It could be a LOS issue, but we would need a screenshot or track file to judge. Tonight I had him lock a target that was just the other side of a mountain peak - I don't know why he even locked the target, but he wouldn't fire the missile because he couldn't see him - despite saying "engaging". Did you have the VID page up so you could see whether he actually had LOS? George is definitely finicky, but he does usually have some reason for not firing.

Updater not enough space to unpack workaround
LooseSeal replied to FalcoGer's topic in Installation Problems
I'll have to try this next time. I ended up uninstalling the Marianas and half a dozen modules when the AH-64 came out because I couldn't update (despite having something like 80gb free!). So frustrating. -
It's been a year and a quarter since we'd last heard anything? You get the impression there's a blocker or just something not going to plan with it. I'm not convinced the "Dynamic Mission" thing seen in Wags videos has anything to do with the dynamic campaign. Why would it be buried in the ME? Wouldn't it have its own section on the main menu? "Dynamic Mission" sounds more like a one time thing, not a continuous campaign. Hopefully I'm wrong, but 16 months is a fairly long time to wait for an update.

Honestly, this is a fairly frequent question. Answer here:

I'd love ED to do the UH-60, and different variants thereof (MH-60L, please!). It's the one utility helo I want, with the Chinook a close second. ED have said there's another helicopter "in the pipeline", and maybe with dynamic campaign coming a focus on modules with a logistics capability could make sense for them?

Hmm... I'm not convinced that an extension is 'needed' for helos. I personally can't use a centre-mounted stick due to stupid arthritis in my right hand limiting my grip... so I'm restricted to table-mounting. I think it's perfectly fine and capable of hovering with a normal setup. Actually, I finally got my Virpil Constellation yesterday and first thought 'oh man, this is going to be a nightmare to re-learn how to fly this'. Immediately hopped in and did a perfect hover check first time. The extra finesse on the Virpil over my previous Warthog really made a difference. As for curves, I find them completely necessary - I think 20 for me. But to the OP I would just say... try out some values and see what works for you. Everyone is different. Try a value, check if it's making it easier. Adjust it, then try again.

FLIR is bad, just me, realistic, or will be improved?
LooseSeal replied to truebrit's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Something that hasn't really been mentioned is that the OP seems to be referring to the FLIR image as seen through the IHADSS projection, rather than the centre screen - surely that is the reason for the low pixel count, not an issue with FLIR? Personally I always use the screen if CPG. It makes sense that it would have better detail than the IHADSS... I can't see 20 to 25 year old monocles having the technology for much better displays than that! -
Virpil Rotary Encoders on AH-64
LooseSeal replied to vilson.farias's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
I finally just got my CM3 throttle, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this... I am completely clueless when it comes to stuff like setting up stick configurations. I usually just go for whatever it is out-of-the-box. Is there just a basic step-by-step guide for idiots like me that explains how to create a virtual axis that can be used for the zoom function in DCS? Particularly I'd like to use the encoder dial on the right side of the throttle for it. Unfortunately, in this thread the guy had already apparently set up his 'virtual axis' - I don't even know how to get to that point! I've watched the relevant Havoc Company Youtube videos but can't find a clear explanation there - as useful as those videos are! Again - I am fully a hardware idiot. -
And in extra large font, just to make sure. And include switching on the Radar Altimeter on there too.
-
You haven't really explained what the problem is. Is the communications menu not appearing? Is it appearing, but nobody is responding? If you aren't going to attach a track file, you should tell us exactly what you are doing and what the problem is. Saying "it isn't working" isn't enough information.
-
'False' means incorrect - there is no personal emotion attached to the word, nor any slander. Was the information 'false'? According to the statement by Prowler, yes - it was. Again, there is no emotion nor personal attack contained in the English word 'false'. You may need to use a different dictionary.
-
Did you do separate bindings for the CPG controls? I can't remember right now and I haven't done CPG for a while, but fairly sure you need to bind comms keys for both pilot and CPG.
-
Seems the Roadmap update about the Linked In thing was false - honestly, I'm glad. Razbam have enough to finish off, and no previous rotary experience. I'd rather ED did the UH-60 themselves, or made the mod a professional module.
-
What is the relationship regarding the developer of the UH-60 mod joining Polychop? Working together or unrelated? Haven't Razbam already got a lot on their plate to be taking on a first helicopter? I thought this would be ED's next helicopter that is "in the pipeline" - hopefully that's the CH-47 then.

Have you turned on the Radar Altimeter in the FLT -> SET page? Many other questions about this, and that is usually the answer.

DCS World Map Suggestion -- Island Chain Map
LooseSeal replied to Mike Force Team's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Oh no, you misunderstand. I'm not against new maps at all. I'm just more in favour of ED's artists being used for the moment to improve other crucial areas of the sim - such as creating new user-placeable assets. Currently, the range of buildings we have available in the mission editor is... not good. It doesn't create a good image for new users when they see things that look like they were designed in the late 90s. If, however, there is a separate team of artists for maps, and another for assets - then my opinion is null and void. Having the best of both worlds would be great. -
DCS World Map Suggestion -- Island Chain Map
LooseSeal replied to Mike Force Team's topic in DCS Core Wish List
As far as map diversity goes, I think I'm personally most missing a Western-style map. I do think a Baltic map would be the best thing ED could possibly do right now. It satisfies those looking a naval experience; it satisfies those looking a modern urban, Western environment; and from a financial point of view I think it would be a big seller and an attraction to DCS - without getting political at all - due to the current political instability in the region. Aghh... see? Here I am getting sucked into thinking about a shiny, new map to play around with Must. Resist. Maps - Need. New. Buildings. -
I absolutely don't mean to sound ungrateful, impatient, needy or anything like that - but I'm wondering will it be long before we get an update on some of the core work being done on the sim? I don't mean Vulkan/multicore, as that topic has been beaten to death. Something like new assets; ATC; AI work; dynamic campaign, etc and so on. We're already in April and I feel like most, if not all, the newsletters have been about minor things or specific modules. Again - don't want to sound impatient. I'm just excited to see what ED have been working on behind the scenes!

DCS World Map Suggestion -- Island Chain Map
LooseSeal replied to Mike Force Team's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Not even that map-based assets. I'd much rather their 3D artists were put to work creating more and better assets for us to place in the ME. We need so many more buildings, etc. All of this core stuff should come before any new 'shiny' maps - that's my opinion anyway. -
DCS World Map Suggestion -- Island Chain Map
LooseSeal replied to Mike Force Team's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Unpopular opinion to follow: I'm not really sure why we need more maps at this stage, if I'm honest. In terms of single-player stuff we barely have much content as it is for Syria/Marianas. We also know absolutely nothing as yet about Afghanistan, which I assume is still coming later this year. -
You're not doing anything wrong at all. It's a reported bug they're aware of. I think it only affects hot starts, I believe. So when you press it and it doesn't change visually - it actually is changing. However, if you're doing a hot start then you shouldn't need to press anything because it should be on anyway.
-
I can't watch the track right now - but are you using the 'communications menu' keybinding or one of the two dedicated radio pushbuttons? The communications menu, AFAIK, is only available when on the ground and talking to ground crew.
-
I think the OP's gripe was more about having a 'tailored' ATC specifically for FARP's - ie: no need for taxiing, etc. Given how long the standard ATC is taking to implement, I can't see a specialised FARP ATC coming any time soon. And I guess it would be a completely different system? I have no idea how it works in reality, but as someone stated above, it's not like there's a control tower or anything. So you'd be communicating with... aircrew directly maybe? No idea. At this point I'll just be absolutely delighted when ED tells us something... anything... about the revamped general ATC.
-
I agree with the above statement about ground units. I'm watching stuff like Growling Sidewinder's videos flying against human-operated ground units, and it seems a completely different experience. Sadly... I don't know anyone who does that stuff, so I'm stuck with what is rapidly becoming a very repetitive routine. The lack of a decent ground AI is much more noticeable with the Apache than with fixed-wing. When you're doing air-to-air stuff, there is at least the hint of dynamism - but on the ground... the units just sit there and let you pick them off. No defence, no tactics, no ideas. Please god let ED be actively working on this with the utmost priority. For the questions: 2. I think it feels like the most finished any ED Early Access product has been, personally. 3. I use a Warthog setup (Virpil setup arriving tomorrow! Woo!) and have had no problems at all. Although I do also use an Xbox controller for the TEDAC controls.

Can't the gun compensate the movement of the helicopter?
LooseSeal replied to dextor's topic in DCS: AH-64D
(Assuming here that you're sitting in the CPG seat) You're measuring the range with the laser. It doesn't really have much to do with 'aiming' the gun - that part is up to you. The short answer to the title of your post is: no. You need to compensate for the lead, same as you would using guns in a fixed-wing dogfight. Fire off a couple of rounds to see where the placement is, then adjust. I think with some practice it's fairly accurate for an area suppression system.
