The ideal system for me, would be one in which George had a 'detection probability' kind of thing. So, he's not guaranteed to detect and call out threats as soon as they're within a certain range. The probability of him seeing them would be affected both by chance and by various other factors: range, weather, lighting, terrain, size of the enemy unit, skill level of the enemy unit perhaps, etc etc. A true artificial 'intelligence' like that would be a fantastic addition.

I think... essentially the same thing as a fixed-wing. Somehow I can't imagine a majority of us sticking to the 'rules' but it's good to know, I guess. Casmo has a lengthy explanation of helicopter airfield operations here:
-
EGI is a fancy way of saying GPS-based navigation. So, you don't need to enter coordinates yourself, the GPS will know where you are. Which is handy on a ship, because by the time you've put the coordinates in... you'll have moved! TACAN - Tactical Air Navigation. A radio system used by (most?) Western militaries that broadcasts on ultra-high frequencies. Think VOR in a Cessna, but for the military.
-
I mean, we'll be getting the manual in (hopefully) two or three weeks. Can't imagine it's a particularly difficult system to operate. I find the Hornet's considerably more irritating to use.
-
Hmm.. what do you mean by that? The collective and the throttle are two different things. Not sure why you'd ever want to operate them at the same time. Not that you ever really need to 'operate' the throttle much at all.
-
I think his point was that the part of the Hornet's wing which folds doesn't contain tanks - and I believe that is correct, just looking at some of those 'blueprint' diagrams, the wing tanks are located in the main wing area. So, the OP is wondering why the wingtip catches fire. I think it's been answered though - it's a very old visual damage model that will be updated.

They have an essentially god's eye view and will basically always see you if there is line of sight (including through clouds/fog at the moment of writing). I'm not aware of external lights making any difference whatsoever (which is something else which needs fixing). For SAMs, you need to set their engagement range manually in the ME, otherwise they will always engage at maximum range - which is an insane thing for an air defence operator to be doing in reality. I usually set it to about 70% or so. Ideally, ED should implement a SAM intelligence that can dynamically work out on its own when to switch on radar/engage the target. I find it quite dull/predictable that we need to set it ourselves.

No offence, but... you were going to buy the module, spend all that time to learn it and then... just play the campaign and then stop? Or play it all over again? And again? Sorry, but going through all of that just to play one campaign seems unusual to me. This has been the way with every single DCS module release. However, judging by what some 3rd Party creators are saying, the Apache may end up having more campaigns than any of them. Don't forget, some in the community will have their own campaigns and missions posted to the User Files section reasonably quickly anyway. You could also use existing mods like DCS Liberation, if you like. There are, and will be, other options out there.

I hadn't thought about that! And if we get to pretty much an inverse state... it should flip the other way entirely. I believe this is how gravity works, based on some home experiments. I wonder if there are any other little surprises in the cockpit... A ham sandwich, perhaps?
-
I'm sure this will be a very complicated module. But I shall proceed to learn it the same way I (pretty successfully) learned the A-10C - Get in. Start it up. Press random buttons and do random stuff until I figure out what does what. Manual, be damned!
-
If you can provide me with a quote from an ED employee saying that a dynamic campaign was in development more than 3 (maybe 4) years ago - I shall personally send you a cookie. It has NOT been in development for 10 years - you're pulling that number out of thin air.

When will we see a major update to the games Core mechanics?
LooseSeal replied to ak22's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I have to say I feel quite similar. I feel like the mod's response to the OP was rather harsh - he wasn't asking about 'roadside fobs and farps' or propeller physics, he was asking about the core game. For me, that is the AI primarily, among other things. ED can tell us it is being 'constantly' improved, but from my perspective, it behaves the same as it did a few years ago and makes the same insane decisions. Only recently I had an entire flight of F-15E's fly in circles and one by one crash into a mountain. I've stated this before... if anyone has played DCS Liberation, then they know just how much the AI can let you down. So, if ED develops a dynamic campaign and releases it without a total overhaul of the AI... it's going to be a complete disaster. Sadly, I watched Jabber's recent Youtube video and found myself agreeing with much of it. I still support ED, and won't stop playing any time soon. But mostly that's because of lack of an alternative. I thoroughly believe DCS needs a brand new codebase if it's to survive in the future, and to stop the endless cycle of bugs and allow faster/more efficient improvements to the sim.- 124 replies

I'd just like to tack onto this - Amazing video in general. Well done Wags and all of ED. It was hugely impressive seeing it in more of its glory. The cockpit is a thing of beauty. Can't wait for Hellfires next week!

Oh man... it's definitely been asked before (Bit of a hullaballoo in that regard...) So, if you paid for the Apache in part with money and in part with Miles, then you can't earn Miles, and therefore don't get the 'delay' miles. I'm afraid it's T&C's that's always been a part of the Miles system I believe, but many only noticed because of the Apache situation.

AH-1Z Viper: Most Advanced Attack Helicopter in the World
LooseSeal replied to Intruder_360's topic in Military and Aviation
Really amazing aircraft. I'm building a scale model of it at the moment. Doubt we'd see it in DCS for a long time, if ever, but man... it would be cool. -
DCS: Eurofighter Mini-Update - The New Office
LooseSeal replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: Eurofighter
A date between a Typhoon and a Su-27? Sounds romantic. Who pays for dinner, I wonder. -
Oh man, exactly @unknown The hallmark of humanity these days, to see what we want to see and little else. I think I am now more looking forward to the release so that this incessant whining about alleged 'delays' and 'lies' can finally stop, than actually getting my virtual hands on the module. Well not quite, but it's close.

A question about a possible Korean War asset pack
LooseSeal replied to upyr1's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I get that, but what I'm saying is... that particular theatre doesn't appear to be in ED's plans. So... what you're essentially asking for is a Cold War Assets pack. Which is totally fine. More assets, the better. Especially with the Phantom coming along. -
Good lord, no. I can't think of how that would work at all. Assuming that they did release one update a month - that's 120€ a year. If I were to buy 3 modules/maps a year (which is likely), ED would actually LOSE money. And of course, you'd get into all the legal stuff of what constitutes a 'full' update - or are we being charged for minor updates and hotfixes? Should we be charged for updates to the OB or Stable branch? So very many unanswerable questions that would, undoubtedly, set these forums on fire. Sorry... it's not even worth thinking about. I do think there is a substantial amount of us who would be willing to contribute something to ED on a voluntary basis for more work to be done on the core game. For example, I'd happily contribute to a fund that goes towards creating a new codebase for the sim. But not like this.

A question about a possible Korean War asset pack
LooseSeal replied to upyr1's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Hmm... wouldn't it make sense to get a Korea map first? By the sounds of it, that won't be any time soon. (Call me sceptical, but I don't see a 'world map' for a good few years yet) -
Where is the DCS list of "Acronyms" for the Apache?
LooseSeal replied to Fakum's topic in DCS: AH-64D
I'm fairly sure it was just a joke. You know, because the videos so far have contained so many... -
Short answer: No, there is no definite date. We have been told (in another thread) they are aiming for the end of February - but don't be shocked if it gets pushed back a few more weeks after that. It is highly unlikely we will get a concrete date until very shortly before release. Consider it a pleasant surprise.
-
I wonder what the chances are of another Saturday video today... If they're still on track for end of February then I guess the next one shouldn't be too far away. Can't wait to hear "Hey everyone, Wags here from Eagle Dynamics. Welcome to this video tutorial on the AH-64D's M230 30mm chain gun..."
-
I'm not personally interested in the Kiowa, but as it doesn't seem to have been mentioned on the forum yet, I'll put it here for anyone who's interested. Casmo appears to demonstrate/tease the Kiowa at a couple of points in this video. The project certainly seems very much alive - which is great news for variety of modules in DCS.

It may be! Do you reckon the white are flares and the metallic are chaff? I guess I was unsure because I've seen flare buckets on fixed-wings which are marked a red colour. Yet not on the AH-1s, oddly enough. Thanks!
