  1. to get to the latest version, you should uninstall that version. You should go here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/ then login on the top-right, or make an account. Then bind your A-10C serial key to your account. You should then go here and download the latest version: 1.5 Stable: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/stable/ Beta ( continues updates, but possibly bugs or broken things ): http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/ Alpha ( only for Nevada terrain owners. purchases prior to a certain date in 2011 entitle a free nevada key. check this post ) http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/alpha/ Once the download of the version of your choice is complete. start up the game. On the top you will find a function called module manager. Go there, log-in with the details you used to log-in on the site. You should now be able to download the A-10C for DCS world. I think you may have been out of the DCS flightsim loop for a while :) The old standalone DCS: A-10C, DCS: Ka-50 modules etc are no longer supported. All modules now work on a single client, called DCS:world.
  2. MiG-21 has full campaign "stillness in time" by devs and there's a great dynamic campaign made by mbot as well. Ka-50 or Mi-8.. all about the preference. Ka-50 being an attack-helicopter with electronics and avionics you need to operate like an autopilot and targeting system, while the hip is more about throttle and stick flying. Since you seem to care a lot about campaigns, The hip has a campaign. The Ka-50 comes with 6 campaigns right out of the box, although 3 of them are chapters part of the same campaign. And there's that buyable "republic" campaign. The Ka-50 is great for cooperative multiplayer with other sharks partially because there is a datalink system. Allowing you to share info on targets and threats.
  3. It was as where others like the F-80 Shooting star and F-94 Starfire. But I am not so sure these straight-winged craft could trully compete with the MiG-15. I know the Thunderjet suffered terrible losses for only a few kills before it got turned into a ground pounder. The F84F Thunderstreak came out after the war but still fits the timeframe.
  4. F2 Banshee F9F Panther F9 cougar F86D/K dog sabre Supermarine Swift Saab 29 Not all of them are historical opponents. But in some hypothetical WWIII scenario they could've met in battle as all of these where fielded atleast a few years before the MiG-17 first saw combat in the second taiwanese strait crisis ( where the 15 also fought ). Unfortunatly none of them are in DCS. The sabre, mustang and B-52 ( if you imagine it's an earlier model) are your only historical targets. Let's hope we'll see some of these in DCS some day. Really hope we'll have the Hawker Hunter and one of the carrier based jets. No real preference there but the F9F saw combat against MiG's in korea.
  5. If you die you'll lose all your markings. and you won't get them untill you land back at base.
  6. The maple flags qualifaction campaigns also come with practice missions. So you get a chance to practice the tasks you need to do to become qualified.
  7. Try hitting RCTRL + ENTER. this will bring up a small window showing you your joystick inputs. That could rule out any issues on that side. The Su-27 is kinda notorious for needing constant adjustments and trim updates. I personaly put it in an autopilot mode if I am on the altitude I want to be at.
  8. The maple flag guys have been around for a few years now I think. I think they where almost from the very start of world. They seem reliable, kept everything working through all the updates, even the turbulent 1.5 times. They're also not completely random people. As far as I understand they have a license to produce derivative work. So ED trusts them to some point. You can't just create missions and ask money for it. The software is ED's IP after all. I heard they where planning to have their stuff in the official store. I'm not sure if the basic will teach you everything you need to know. I know they have an advanced and tactical training campaign as well. I personaly haven't used their stuff though. Part of the fun for me in a study-sim like this is figuring out how the stuff works.
  9. Yes there is. Atleast through mods. MiG-21 is a lot of fun. Interesting and challenging to fly and manage. Interesting systems but nothing to complex. After a long hard day nothing is as relaxing as destroying bombers and tanks with radar beam riding anti-ship missiles. And if that's not enough you can always hit ground units with a tactical nuke. Some people can lob those nukes impressive distances with accuracy.
  10. What are the azimuth limitations of the vivane sight? And what are the corresponding fire-limitations? I guess that the missile needs to be launched into the line of sight of the viviane system? question came to my mind after seeing the following: thanks!
  11. my bad. got confused and thought fox 1 was IR.
  12. Nothing, except that the laser of one can set off the Laser Warning Receiver on the other. There was a mod around though, that did what you want.
  13. I'm finding 3500 metres on online sources. I personaly prefer to stay above 4000m / 13000 feet to avoid MANPADS.
  14. being high and fast.
  15. AV8B can work of carriers and amphibious assault ships.
  16. Hoping that maybe the 1944 stuff that's coming brings a couple of ground units. Something like the M13 or M16 MGMC. that could fit the light AA role.
  17. STT and FLOOD mode can guide SARH Missiles ;)
  18. FOX 1 is only detectable by a MAWS. A Missile Aproach Warning System. It detects the actual launch by seeing it. The A-10C is the only player controlled aircraft equiped with such a system right now. Enemies get a Lock warning as soon as you put the radar in STT ( Single Target Track, e.g. Lock on ). They get a launch warning as soon as the missiles reaches pitbull. Note that AI kinda cheats. they can see launches from a great amount of aspects, although they appear blind to launches from behind or long range.
  19. To clarify. there is no sepperate aim-9 mode from air-to-air gunnery mode. If you hold down the master mode control button you'll go to air-to-air mode wich controls both the sidewinder and the gun. if your gun safety is off the HUD looks like this. The OP's question is how the target profile influences the Sidewinder, wich it does not at all. Since the OP stated his logic dictated it was otherwise just for show. I thought I'd briefly mention how the target profile influences the funnel, and how the funnel works. have a nice day!
  20. selecting a plane sets the 'snake' for air-to-air gun mode. 2 lines will be drawn on the HUD when you go gun mode, if the target aircraft matches the one you entered, and the wing tips of the target 'touch' the lines of the snake, squeezing the trigger will result in gun hits.
  21. it's radar guided yes, specifically an active radar missile type. That means it has its own radar built into the missile that it uses to find you and hit you. It does not listen to the radar built into your nose at all. Another typical radar guided missile type is the semi-active radar guided missile. These look for radar reflections on the target caused by the parent aircraft radar. This is how the radar guided missiles on your Sukhoi 27 work ( R27R and R27ER). Lastly there are missiles that listen to radar signals sent by the enemy. They work the way you describe, if your radar is off they cannot see you. They are called anti-radiation missiles. they are not used against aircraft though, only against ground based anti-air missile sites.
  22. it's confirmed in the works for the F/A-18 hornet. After that it may be implemented on other modules as well. planes that realistically don't have it naturally won't get it ofcourse. I don't have articles but I do have a WIP screenshot of the system.
  23. it's a 2005 update. The thing is that this is not a russian update but a slovakian one. The update intended to make the avionics comply with NATO systems. It still has all the old weapons. most changes are "under the hood" things like IFF and a digital processor, although there is a new MFD, too. If we where to get a new 29 variant I'd like to see a BM or SM. Strike fighter/multi-role with precision weapons to give some competition to upcoming multi-roles like the hornet :)
  24. you take-off and land into the wind. If you understand IAS and TAS it would make sense that flying into the wind gives "bonus" indicated speed. The faster the air blows over the wings the more lift they provide allowing you to fly! wind coming from behind doesn't help at all. you'd think it would push you but it lowers your IAS and only makes you run out of runway faster :D So Kerlix is right that when ATC says wind 069 the wind is coming from 069 and ATC always sends you up against the wind. Anyway I think the last waypoint is just to guide you home, not line you up for the landing per sé. I typically go to NAV and then DIVERT mode on the CDU. that will put a waypoint straight on the runway and will put relevant info like ILS,TACAN and radio frequencies on the MFD.
  25. you'll unlock your current target.
