-off and cruise around with your externals on. When you engage in combat you'll drop your tanks and unlock a lot more speed and maneuvrability. Hopefully you'll have enough juice to make it home or to a tanker after the fight. For safe ILS landings, just put the cross that appears on the velocity vector and you're on your way for a safe touch-down. 180 is the approach and touch-down speed afaik. Faster if you're heavy. In order to get full nosewheel authority you need to hold down "S".

F-16's didn't score a single kill in desert storm. And never destroyed an aicraft in combat before it in the service of the USAF either. But they did take down 2 fighters when enforcing the subsequent no-fly zone. But thas all been done with AIM120's wich we do not seem to discuss.
-
I don't know the cause, or a fix. But on a stationary or slow-moving target you could set her to manual. That would allow you to fire without a proper lock. you can lock onto infantry.

Where are the WWII planes in terms of Alpha, Beta, etc...
Sryan replied to Cavemanhead's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
you mean that challenge campaign? The 109 has it. -
FC3 also has a Su-33. The only carrier capable plane in the game right now. It will also be updated to PFM. When the reworked MiG29's come out they'll surely be more expensive than the others as there's 3 playable variants.

exactly what I said. only on steam you can only use steam purchases. A-10C is a good choice :) great module. The ka-50 is also very good in my opinion.
-
AI's like to launch at Rmax. are you waiting for RTR?
-
it's on sale this very second http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/dcs_a10c_warthog/
-
If you want to use steam you can do that and if you'd ever change your mind you can take all purchases over here to the standalone. It doesn't work the other way around though. You can only use steam purchases with the steam version. The content gets released on the standalone first and when it's more polished you'll find it on steam. As an example, you won't find the Nevada terrain and the Mirage 2000C on steam yet. You're correct that the hawk is ASM/SFM right now. the EFM update bound to be released shortly though. In the current condition it flies fine except in edge of the envelope flight and the ground handling looks almost comical. But I have it and I find it fun to fly both for some aerobatics as well as a light COIN ground attack aircraft. and welcome to dcs!

so you bought it on steam? go to your library, find dcs: world. Right click it and then choose "show CD keys".

That's not quite how most modern rockets work. It seems to me that you think the rocket penetrates as a whole and then detonate inside. A weapon like that could be described as an Armor Piercing, High explosive weapon. or APHE. Those weapons where commonly used in the era's surrounding world war II. they where fired by other tanks and field guns. Rockets however, employ a different mechanic, called HEAT. High Explosive Anti Tank works by detonating outside the tank. While doing so it propels a copper element to hypervelocity wich penetrates the armor. Both systems are deadly. but the damage caused by HEAT is not omnidirectional. it's a ray with a conical shape around it from fragments and spall. The only rockets that I know of that employ mechanics like APHE are those that are designed to penetrate HABs ( Hardened Aircraft Bunkers ). have a nice day.

Survival in the F-15 - new to electronic warfare
Sryan replied to Reflected's topic in F-15C for DCS World
HOJ is the exact reason nobody leaves ECM on forever. HOJ stands for Home On Jam. You can fire a radar guided missile, wich should normally give a warning. in HOJ mode it does not give a warning. At close ranges, ECM doesn't work. Enemy radars will perform a burn through. You should look into the radar warning receiver in the manual and online. It's one of the advantages the F15 has over russian planes in how informative it is on multiple threats and their azimuth. the short bips is when you are being scanned. the fast bips mean you are being tracked ( locked on ) and the weiu sound is a missile launch warning. That warning will only play once every so many seconds. So you are still being guided on even when you don't hear it anymore. Use the RWR display to see where the threat is coming from and react appropiatly. The bad guy that has you locked has a circle around him so you have a clue where it is coming from ( it most likely will also have a diamond around it wich is the RWR's way of telling "hey! this guy might be your biggest threat"). The strong point about infrared guided missiles is that they do not give off any warning. The two ways to defeat an IR missile is by actively seeing it coming or having the situational awareness that you may be in the weapons envelope zone of an enemy and drop flares preemptively. Russians have the medium range R27-ET that can lock on from an impressive distance if you are going full afterburner. They also have the R73 wich is capable of off-boresight locking and thrust vectoring making almost the whole front hemisphere of the enemy plane a danger zone. Getting good SA requires practice ( and maybe an awacs :) ). I recomend you grab a tool like Tacview to analyze your flights. It's great for understanding the flow of battle and how and why you got shot down. have a nice day!
